    For me, Reagan's most significant (but not positive) legacy is the disturbing precedent he set as President. Prior to his administrations there had been Presidents who were criticised for their use of power or the people they appointed. Certainly there had been scandals and corruption within governments (ie. Watergate). The difference with Reagan was that he got away pretty much untouched by his scandals. The Iran Contra affair was a watershed moment in the sense that the President could go on TV effectively 'taking responsibility' for something he claimed not to know fully about (but very likely did) and yet suffer no real consequences himself. It's the sort of bizarre doublespeak that defined the Presidencies of Bill Clinton, George W Bush, and Donald Trump (and arguably even Obama and Biden, although probably to a lesser extent). That's not to mention the number of officials he appointed who were found to be corrupt in some form and involved in other scandals (ie. Rita Lavelle, James Watt, Deborah Gore Dean).
    Ironically, Reagan increased the significance of Government in politics. Important President though, but not for the reasons some conservatives like to believe.

      Above all, Reagan has especially been lucky to not be elected President earlier... in 1968 for example. In the 1960's he had a warmongering political speech but I seriously wonder how Reagan would have dealt with the quagmire of the Vietnam War. And I think his reputation wouldn't have come out positive.

      Greatest why? Because he ignored the AIDS crisis?

    Yeah my brother was stationed over there when all that mess broke out at our US embassy in Tehran. His family wasn't allowed to know where he was for security reasons. We guessed about where he was because of watching the evening news nightly. They sent my brother to every s--t hole possible. We almost didn't get him back the last time he came back from yet again another over the pond uproar of civil unrest. Bunch of b.s. U.S. should keep it's nose outta their business that's what my ex military father said. We all had to just sit there not knowing if he was going to be alive or dead. My brother was in one of those mobile units where they jerk you up in the middle of the night put you on aircraft to God knows where without telling them the destination. 1982 I graduated high school minimum wage was $3.35 hourly n you couldn't find a job.

      That’s a false equivalence argument. It is totally a grasping and not making any deep intellectual point.
      It’s a distracting technique…it shows that you don’t have political prowess, nor debate skills of any level that can be taken seriously.
      Joe Biden has nothing to do with Ronald Reagan…what he was or wasn’t.
      Please explain your reasoning.
      Neither president was/is great!

    Am I to understand by this presentation that the producers are in favor of growing Government , when it is known that the larger the Government money share of the money the Fed calls to be produced, the less there is available for private investment and domestic development.

  • @jamesalias595
    @jamesalias595 11 місяців тому +5

    Government deficits don't always crowd out economic growth because we have the FED and not a free economic market. Homelessness under Reagan wasn't bad, it is much worse today. Not that Reaganomics is the proper economics, but we are way worse today be it a Democrat or Republican in office, our too big to fail bailouts and massive deficit spending makes Reagan budget deficits look like a state or city budge today. Reagan helped reboot America, we couldn't have had the Bill Clinton good times without Reagan charting the way to move from 70's stagflation. Reagan wasn't perfect, he was just a man, but he was the right man at the right time to take a beaten down America and make it the shining light on the hill, well not necessarily the shining light on the hill but we got our respect back after Vietnam. We went from The Deer Hunter to Chuck Norris kicking butt in Missing in Action.

    • @johnnotrealname8168
      @johnnotrealname8168 9 місяців тому

      He reduced government spending, relative to Gross Domestic Product, and if it were not for the Democrats preventing spending cuts the budget would have been balanced. However he should have swallowed tax increases for budget cuts after it was clear nothing else was possible. His Presidency transformed the way economics was thought of.

    How could you producers of this presentation seemed to have missed or omitted the reason conservative christians voted for Reagan. As for Republican voters we had the choice of Reagan or H w Bush at one point and we now know what Bush choices have cost us.

      Can you explain more? I’m not a conservative, nor Christian (horrible experiences growing up and sexual assault by someone at church)… anyways, my dad was conservative and Christian and very much loved Ronald Reagan. He’s dead and I wish I could ask him now. Even though I likely won’t fully understand, I would love to hear your views and will be respectful.
