Thanks for the video comparison. I always hear how bad the N64 version is but after seeing the arcade version, the N64 version is a great port of the arcade. This is even more impressive when you consider the difference in the price of the hardware. Again thanks for posting.
Welfz Twingo Furs it wasn't bad but it couldn't hold a candle to the arcade. A lot of the songs save for redline shuffle and house special weren't as good.
It's REALLY fucking close, honestly. And there's a reason for that. The biggest reason that Cruis'n USA was sub-par on N64 (aside from being made by Williams instead of Eurocom), is that USA was rushed, to get it ready in time for the N64 launch window (though you'd think they had plenty of time, and it should have been available on launch DAY). With World, Midway actually allowed Eurocom to take their time making it, to ensure it would be as good as possible, as close to "Arcade Perfect" as possible. And to that end, while this game was originally supposed to release on N64 in 1997, it got quietly delayed all the way until September 1998 . And clearly, that was a GOOD thing, as not only is it basically arcade perfect, but they added extra content (new track, 4 player, Championship Mode, etc.). Great port, one of the best N64 games.
When you see the cars rotating up close, you can see how much better the details are in the arcade version. However, when the game is actually in progress, other than a significantly diminished HUD on the N64 version, the two look nearly identical. So this is a phenomenal port! Arcade is still better....but man, oh man is it hard to say anything bad about the home version! In terms of which version of the music I like better, it's give and take.
Nintendo 64 version have a worse sounds, voices, effects and music. But it's true, except for the censorship the game is a very faithful port and I like this.
Yeah it’s a good port honestly. I think probably the reason gamers at the time were a bit disappointed was just because everyone was told that the arcade used the N64’s hardware so people expected the port to be identical. I guess it’s a bit like that Sony PS3 E3, people felt lied to a bit. But I love the port and have great memories playing the arcade game. One in particular when a friend got really far in the game in the arcades and I was rooting for him. But suddenly his leg started to twitch out of control and he could no longer hold the acceleration pedal and couldn’t finish the race but he was almost at the finish line 😸. It was so heartbreakingly hilarious
I've played both versions in actual hardware. Though the arcade was innovative at the time (but hard to play), the N64 is actually a good home port. I don't know what got in people's heads saying it's bad, specifically the music, but, trust me, it's good. Only thing I criticize is the minor censorship of the trophy girl and the ending when you reach the White House.
This game was unfairly hammered back in the day, but there is something fun about it, it has good controls, it's fast and reminds me of a 16bit racer with way better graphics.
Many thought the semi-digitized graphics, and the game's overall vibe/presentation, was "cheesy". But screw them, right? It was fun as hell in the arcade, and Eurocom did a hell of a job making it great for N64 as well.

There is just one flaw from the N64 version - Once you get some lead on other cars, they lose all their speed and never catches you back. So if you manage to get a lead and they spin out, that's a free-win. You can hit traffic more than 3 times and they won't catch you back. Another major difference is cornering drops almost no speed, meanwhile in the arcades it costs you a lot of speed. In the arcade you have to find the peak grip of your cornering without losing speed, this doesn't happen on n64 because you simply doesn't need to. I think the IA algorithm to lose all their speed was made intentionally, to make the game easier, and reduce the aumont of on-screen racers, saving a lot of n64's cpu time. It was my first n64 and only game for quite a long time, so I know absolutely everything about the n64 port. If these two aspects were changed, the game would be almost a perfect port of the arcade. When I was a kid it seemed like the arcade graphics were a little better and so was the sound... But my N64 was hooked up to a really old TV when I was a kid
The arcade machine was laughable on release with arcades struggling to get people to play when they had Ridge/Rave Racer and Virtua Racing still pulling people in, the only hype it had was because people wanted to see what this Ultra 64 machine could do, overall decent port of a average racer that was even more behind the times when it hit the N64!
I don't know where you live but there is no way, shape, or form any of the Cruis'n games "struggled" to get quarters or tokens in any arcade, bowling-alley, or theme park I've been to. *ALL* the racing games in that era were great. Stop being biased.
Although Cruis'n USA actually did better than Daytona USA in the US (both made in the same year, and the latter also being released by SEGA like Virtua Racing), I agree. This game was just typical Midway, with repetitive gameplay.
Very close versions here. It looks like one of the biggest differences is they used a larger ROM size for the arcade version which is why it has some high res textures (especially on the cars on the title screen). The pop-in on the N64 version is better than the arcade version because it fades in instead of just appearing on a single frame as it does in the arcade version. Car shadows on the N64 versions are just boxes, which is odd. I'm guessing it's a small square image scaled while the arcade version probably used a larger rounded rect. Again, this would fall under ROM size issues for the N64 version.
The one thing that I didnt understand at the time was most of the midwest states were skipped and would take you straight to Iowa right after Arizona. I think a good chunk of the game was in california and had they only used maybe three stages from California they would have been able to develop stages for Oklahoma, Colorado and maybe South Dakota.
Cool so many memories, I was hoping that when the Sega Dreamcast came out this title would get the official upgrade it highly deserved like they did Soul Calibur. The Dreamcast version port of this game would of been better than the arcade and 64 version combined I promise you that with all the trimmings. You'd get the full bikini outfit at the end of the race 👍😁😎👌
@@aaron_aj_knight_95 You're absolutely right. I still love this game and what midway should have done was at least ported a perfect arcade version to the Panasonic 3DO at the time it would of made total sense. By the time Dreamcast came out I had moved on to Tokyo Extreme Racer. That game is criminally underrated for sure👍😎👌
Markell Hawthorne did killer instinct port live up to the hype the arcade machine claimed? Reports said it also was going to be arcade perfect.... it wasn’t close.

It's Nintendo's fault. With that said, Midway did the best they could with the limits they had to work with. In any case, you are nitpicking.
When I was a kid it seemed like the arcade graphics were a little better and so was the sound... But my N64 was hooked up to a really old TV when I was a kid
If your TV was still using one of those old RF or composite AV inputs, then you were missing like HALF of the picture!
The N64 sure had it rough in it's first year. KI Gold, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, THIS.
So true. Ridge Racer and Daytona USA were masterpieces of the arcades.
Arcade version all the way for me.
Just posting to add some English.
Virtually identical.
I wonder who actually was the woman who gives the trophy. What the actress' name was.
Anutza Herling.
Identico!!!pregi e difetti dell'arcade
Never played this game before, but they both equally looks good
But hey the N64 shows shadows of the cars in the garage. If that helps any.
Was it just me or were the audio recordings where at the opposite side of thier respective footage?
Cool so many memories, I was hoping that when the Sega Dreamcast came out this title would get the official upgrade it highly deserved like they did Soul Calibur. The Dreamcast version port of this game would of been better than the arcade and 64 version combined I promise you that with all the trimmings. You'd get the full bikini outfit at the end of the race 👍😁😎👌
Too bad it was Nintendo only. It surely would have fixed the mistakes they made with the N64 version.
@@aaron_aj_knight_95 It's why the SanFran/Rush series basically exists.
Cruis'n YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH
almost the same, good port
loved this game in both arcades and n64. the n64 game got bad reviews everywhere, me and my bro where like...why. it's a great port still.
The Arcade version is 5 out of 5.
BEST ARCADE
Those chicks in the starting line looked thicker when I was a kid...
Their IQ has gone up since?
are you using emulation for the N64
If you like this game, try "Cruise'N Blast" on Nintendo Switch. It even brings back the school bus.
The N64 was a graphical disappointment since they hyped it do be a arcade perfect system
This was just a bad port. Don't blame the system.
Markell Hawthorne did killer instinct port live up to the hype the arcade machine claimed? Reports said it also was going to be arcade perfect.... it wasn’t close.
@@MarklandDesignsOfAtlanta It was still a better port than this, imo.
Markell Hawthorne I can agree with you on that totally lol
Both versions look very close, except the arcade cars have a better polygon count, a bit better texture detail, and a bit better framerate.. but not that much.
Has anyone made a rom hack for the n64 version to have the arcade music?
once you see the arcade version, your eyes are spoiled.
You forgot to show the cow gore from the arcade version that was omitted from the N64 version.
i forgot the testarossa was in this one
I like the arcade version better
N64 needs more bikinis
They need to KILL all the soccermoms first! >: (
good conversion
Something in favor of N64 is the better z-buffer precision (Less wobbly geometry) And better anti-aliasing and filtering.
The arcade seems a better one
Expected the N64 to fare far worse here, but it is so close!
Faz do Cruis'n'World Arcade vs Nintendo 64
If they made it for the Neo Geo both versions would be the same.
The Neo Geo cannot handle textured polygons though.
Arcade for the win!
In my opinion Arcade version boasts better graphics and sound with speedometer while 64 version offers music.
