This is an album you listen to in the dark and a good stereo system (or headphones). Joni is simply amazing!! And you're right....this IS one of the best songs ever created.

Yeah, that’s one knockout beautiful golden tune. She had dozens of then. She’s straight stunning. Hendrix, Zeppelin and Prince were enormous Joni fans. It’s obvious to see why.

This album was recorded in 1967 when Mitchell was 24, although some of the songs had been written a bit before that.

One of the greatest songwriters of all time. I love her Hejira album and the jazz turn she took with Jaco Pastorius and Pat Metheny. “ Coyote” is fantastic, and of course “ Help Me” from an earlier album.

One of my favorite songs from her amazing debut album 'Songs to a Seagull'! Basically, she names every sort of man she has or could possibly love, but she wants her independence and freedom, in the end. This is a theme that pops up through her songs over her decades-long career. If you haven't already, I would recommend 'Woman of Heart and Mind' and 'That Song About the Midway' from that same album. Thanks!

What a gem, a spectacular song and Joni has such a lovely voice that sounds like a mermaid's. Your emotion is clear and with every reason.

Joni Mitchell is one of my favorite female singer of all time. Not only because of her skills in composing, singing, in making art itself, but also by her always humble personality. I suggest you to listen to her song "Coyote". ^-^

I know this is a 2 year old video and you might never see this comment, but I wanted to say something anyway, even if only for your other viewers to read! I totally 'get' you in this video. I 'get' what you were expressing, even down to when you said you sometimes can't listen to Joni's songs because they can
"hit you like a brick". It is the same for so many of us who adore Joni. It's like we have to spend the rest of the day recovering from the intense beauty that comes through her music. I have come to realize that Joni is a modern day Goddess. There is no other explanation. I am serious. Her music speaks to us who are open to her on very deep levels, as though she is recalibrating something in us and actually healing us on an energetic level. Maybe this is why the music can hurt sometimes, in a good way; it opens us up in a way that is not altogether comfortable.
I had not listened to Joni's music for years, being more into other artists, after being a life long fan of Joni's music, then recently I just started again, and now I am daily singing to her songs, and many of them do need "recovery time", haha. This one stood out for me when I discovered it a couple of months ago - after never knowing it for years. Perhaps because it was never a big hit seller. I cannot listen to this song and sing along without at least one tear, sometimes many, coming to my eyes. These are not sad tears, they are more bittersweet, and full of recognition. She says so much in one line, or with one line of phrasing, and her story, her poetry is so beautiful. Thank you for this honest sharing of your response to this amazing and gorgeous song. I wish you had many more views on this video!

Such a stunning album, and as you implied, SO mature for her age, and for a first album! Aren't these remastered songs wonderful? :D Fixed the low volume and whatever other issues of the original pressing. Yes, she painted the front and back covers of that and many other albums! :D I'm so delighted that you are as appreciative of this song as I am! :D For those that may not have noticed, Cactus, and "The Cactus Tree" are referenced in at least 2 other songs she recorded.. as part of the scenery she describes looking out the train window in "Just Like This Train" from the album Court and Spark, and lyrics describing a location she visited as "The Cactus Tree Motel" within the song Amelia, from the album Hejira. What an amazing story-teller with her lyrics, to say nothing of the MUSIC! :D A true pioneer! :D

Her poetry is fantastic, her melodies so creative.
Your voice adds a great dimension to her singing. You should find a good contralto voice to collaborate doing covers of her catalogue.

She always thought of herself as an artist first, and a singer/songwriter second. As she writes in "The Priest", "I am a lonely painter, I live in a box of paints."

This album is her very best, in my opinion. Every song on it is a perfect 10. So many people say Blue is her best album, but I strongly disagree. Blue never grabbed me like this album did.... not even close.

This is a lovely song. She’s definitely a poet! Beautiful lyrics and that great voice. Looking at the album cover, I wonder if it was done by the same artist who did the Beatles “Revolver” cover art? Does anyone know? Anyway, your reaction is great, Frank. How about doing another Linda Ronstadt song one of these days? 🥰🌺✌️

Loon-A-Sea is right. Joni always considered herself a painter who also does music. The similar line drawing and collage on Revolver was done by Klaus Voormann, longtime friend of John Lennon. He also played bass for John's early solo records. Similar era... sixties stuff.
