  • Underexposed is a self-filmed and produced series by Pivot Cycles athlete Brice Shirbach dedicated to showcasing trail advocacy and stewardship while exploring a variety of trails in places that may be unfamiliar to many. Join Brice as he explores the personal motivations behind the effort that goes into mountain bike advocacy while sampling the trails they work so hard for.
"I feel like I've made it pretty clear over the years just how much I love spending my time in the great state of Vermont, which might explain my infatuation with Charlemont, Massachusetts. The very same mountains that cover most of the Green Mountain State also cover all of western Massachusetts, they're just called the Berkshires once they cross state lines. You can call them whatever you want, I just know that the same magical terrain that lends itself to world-class trails up in Vermont is also abundant down in the Berkshires, as is the community's willingness to embrace it."
    - Brice Shirbach

There is a sad side story. Just west of Charlemont is Savoy State Forest. There used to be 35 miles of multi-use trails in Savoy. For ten years these trails were maintained by the Berkshire Trails Council under contract w the MA Dept of Conservation & Recreation. The BTC was made up of several off-road motorcycle & ATV clubs. Local snowmobilers also provided trail maintenance. Around 2005, several IMBA/NEMBA mtbers lobbied the DCR to close Savoy to off road vehicles. The DCR complied, without a plan to replace this volunteer trail maintenance. These trails no longer exist for any trail users.

Hikers and mountain bikers have gotten hundreds of miles of dirtbike and atv trails all across Massachusetts shut down over the last 25 years. It truly is sad to see. I ride mountain bikes and dirtbikes and can’t even begin to understand how it all happened or who would advocate for it and why.

Had a wedding in Vermont was able to get a day of riding in at Thunder Mountain in the poring New England rain had a blast! IMO rent everything this way you can strip to your skivies and not have to deal with the cleanup! I rented the V10 29’er first time riding it was sick but they had mullets, 27-5’s all different brands so much fun will be back hopefully on a dry weekend to send it! Beautiful area in the fall.

An hour and a half from my house. Saturdays and Sundays are a little busy at Thunder, but I'm retired...I like Mondays or Fridays.
