“I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable.”-Dwight D. Eisenhower. Or, humans make plans and the fates laugh. Yet, it is always wise to be prepared. Nature shows no mercy. Cheers to your confidence. Thanks for the Vlog. Always interesting to view. Wishing you peace and good fortune. Happy Trails!
As the Amazing and Accomplished Eagle 🦅 Scout that you are, I’m happy to see you adhering to the model “safety first” ! 🥇 You are a very smart and well prepared man. I have no doubt you’ll finish the AT. You are doing great! No hurries. No worries. And you are so right… “Enjoying the journey” truly is what the AT and life should be about. ❤
Don't worry about June. I started my 2023 AT hike in Feb and started bumping into SOBO in NH and Maine; I finished mid-Jul. They were never a problem at shelters but you may find the shelters are full with Long Trail Hikers. At some point you will stop thinking of the destination and focus on the journey and you'll get there when you get there. As for mistakes, we all make them but as time goes on you will develop a routine. Stay safe and hike on.
Hi Stick. Feels like with the number of times you mentioned that stopping would put you further behind, that it was bothering you. Believe in yourself and trust those instincts. Bad weather was definitely coming in and temps were dropping. An extra 7 miles was not worth getting you and all your equipment wet, the risk of slippery conditions in high wind, and no guaranteed shelter space that potentially meant setting up a tent you are still learning on in the rain, wind, and dropping temps. Seems like clearly the right call. Stay confident and enjoy the journey.
I think you made the wise choice. I hope you do “embrace the suck” as learning to be comfortable being uncomfortable is a quality that will serve you well throughout life. 👍🏼🙏🏼
Monday, March 04th: Don’t second guess yourself. You made some good decisions! You make decisions everyday. You got this. You are strong. You are mentally prepared. Good luck! Happy Trails! Ross08
As the saying goes, "better safe than sorry"... it can be discouraging not making the miles you hope... just plan one day at a time and pat yourself on the back at the end. I think your doing awesome! 🥾😎🗻🌲🦌🐻🦊🤎🥾
You’re doing it right. Play it safe and build your strength! You got lots of time. Before you know it, you’ll have the capability to get in 25’s and 30 mile days.
@@sticktheeagle It is, it’s a 15 hour day at 2mph. But your legs will get there and there will be sections that you can walk 2.5-3.0 mph. 😃. Give it some time.
Friend you have your backpack so no worries. Be kind to yourself! You’re the only you, you have ! Be thankful you left the world’s troubles behind. Good call on weather! 😊
I’d have stopped there as well…especially with the front being so predictable. An option I might have considered, is pressing to Cheese Factory after the storm passed depending on how much time was left in the day.
Camping in a thunder storm gives you grate trail credentials and bragging rights. The weather forecasters normally give worst case scenario. They are kind of like the childhood character chicken little constantly screaming the sky is falling. If your goal is a certain spot then go for it deal with obstructions even if you don't make it after the journey is over you will have the satisfaction of knowing you went for it and never held back. You don't want to look back and say I coulda woulda shoulda. When you tell your grandchildren about the AT adventure you went on they will say my grandfather was quite the stud back in the day.
Keep your chin up. You're smart. You will figure it out. I'm on the AT in Connecticut. I'm staying at the Limstone Spring shelter tonight. I was thinking of what you said about them putting the shelters so far off the trail. Made me laugh.
Are you from CT, by chance? I think I recognize your accent! I know that, right now, your thinking is all about "can I make it to there, by then", but soon, you're not going to care. You'll just know, because your legs will be strong and your confidence will be stronger, that you'll be able to make it to wherever you want to make it in a day. Weather won't be as important. Or at least, not as urgent
After all of the consternation over the tent set up you never really gave it any attention after surviving the night. Did it suck? Was it perfect? What worked? What didn’t?
So it really needs a footprint. It worked, but the water seeped through the tent floor and that part of it wasn’t very pleasant. But the rain fly did work.
You're a very wise young man. It's a shame that everyone else doesn't see it in those terms. We live in a beautiful world but the terrain and elements can work against you. It's better to be safe than sorry and enjoy the journey. 🚶 🏕 🍳 🔥 ☔ 😊 🙏 Nice video! ❤
Hey thanks!! I have a venmo link in the description. As far as a tab, I don’t think I can do that until UA-cam finishes approving me, which I think can take while.
I agree, it’s great to plan so you have something that try to keep on track with, but your plans can quickly change at a moments notice
Yes, weather is unpredictable
@@sticktheeagle Happy trails

Great video. And I love how you’re being flexible, smart, and safe!

Yes, it’s embracing the journey not the destination

Stay safe Bryan! We will see you for your “summer job”!
Oh yes, you definitely will!! 😁
Awesome video! I'd love to hike the AT in one shot, but who has the time? LOL. Section hiking would be my thing! Great channel :)
Section hiking works!! That was my plan until life happened!
You've got this. Enjoy the journey and keep shining bright.
Thank you! You too!
I think you made the wise choice. I hope you do “embrace the suck” as learning to be comfortable being uncomfortable is a quality that will serve you well throughout life. 👍🏼🙏🏼
I think the AT offers that to me either way!!

Hey, thanks for that reminder!
Outstanding beautiful vlogging, hiking and scenery, you have a great state of mind, smart and spirit, all the very best, health and happiness.
Thanks
Hike and enjoy the journey. Glad you're doing great. You might not be at mile 80, but you have friends. Now relax and just ennjoy

Enjoy each day on the trail, whatever you face. You'll get your trail legs soon enough. Hike on👍
That’s my goal! Enjoy each and every day!!
Definitely! Enjoy the moment. Embrace the journey, the good and the bad.
One mile at a time. You've got this.
That’s the spirit! Thanks!

Thank you!

Good instincts about the storm.
Thanks! It felt like the right decision
Live, hike and learn. Enjoy, enjoy, and enjoy. Never embrace the suck. Trail Daze! You da man!
That’s what I love!! Hide when it rains!! Haha!
Maine is beautiful in the fall! Take your time and enjoy each day!
Thank you, I will. I appreciate the comment!
You made the right decision to wait out the storm. Safe travels.
I think so too! Thank you!
It is hard to plan so many miles a day this time of year due to the changing weather. You played it smart. Blackritz
I’m glad you think so. Weather changes fast and we need to be safe.
I’d have stopped there as well…especially with the front being so predictable. An option I might have considered, is pressing to Cheese Factory after the storm passed depending on how much time was left in the day.
About two hours of daylight. I was content with where I was at that point.
One foot in front of the other is all it takes..no pain no rain no maine
Yup!

That’s why I’m doing the AT. I don’t want to look back and say that I had the chance and I didn’t take it.
You’re doing well with your pace. The miles will come. Backpacking is not a “Walk in the Woods” when it’s a through hike. 😉
Each day on its own can be a walk in the woods. Easy, right? 😉
Wow,look at those trees dance. Im glad you stopped.
They didn’t even invite us to the dance
You said it, “live and learn.” Mike Tyson once said “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.”
Happy Trails
Sounds about right!
Keep your chin up. You're smart. You will figure it out. I'm on the AT in Connecticut. I'm staying at the Limstone Spring shelter tonight. I was thinking of what you said about them putting the shelters so far off the trail. Made me laugh.
Is that a far one? If I have a choice, I’m not walking more than a half mile to get to the shelter off trail.

That sounds like some bad weather! You are wise to err on the side of caution.
Thanks. I know it was the right call here.
You're doing great. How are the shoes working out?
So far so good! Much better than the boots!
Tray mountain shelter SUCKS in weather.
Is that from personal experience? I heard a few stories. And it didn’t even have a tarp anymore!
So I’ve heard!
I concur about Tray Mountain Shelter being lucky. The foot of my down sleeping bag got soaked.
Stop! And smell the roses. Life is too short to rush through it.
Yes!! So very true!!
No roses out just yet lol.
They say take it slow starting out.
And they say that for a reason!

That was my thought. Thanks for validating it. I appreciate your comment!
How much weight did get down when you switch to tent?
I lost 7 pounds overall!
Dude, when you get your trail legs, you can bust out a lot of miles in a short time. Don't stress over being a day or two behind.
Good point!!
Hey Sticks, why don’t you create a donation tab on UA-cam so we can send donations to help you out??
Hey thanks!! I have a venmo link in the description. As far as a tab, I don’t think I can do that until UA-cam finishes approving me, which I think can take while.
Man you do repeat yourself a Lot. Keep hiking.
Hmmm I wouldn’t put it past myself…
