The young Copland wrote a ballet score Grogh followed by his Symphony for Organ and Orchestra. A few years later he drew on the Grogh score to make this Dance Symphony, which is however not one of the numbered symphonies.
I'm a Copland contrarian, preferring early Copland (especially Dance Symphony) and late Copland (especially Music for a Great City). Not so much the middle works.

the grogh score is a hidden masterpiece still to be discovered.
Copland would not have agreed. He found a better use of his material here.

This sounds in part surprisingly like Vaughan Williams' "Flos Campi," which premiered 4 years before Copland's symphony.
Not sure that the young Copland would have heard Williams "Flos Campi" when Copland was between 17-20 years old .
