- The Potawatomi Zoo is a 23-acre (9.3 ha) zoological park located in South Bend, Indiana, United States. The Zoo is nestled in Potawatomi Park between the St. Joseph River and the Grand Trunk railroad in the east side neighborhood of River Park. Founded in 1921, it is Indiana's second oldest Zoo. The zoo's mission is to inspire excellence in education, conservation, and improved animal quality of life. It features over 400 animals and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
Exhibits
The Potawatomi Zoo is home to over 400 animals and the zoo participates in over 56 Species Survival Plans.
Africa
The Africa section spans much of the eastern third of the zoo. Leaving the Zoo Farm the Africa section begins with the Old World Monkeys exhibit which is home to black-and-white Colobus monkeys. In this part of the zoo you will also find Southern ground hornbills, lions, Plains zebra, addax, Diana monkeys, chimpanzees, African wild dogs, Greater kudo, and ostrich. In 2017, it became the first accredited zoo in the state of Indiana to house a pair of okapi, a rare forest-dwelling relative of the common giraffe. In 2019, the zoo announced the addition of a Southern white rhinoceros.
Asia
The Potawatomi Zoo is home to numerous species that are native to parts of Asia but these exhibits are spread throughout the zoo rather than being in one section. Near the front gate on the east side of the zoo is the Amur tiger exhibit and the Sichuan takins. In 2014, a red panda and muntjac exhibit was added near the front gate on the western side.
Australian Trail
In the middle of the zoo is the Australian Trail, which allows you to walk among emus, kangaroos, and Bennett's wallabies. This exhibit also includes a yellow-crested cockatoo, laughing kookaburra, and black swans.
Cat House
The zoo's Cat House was its first permanent structure built during the Great Depression as part of the Works Progress Administration. The Cat House includes outdoor exhibits for a snow leopard and Amur leopards. The birth of rare Amur leopard cubs in the summer of 2016 was a big hit.
Learning Center
The Learning Center is located at the front of the zoo. It is home to many smaller creatures and the Zoo's Education department. Animals on exhibit include two-toed sloth, golden lion tamarin, cotton-top tamarin, white-faced saki, red-rumped agouti, three-banded armadillo, ring-tailed lemur, squirrel monkeys, green iguana, banded mongoose, Madagascar hissing cockroach, Texas brown tarantula, Goliath bird eating tarantula, Chilean tarantula, Emperor scorpion, Malaysian scorpion, vinegaroon, as well as various turtles, snakes, geckos, frogs, skinks and other reptiles and amphibians.
The Americas
The western half of the zoo is home to exhibits representing North and South America. A key feature of the Americas section includes the bison yard which is home to four American bison. In 2011, the zoo added a North American river otter exhibit in the Americas section. The otter exhibit utilizes a green roof, the first of its kind to be used on a municipal building in South Bend. The Americas also includes bobcats, red fox, Eastern screech owl, red-tailed hawk, prairie dogs, American alligator, capybara, giant anteaters, blue-and-yellow macaw, green-winged macaw.
Zoo Farm
Pet and feed the animals in the Zoo Farm. Animals at the Zoo Farm include alpacas, goats, sheep, Jersey cow, donkeys, turkeys, chickens, and a pot-bellied pig.

Nice showcase of a lesser known zoo. I was not aware South Bend had something so nice to offer!
It's a really nice zoo, with the new updates coming soon it will make the experience even better.
InstaBlaster.
come back to the Potawatomi Zoo for their brand new giraffe exhibit which already opened and their brand new lion exhibit coming in the near future
The giraffe habitat was under construction during my visit. The lion habitat was being placed in the old chimpanzees habitat. I'll go back again sometime in the future.
We used to go to that zoo all the time when we lived in South Bend back in the 1960s. It looks totally different now.
The zoo has been making improvements over the years. Most zoo's are 100% better than they we're back then.
Have you ever been to the Columbian Park Zoo Fort Wayne Children's Zoo Indianapolis Zoo Mesker Park Zoo or Washington Park Zoo before
That sheep joke was very funny tom
Thank You 😆
Can't wait to go, I just moved to South Bend and I am right down the street from the zoo, going to get an annual pass and enjoy my retirement here in this awesome town that I love so much more than Southern Calif. with its boring warm weather and sky-high prices!
This was a fantastic zoo, so much to see. I'll have to come back again to see the new habitats. Enjoy your retirement 😁

@@TreySarver-p5x not yet but i will get there, thanks!

I made it to this zoo once in 2010. I can see some changes, but I recognized well over 90% of what you showed. It was and still is a very nice zoo. It was the first time I saw a Takin and Ankole Cattle. I am glad to see taht the community continues to support it so well and that they are going through major improvements.
That was also the year I went to Potter park Zoo (Lansing, MI) and Binder Park Zoo (Battle Creek, MI), two zoos that I hope you visit one day.
It's always nice to see a community support their zoo's and aquariums. The Potawatomi Zoo is a great example of what can be achieved with support. I'm hoping to get to those other zoo's you mentioned.

I'm not sure if it was just the video but the lion habitat looked really small in this video (not as bad as the leopard or snow leopard cages) but it might be bigger in person so it's great they gave the lions more space. Most of the other habitats are pretty good imo
the three lemurs sleeping together was adorable 💕
Hehe, the zebra tradition sadly didn't continue as they straight up didn't appear at all 🦓
The zoo is doing fundraising to do rennovaion of the big cats habitats. Rhey plan to make larger habitats for them.
The new lion exhibit is now open with one male and two females. The giraffe is exhibit is fully open and operational now as well. The leopard exhibit isn't very big but has fun items for Anastasia to play with. The new lion exhibit is where the chimps were (remodeled of course) and the chimps are at a new zoo.
They have really blossomed
I love all your jokes in this video Tom!! At the goats your like ok all line up according to size
Had me laughing soooo hard man! Keep up the educational and entertaining videos Tom!! And the rhino you said behind the scenes get it omg Tom!!
Thanks, I can be corny sometimes 😆
@@TomsRoadTrippin you sure can be Tom! I have a couple questions for you! Firstly where do you stay when you go on Road Trips? And secondly what inspired you to start Tom’s Road Trippin?
Thanks Tom!
the big gray bird in the same exhibit with the capybara is actually called a crested screamer, they are native to south america. great video by the way.
Thank You, I appreciate that and for identifying the bird.
Oh , my was the pumpkin one googood did uuuu get one nd try or eat yum
I got the pumpkin doughnuts and they were delicious 😁
They plan to add an Andean Bear exhibit this year
They were doing some expansions when I was there, it's great to hear they are adding more.
Happy new year
I hope 2021 will make you happy
Thank You so much, I hope 2021 will make everyone happy 😊
Are you going to Minnesota in 2021
I'm hoping too
@@TomsRoadTrippin do you know what zoos and aquariums you are going to in Minnesota
Not yet, I'll post my itinerary for that road trip closer to my departure.

Hey Tom!
I thought you would like to know that I made a project in Science about how we can help animals in peril and that need our help! Most of my information was based on the signage in your videos and things you have said yourself! Guess what? My teacher loved it!
Just thought you’d like to know that Tom, thanks Tom, thanks to you, I was able to do very little research on this subject because I learned most of it from your amazing videos!
That's Fantastic Noah, I'm so happy to hear my vids helped you learn about helping Wildlife.
@@TomsRoadTrippin Did my first comment bring a smile to your face Tom? Did it make you feel good about yourself?
It did, always so nice to hear from people how my vids have helped them. 😁
What animals were not out

Buenardoo
Gracias, me alegro de que hayas disfrutado

The zoo train was open and I took a ride. No reptile house at this zoo.
@@TomsRoadTrippin there is a reptile house but because of corona its closed

Hey Tom can you go to another attraction, I know you go to zoos and aquariums, Ripley’s and theme parks but could u go to wax museums but not just any wax museum, Madame Tussaud’s, they make wax figures of famous people and there are a few across the world(to name a few,Orlando, San Francisco, Hollywood , some in Europe and some in Asia, including Singapore!) I hope you could go to all and if it is too much to ask, its ok
As a matter of fact I recently visited the Orlando location. I did the Sealife Aquarium as well. Those will be out in February, I plan to visit others around the country.
Ok thanks
I volunteer at Potawatomi Zoo!
That's great, you picked a wonderful zoo to volunteer at. I'll be sure to return once the new habitats are completely finished.
It'll also be nice to have giraffe 😁
@@TomsRoadTrippin We finished the new lion exhibit at Potawatomi Zoo, and our next step is a new Andean Bear Exhibit with a new Restaurant Area next to it.

Do you go on the carousel
No, I don't typically go on the carousel at zoo's as they are usually only for children.
Hey Tom
Can you clear something up for me?
When I found your channel, I was a little confused about your upload schedule and why you post videos from 3 months ago, I understand a bit more now but could you clear some things up and why you only upload once a week? Please don’t feel like I’m attacking or anything! I’m just curious!
I haven’t watched the video yet but I will, I’m just a bit busy at the moment!
Thanks Tom!
Since my content is about Road Trips and travel I can only get content when I'm on the road. I film as many different locations as I can on each road trip. I release new vids once a week so I have consistent new content.
@@TomsRoadTrippin OK
Thanks for the reply Tom!
Have a good trip!!
Thanks Noah 😷
@@TomsRoadTrippin No problem Tom! Please stay safe! At this point you are really kind of like a friend!
I use love going to the zoo when I was a kid it was a highlight of my day but last time I was home. I would never go back. South bend Indiana is a dump now so sad. I was raised there now the cops are scary they will attack you in your home and I was only visiting. Haven’t been home since 2013 and the time before that was 1988
I wasn't in the area beyond the zoo, so I didn't realize the area was as bad as you mentioned. I'm glad the zoo was nice, I'm sorry the area you grew up in changed for the worse.
