I understand that feeling of disappointment. I actually really like the color they turned out.

Soo... about an hour after this opening, I bought the "ugly" platter at 23:00 in the video. I really liked it. Matthew, I know it was not what you wanted and you were disappointed but it is one of my favorite pieces I purchased all weekend. This was my first trip to Seagrove and this was my first buy. I cannot wait to go back. Your pottery will be my first stop again.

My mentor once told me that you are always solving a problem when you're a potter. I have had this experience many times.

I know you was disappointed Matt but remember that someone will love the ones you don't love, so all is not lost. I love your platter bowls especially and the face mugs are fun too :) I think you're right about that salt pot refire, that could have caused the problems.
By the way, I decided to pay that Customs Tax after all and am expecting the prel delivery net Monday :)
What you said about being a patreon! Matthew don't you consider that some are patrons because they get SO much from your videos and chats? That's why I am ok! and I don't expect anything else from you other than the inspiration you give to me.
    Thanks for the video :)

I am very happy you, after all, decided to publish this video. We all fail sometimes - or at least don't get what we aimed for. Thats how we learn. And I think it servers a good purpose to show all us - much less experienced potters than you, that even the best fail sometimes

Love your videos. Love that you're willing to show your failures. People need to know how hard pottery is to get right and how unexpected complications can come up. It's comforting to newer potters who are having more spectacular failures. (Yep. That's me. )

I'm so sorry that you were disappointed in the reds. I think that they are beautiful, I wouldn't be surprised if they end up being very popular. I love your blue glazes and those face mugs are precious. Hope you have a very successful sale this weekend.

You're probably sick of hearing this but I really like especially the bigger narrow-necked vases with the flashed pink. Thanks for explaining why it happened I have never heard of that before.

I appreciate this video so much. I’m pretty new to pottery and it’s so refreshing to watch a kiln opening that you are disappointed in. However, what you don’t like will probably be someone’s favorite thing. I loved watching this video and the kid’s pieces are so awesome.

Yeah, I have had a lot of junk come out of the kiln before to find that people really wanted them because the colour really goes with their decor or just liked them. (define failure when you have to remove something from the kiln shelf with a hammer) 😃 it's just not what you expected!

I totally understand the disappointment Matt, but those pieces are still beautiful. I've had the same thing happen to me before and even though I wanted to throw it all in the dumpster other people loved them and wanted them. Looking forward to some more openings in the future, your work is incredible!

I think the "Not Red" pots are a beautiful color. And I predict that they're going to sell like hot cakes. Thanks for sharing what you perceive to be a fail, just to let us know that even the professionals have bad days sometimes. Chin up! I think there was a heck of a lot more in this opening that were winners rather than not. But, I get it. We artists tend to be our harshest critics. Take care!

Hey Mr. Kelley, you might want to watch a gentleman potter out of Nova Scotia by the name Vaughn Smith, he just had a kiln opening of his gas kiln, he is doing a dinner set for some client, the mugs he took out of that kiln were a beautiful red. He used a glaze if I can recall correctly called blue green copper red, in the electric kiln it was a light teal green but out of the gas kiln under reduction it turns red. Hope this is useful. Have a great day!

Thank you Matthew for sharing you are a fantastic potter I love your work. I'm a hobby potter in the UK and some of my kiln openings have been so bad, I have just wanted to sit and cry! But I am getting better and selling my work. I have learned so much from your videos keep on posting them, good or not so good I quite like the pink?

We all have that let down when we go to fire something and it comes out an epic fail and it is a feeling that words usually can’t explain. But what is nice to see is one you are honest and yet professional about it. Secondly (which you will probably throw something at me), is the color red that failed, (my 7 year old daughter and I do pottery), anyway she absolutely loves that color. If you would share it awesome if not I have no idea where to go to find one of them but She is determined to get that color and would definitely get one for her. (Yes I suck at internet). Went to esty but all I found was candles, definitely don’t want those.

I am going to tell you my thoughts and I am an amateur compared to you. We as the creator know what we expect to come out of the kiln. The buyer sees something that makes them happy about a color you hate. They don't know your expectations. One of my most favorite little jars was a lonely only, sold as a second because the Potter said the Glaze did not come out right. My sister loved it so much she took it from me!

Hi Mathew, I have been following you on you tube for quite a long time now and I really love your pottery. I have always found your videos both entertaining and also full of great tips and teaching on throwing techniques. I am in the UK and I think the design of your gas kiln is fantastic, not too big, not too small. Would you share the specs of your kiln at all as I would love to build one the same. It's the perfect size as you dont have to throw fr 2 months to fill it up. :) Keep making your beautiful pottery and don't be too disappointed, that colour will be someones favourites, beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say :) Oh one more thing, your kiln shelves look super thin, what are they made from?

Wouldn't technically be clickbait but if this was my video I would have called it "WORST KILN OPENING EVER!!! Potter rages over PINK FAIL!!!"

Hey Matthew, just stumbled across this vid from November... you’re someone I consider a “the real deal old school” potter so I hope you don’t take it the wrong way that I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who gets an occasional WTF moment from a glaze I thought I knew. I’m betting they’ve ALL sold though. Your work is just beautiful. Now...whatcha gonna do when someone wants you to recreate that cranberry color? Heh.

What would make a kiln that has fired fine for years, suddenly not fire properly? If the reduction isn't happening in all the space, could it be that it is not hot enough?

  • @benpatterson4452
    @benpatterson4452 4 роки тому

I think I have the issue with the red pinned down. How many goats did you slaughter as an offering to the kiln gods? If it was less than two, than there's your problem...
I love the black slip, with the sgraffito!
