I really liked this episode in a weird way as a kid because it was relatable (on the panic side, every new place gave me anxiety at first) and I liked seeing another side of the show and now as an adult I just think it really helps to show kids and older people that these things happen in life and even the most positive sponge friend will get in this situation and act like how we all would I love this about season one of this show
I agree, a primary reason why post-season 4 Spongebob just doesn't hit the same is the over "flanderization" of characters, especially Spongebob. Spongebob wasn't just naive and annoying, seasons 1-3 Spongebob got angry, got depressed, anxious and scared, and was relentlessly ambitious. Those first few years of the show were really something special, I hope every kid has the chance to see them.
One thing I love is how it shows just how weird and creepy life in the deep sea is. Stephen Hillenburg was a marine biologist so I have no doubt one of his reasons for making this episode was to showcase this. Many of the Rock Bottom residents are actually based on deep sea fish which I think is really cool
@@ssgaming7581 I think Rock Bottom has shown up in a few of the more recent episodes but I don't really keep up with the show anymore. I'm kind of a seasons 1-3 and movie purist tbh.
The bus driver intentionally ditching him over and over is too relatable, I've seen countless bus drivers (especially school bus drivers) who take their problems out on other people weather it's ditching them at the bus stop or not pulling over to let the conga line of traffic behind them pass stopping every block to pick up another kid. Any decent human being would pull over for 10 seconds but no they want to waste 20 minutes of everyone else's time.
@@ThatGuacamolyGuy really? Any idea why? I get not doing it where they pick a kid up but just driving between destinations, that's illegal?! If you could explain why I'd appreciate it because I'm not able to wrap my head around why that would be illegal, I do believe you though given where we are lol.
@@kaylabrown8719 I see, they should be given more time then. I have the same problem with paratransit medical appointments, they barely give them any time, not including traffic and other delays. Trying to squeeze out every dollar, truly sickening.
This must be a USA thing. Here in Brazil bus drivers have to always stop at the bus stops if someone wants to leave or enter the bus. Even if the bus is full the drivers are required to stop by so passengers can at least look and decide if they want to enter. Might be something with how busses operate in US. I heard in US public busses don't have ticket gates, passengers can just embark on the bus and don't pay if they don't want, the driver will be paid for his work regardless, so they don't care about picking up passengers. In Brazil busses have a ticket gate, you have pay if you want a seat.
wow, i never thought about the deeper context to the term rock bottom even though it seemed so obvious in hindsight now. you broke it down very well. your video essays are very nice, hidden gem of a channel
You reminded me of a ep that always creeped me the fuck out as a kid, because of how crazy unique the visuals are for it. And I loved the narrative you were able to garner from it, I never really got that as a kid tbh. What's your next video?
I miss the early, Lynchian episodes of SB. Funny to think how this show was almost kind of an underground hit before merch sales took off and Nick went kind of insane with the whole thing.
I really enjoyed this video and I don't watch Spongebob related videos because I stopped caring for them about 10 years ago. Still, that episode was one of the classics, in my opinion, that I never really forgot about. Great video. I don't think my time was wasted but rather enjoyed.
This was utterly brilliant. It's also so funny how even after all these years, the title "Rock Bottom" still went over my head like it did as a kid. Subscribed.
the way you break down an episode i just kinda dismissed as funny and cute into something so relatable and real, thats 1 amazing essay writing and 2 damn this show is good
Some bus drivers are assholes. I can relate to this episode. I remember I missed my stop when I was in hs and ended up in weird part of town and asking the bus driver for help they basically ignored me and drove off
This is the regular episode however i feared of this episode as a kid because when spongebob waiting at bus stop my tv starts gliching and all i see was spongebob waiting and looking at me.
I believe that the first bus driver called all the other bus drivers in the area and told them not to pick “an annoying yellow guy with a giant balloon” up.
Also, the majic conch really stuck with me. I have four kids and as a single dad I've seen every episode and movie several times Classic! I now live in Rio de Janiero and he is called Bobby Sponge. It's strange to watch episodes in Portuguese, especially the theme song at the start of each show. Much appreciated! Nick
I like your analysis. I’m into a lot of Weird Stories and Rock Bottom reminds me of two I recently read: Robert Aickman’s “The Waiting Room” and Shirley Jackson’s “The Bus”. Some other literary nerd help me verify this.
Now a good friend of mine pointed out to me not long ago that he kind of thought that this episode represented a bad acid trip because SpongeBob takes five glove candy pieces on his tongue and everything's fine and then next thing you know it all goes south from there and then he gets separated from his people Patrick and then he's stuck in his trip so to say and he doesn't understand his environment it's all foreign an alien to him he doesn't understand the people there he can't communicate with them because he's like in his own little acid Trip

The funniest part is how SpongeBob was first terrified of the place then later just more frustrated as episode goes on
