First! Thank you buzzfeed for acknowledging Polynesian people and mai king an effort to hear from us! Big up BIGGS 685..and all the other poly Samoan reps :) I’m proud of you all! Buzzfeed come film some NEWZEALAND islanders we another flavour haha
American here, and of course I've never heard of this culture. I love watching these videos so that I can have my eyes opened to other people. And although these questions are probably very generic to y'all, they were a learning experience for me. So thank you very much. Tofa.
what I think of it is they are Samoan but they grow up over here in Australia and over here we have alot of new Zealands, Samoans, tongans, Fijians ect and if you grow up over here your basically counted as an Australian
I know there is a small Samoan culture here in the states as well, but I haven't had any experience with their culture. And unfortunately, also here in the states, we are more segregated. ☹️
yeah its really cool! and the disney movie Moana was made about our cultures, which is really cool because as you said before, my culture doesn't really get worldwide representation, so it's cool to see something different happen!
wow...as someone who is not from Australia, this is quite informative. The outside world knows very little about the islanders and their culture or even their everyday struggles. Thanks BuzzFeed OZ for educating me ❤️
Being multicultural, it can be really hard to fit in. So when yall started talking about the whole white washed bit - I felt my heart drop. Im Puerto Rican/Dominican - Samoan raised in Aus and all my childhood I felt like I was an outsider - because I couldn't speak Samoan or Spanish. I mostly had Aussie friends (Bless ❤) Not religious, dont have many siblings or grew up with my extended family members, etc. So I always got called out for it - even by half caste & Polynesian obsessed English teachers... But it never once discouraged me or took away my ability to love, respect & honour others. After-all, its about whats on the inside that makes us who we are. ❤ Bless xx
Maybe its too early in the morning for me, but when they said they've been told to go back to where they came from, i straight up teared up. How disrespectful to speak to a fellow person that way.
Something tells me you get both black people and Samoans in a room and it's gonna be lit 🔥🙌🏾. Whether we're laughing or it's a discussion it's gonna be good. I hear so many similarities in this video.
I would love to see a Tongan-Australian video in the future. Aah the street parades post MMT Tongan rugby league matches of the last RLWC in 2017 😂 win or lose, we in these streets. Much love to the Samoan bros and sisters in this video. Faafetai
You don’t need to be able to speak Samoan to be a Samoan… it’s very different in Australia. We’re also proud Aussies, and we love the Australian culture.
I love this video. I'm Tongan and Palangi and not being considered Pacific Islander by others burns. Not knowing the language is actually not always our fault tbh.
i feel your pain guys....growing up in pago...ii too was labeled afakasi which ii am but it really did set me a part from the other kids...felt left out most times.
"Go back to where you came from!" Me: Home bih?! That's the plan, but YOU might not make it back where ever tf u came from PLAYING WITH ME! GO DO SOMETHING SAFE!!! I live in the south in US... ❤
LOL at the party and church question. I think most of us Islanders have done it including our parents. True that... they might look like angels to you when they became parents but I bet they're the first culprits LOL. Yes, got tons of hiding...jungle discipline, not cool. Kids will sing anything that rhymes with my name, Mere. In Australia, most call me 'mere' like 'here' with 'm', so I changed it to Mary, English for Mere :) Just tell them, if they're not an Indigenous Australian, they can shut up LOL
“That’s how I get job interviews” 😂

“How young are your parents?” LMAOOO
That was a real moment.

I can't believe they've nearly all been followed by security! That's so wrong!
yeah idk it seems racist to me
I wonder why 😒😒
Gloria had a point. Most security are islanders... so Idk about racist
