My favorite makeover is probably Miz Cracker from season 10. Not only was the look adorable, but her daughter totally transformed in every single way. Her singing "Happy Birthday Mr. President" was EVERYTHING 😂
Asia’s makeover look is so underrated I feel like they gave her negative critics when she made her partner a matching outfit in a day and his face was gorgeous 😭
I’ve always found that the makeover challenge is consistently the worst-judged repeating challenge in drag race. Not all of them are badly judged, but when they are, it’s always super controversial. I think it has to do with the fact that it’s always done late in the season when the judges are looking to push a particular queen more than the others and like Mera said, that they change their criteria for a good makeover all the time.
The judging for the makeovers is never consistent and they tend to just use them to give the queen that is the second biggest frontrunner a win so that things look closer going into the finale.
Fashion Photo Ruview gave Yvie/Scarlett top toot of the week, so there’s that. They should have been at least safe as they had the most creative and fashionable looks and the best runway presentation.
She was! I think the judges honestly didn’t know that they were dressed as Bert and Ernie because they literally never mentioned it and Ross was so confused. I think she didn’t win because they didn’t get the reference, which sucks if that was the case.
This should have been the first make over double win honestly. Outstanding work from both of them while doing completely opposite looks that were leagues above the make overs of all the other queens
I love Chloe, but I wish we had someone who disagreed with Mera more, just to spice it up. Scarlett is super sweet but basically agrees with everything Mera says - I watch anyway but would love some different perspectives.
It's true that the most random judging is always in the makeover challenges. The thing not mentioned: Sometimes it's good that the look is pretty much identical, sometimes it's bad. I think makeover challenges are also the ones I always disagree with the judges.
Only issue is I think the look was Chinese inspired and Manila's mother is from the Philippines, so it kinda crossed into that territory, not only is it ok for her to wear that just because she is "Asian" but that's not her culture, but also does she have the right to allow someone decidedly not of Asian culture wear that as well. Personally I would like to think it's fine, but hard to tell nowadays.
That's my issue with today's standardads, everything is an offense and it's honestly so tiring. Manila did amazing and I highly doubt it impacted anyone negatively, surely no one died or got bullied because she wore that so why is it an issue especially when it's not making fun of the aesthetic? I just-
That specific look probably wouldn’t fly because it screams costume but you can definitely portray a look from different cultures with respect and consideration from the cultures you draw from.
Yes I felt so bad for vangie on that episode, no maxi challenge wins at all season 11 smh. She even knew it was over for her after not winning the makeover 😔
Miz Cracker and Miz Cookie will always be my top, especially because not only did Miz Cookie look amazing, she had a total personality makeover. Some of the worst placing makeovers (Joslyn, Shea, Kameron) were also because the makeup partner was not transformed, they weren't new. Cookie was born and lived that day. Also Cracker is just amazing at makeovers period, its a shame there wasn't one in AS5
I think they like the bodysuit in makeovers because it shows how tight they get the tuck. To be fair, Trinity and her makeover had reveals into the bodysuits.
hi Mera, I was so upset that Crystal didn't win the makeover challenge, to me that was a shocker. I have to agree with you both, out of all the makeovers, out of all the seasons, All Stars, UK Drag Race, Canada, and Holland Drag Race, Crystal's was the most creative, still pissed she didn't win that challenge. Thank you for this video, this was a great idea for a video.
I think my favorite is Naomi's, just because she had to make that in the work room. I honestly think all makeovers should be a sewing challenge as well, to make it more difficult. Crystal's makeover comes in a close second for me.
I hope season 13 have 2 outfits changes and Crystal did really good if jaida didn’t win she definitely would of won the make over challenge but I was happy that jaida won the makeover challenge
Chelsea Boy was ROBBED. Totally undervalued by the judges. And I felt the judges were quite ignorant, disregarding and plain rude (?) to the contestants' nonbinary identities and expressions. That felt kinda nasty and degrading towards those contestants. Disrespectful! That's the word I was looking for.
The makeover challenge is my least favourite reoccurring challenge. I always feel like the judging is so wishiwashi and bs and I rarely agree with the outcome (no one should have won the season 4 makeover). Hopefully season 13 doesn't have the buffoonery
It’s funny to me that s8 is considered one of the worst in terms of fashion but imo it had one of the best balls and makeover challenges (mostly because of how diverse the look queens are in terms of style)
It’s hard to pick one but I really did love Envy Peru’s makeover. It had everything I love in one makeover. Polish, uniqueness, whimsy, cute, BEAT, had a storyline, and props! I think it was a perfect makeover. I REALLY did love crystals makeover too tho, and She*ry’s makeover was amazing as well. While crystals was my favorite, I do agree with Jaida’s win on that one. In terms of makeup, it was the best beat on a makeover of all time IMO.
i think my fav is naomi's 1st look because she also had to make it. Even though I believe naomi has said she basically made her all stars look last minute because other people were making things too similar to her original planned look. THE ICON!
@Mera Mangle you made a video on biggest mysteries about 4 months ago!! One of things was about bebes lipstick choice on all stars after delas self elimination. Trinity’s podcast had aja on an episode told us who’s it was.
OMG, Mera!!! There was nothing offensive in Manila’s makeover and there is still nothing offensive! Manila brought the costume and she is Asian, what was she supposed to do, not participate?
@@lavenderkoi4931 What’s wrong with ‘brick’? (not disagreeing with you or being confrontational, I’m genuinely curious, I don’t know much about the term)
Thank you Mera and Chloe for a hysterical review. You two discussing the Trinity swimsuit and Chloe says something to the effect of "yeah they talk about not wanting the girls to wear body suits or swimsuits"... and Mera says "And then they reward that kind of behavior" LMGLBTQIAA+AO!!. I can just see RU dispensing food pallets for good runways and shocks for bad challenge performances!🏳️🌈
Season 3 honestly makes me wonder and sort of hope with Utica and Symone on a team, and Utica's tiny breakdown about the fear of being a white person being accused of cultural appropriation, will we have a moment where a strong, political black queen like Symone can have a discussion about her feelings about appropriation, especially since everything Symone wears is so urban chic, does she have anything Utica will feel comfortable wearing, will she have to convince Utica it's ok to wear the things she wears, are there some things Utica shouldn't be allowed to wear?
I have a genuine question, please someone explain to me: why is Symone's african runway (beads runway) not cultural appropiation? She's not from Africa, that clothing is from a totally different culture than hers. Is it because her ancestors were?
I’ve always thought they put Yvie low so she and Silky would say to each other why each should go home in front of the judges and the other queens (for the drama). I’m not sure they would have put Yvie in the bottom because she would have sent Silky home, and they didn’t want to risk losing Silky.
@@brunozevallosotazu4575 but judging based off the fact they look alike is kinda unfair cuz someone like Jaida who is black had a partner that was white so they were never gonna look alike.

I think Jaida won because they didn’t get Crystals reference. They seem pretty lost on what the concept. Also I think Manila’s makeover would have still be okay because it’s an Asian person allowing them to wear traditional outfits which I know in some Asian countries they love when u embrace their culture accurately
I think presentation often has a lot to do with it too. For example, the wearing of kimono by westerners in Japan is seen as a celebration of the culture (appreciation) but they should always be worn with the left side wrapped over the right, because the opposite is for the deceased. The kimono is a traditional garment, but its wear within the culture is not restricted by social status or religious role, and there is even a movement to more modernize its wear through more casual fabrics and styling. And I think that Manila’s makeover looks fall into the same category. That said, Trixie’s green runway in Season 7, while the dress was fine, the hair with the fortune cookie and takeout box was pretty yeesh.
The makeover is the worst challenge each season, I wish they’d just drop it tbh. The looks are almost never exciting (Yvie and Crystal are imo the only interesting looks), the judging is hot garbage, the criteria for what is considered good and bad is constantly fluctuating, they pretty much never reward creativity or thinking outside the box, and the storyline of the season takes a screeching halt to derail into some mediocre US reality TV emotional crap.
Literally I don’t see how its fair, it’s judged on outfits you bring from home like if someone has a designer designing everything for them and get paired with someone the same size of course they will do well. And then theres queens who don’t have designers making all their costumes and could be paired with someone bigger who there original costumes don’f fit. The only time it was fair was season 8 or the seasons like season 6 and prior where the fashion wasn’t outrageous and everyone was on an even playing field
I didn't like sashas at all. It was VERY basic and just boring to me then and now. Trinity's was okay but fit and I thought it gave a bit more at the time. It felt like them really rewarding DRAG
I LOVE everything about Chloe, her fair judgement, the consistently, and the mug (my fav part about her). The only thing I have a slight dislike/annoyance with is her little fake laugh. It just sounds so obviously fake. Other than that, she’s one of the best guests on the channel. I love her personality so much😂❤️
I don’t Think it’s cultural appropriation if someone from that culture gives you the permission to wear the clothes. Saying that I don’t know what Manila’s cultural background is 🤷🏻
I think they called it appropriation because in the season many of the queens were uncomfortable with Manila using caricatures of different Asian cultures (especially Chinese) despite being Filipino, and then being upset as the judges rewarded her for it. Shangela in particular made a differentiation between Yara (and later her and Alexis) using her culture vs Manila using Chinese culture for comedy by saying “she is not acting, she is”. Eventually Manila herself became uncomfortable and felt as if the judges were mostly rewarding her only when she presents a caricature.
I don’t wanna sound offensive but I genuinely don’t understand why it wouldn’t be appropriate for Manila, her being Asian, to makeover a white dude into an Asian outfit. Had it been a white queen, I’d get it, but Manila is not white, so it’s not that bad in my opinion. If someone could explain it to me, I’d really appreciate it because, as I said, really don’t get it but I’d really like to and to learn. Thanks a gazillion in advance.
Manila is Filipino, not Chinese, and that season a major conversation was about her use of caricatures of different Asian ethnicities, especially Chinese and the judges rewarding it.
