I found a 490 set in a box in a barn in New Hampshire that had probably been there 40 years, given how much dust and dirt it had on it. A thorough cleaning and lube plus the WD-40, and it runs fine and the e-unit works perfect now. Wow!
many thanks for this video ! it saved my 1654. it was dead as a door nail. lifeless. knowing ZERO about electricity i was very apprehnsive about taking out the motor. good thing . surprisingly I discovered the wire from the pick -up shoe was disconected. after resoldering it would take 10 × applications of power to get any movement. over& over the same. then some improvement but very erratic . after the WD40 it ran perfect . flawless! THANKS George WI
Thank you, Ben! This really does work - makes perfect sense to use a little WD40 to clean and lube up. I tried it and was an instant fix. Fixed my 1666!
Great video, Ben! I’m curious how you do this on a pre-war e-unit? My 635 Mercury is only going forward, but I don’t have the access holes on my e-unit. Any advice?
Hi! Which controller do you use to reverse the train? My Marx controller does not have the function.... My trains goes forward and backwards when they wants..kkk I could not find any info about...Thankss
I agree that WD40 helps a sticky e-unit. This however, is not lubrication. It is just cleaning of the internals of the e-unit. That cleaning allows the parts to move freely.

Do you have any idea why it changes direction when i stop and start?
There isn't any switch for changing direction!

Thanks Ben. I'll be doing this next.
how to know if my rails work
Check 2 rails on middle one on the side with a volt reader
I use wd40 also - works everytime on the lionel e-unit
Crc 626 or just plain Mineral oil is best.
