  • Optical microscopes cannot distinguish between objects that are closer together than about 200 nanometers - about one two hundredth of a hair's breadth. The reason for this is the wave nature of light, the half wavelength of which roughly corresponds to those 200 nanometers. The STED microscopy developed by Stefan Hell is the first optical microscope technology to go beyond this magic barrier, enabling researchers to gain fascinating insights into the nanoworld.

I remember once I went to Stefan's lab and borrowed two polarizing filters, during my Ph.D in MPI goettingen. Nice man and a great scientist ! very kind and helpful.
    Congratulations !

Greetings from Romania, another Romanian scientist man by birth and primary education, bravo profesor Stefan Hell. All the best for you and your research work in the chemistry science area! He is the fourth Romanian by birth and mainly education to receive the Nobel the others being Herta Muller (2009, Literature), Elie Wiesel (1986, Pace) și George Emil Palade (1974, Medicine).

schnulli2468 Actually Elie Wiesel and Herta Muller are Jewish ethnics and George Emil Palade it`s 100% Romanian etnic but all of them are born and educate in Romania for that reason they are Romanians and part of the Romanian culture heritage wherever they live right now, don`t be envie my friend evan ours president it`s an German etnic but he is Romanian because it`s born and educated here and that`s a leason of tolerance and good understanding between nations and nationalties, like you see non of them except the president are German ethnic but that`s irelevant, Romania it`s a country where live more then 20 ethnic nationality but all of them mabe ecxept the Hungarien fell that they are part of this big nation.

I feel like they are fudging the explanation. Patches of shadow are just as as subject to the resolution limit of one frequency as scanning beams are. This had to be an interaction phenomena or some type of stochastic phenomena.

Hell means "bright" in german, so that's appropriate.
