  • Gifts of Friendship celebrates the annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D.C., highlighting the beauty of cherry blossoms along the Tidal Basin. It traces the history of the cherry trees in DC, which were a gift from Japan in 1912. The idea of planting the trees originated with Eliza Scidmore, a travel writer and photographer who was inspired by her travels to Japan. Despite initial setbacks, including the burning of the first shipment of trees, the festival became a cherished tradition in the city, symbolizing friendship between the U.S. and Japan. Nowadays, the festival features various events, including a parade, a Japanese street festival, and the crowning of a Cherry Blossom Queen at the DC Cherry Blossom festival. The National Park Service plays a vital role in maintaining the trees, while visitors are encouraged to appreciate and protect them. Discover the history of DC cherry blossoms in this documentary from WETA PBS.

I had the most wonderful date with the most wonderful girl 👫 at The Cherry Blossoms back in 2008. I was in my late 20s. It's 2024 now and we've been married for 15 years. Taking our 3 kids this year. 😮😊 🍒 🌸 💕 💗 💖 💓

Crowds are not “part of the fun.” Numbers should be restricted in all National Parks. 4:18 People pick blossoms , climb trees, compact earth off the paths which few use , trample grass on sides of paved walks! Life of trees is exceptionally less than they are in the wild. Crowds also have become so
large it’s impossible to walk safely along Tidal Basin. As a NPS volunteer I’ve given up trying to give walking tours around basin and politely telling people to not pick blossoms, climb trees, etc. next Sunday at 4 pm I’ll be giving a “talk” on the history of the trees here and back thousands of years in Japan. All welcome and free.
