Christmas Tree Decorating with Lametta Tinsel - inspired by Pinterest

- I am now a tinsel expert ! This is my journey on figuring out how to use this tinsel inspired by images of old fashioned christmas trees on Pinterest. It is called Lametta tinsel, but also sometimes referred to as icicles, foil tinsel, lead tinsel or draped tinsel. I ended up using 20 sheets of tinsel on my 6ft christmas tree and honestly, I would have kept adding more if I didn't run out of tinsel!

My grandmother has a box of REAL silver tinsel from the 1920s. She’s 86 and it was her mother’s. She’s used it annually on the tree in her home for 65 years. Each single strand goes on one by one. And each single strand goes back in the box one by one. Every Christmas. For 65 Years. The result is _STUNNING_ but oh dear sweet God …
Wow that’s incredible! I bet it looks stunning when on the tree. What an amazing thing to have in the family!
@@phoebedoeseverything it really is incredible but I just don’t know how she does it. It’s like a meditation for her I suppose. You did a phenomenal job with yours btw
Thank you! 💖 I think it definitely is meditative for sure! I hope to be like your grandmother one day!
Wow I can just picture it like icicles dripping amazing she's kept them all. 🌟💚
So lucky. My mom had hers too. Heavy
This brought back so MANY memories. My mother thought a tre wasn't complete without icicles. She was METICULOUS about how she put them on. She had a technique to putting them on. I will admit it brought the tree to life with a beautiful glow, but it was such a pain to keep them on the tree. Also, we always put them on last.
I definitely will be putting them on last in the future! I also think I will be like your mother being meticulous with my technique 🤓
NOT tacky! Authentic & beautifully old-fashioned/retro/vintage.
My absolute favorite🌲 in every old movie..
We did it years ago but finally ended up throwing it on the tree by the handful…Busy mom w 2 little boys.
It still looked pretty..just not perfect.
I am sure it was beautiful, I think perfection is boring anyway!
I have been wanting to do an icicle themed Christmas tree or something different and this is simply beautiful!! It's a breath of fresh air compared to how everyone is doing the overly done same trees. They are pretty but yes starting to get boring.. I think you just brought back an old trend that people will start doing again.
I completely agree about the overly done trees. It’s so refreshing to have something so different to look at in my living room. 💖
Very Department Store & impersonal.
New subscriber here. I remember as a kid back in the 1980s my parents adding tinsel to the tree but only used one package of tinsel and it just didn't look right. I'm glad youtube suggested this video, I think your tree looks great 👍 I only find pictures of trees like this already made up so I really enjoyed watching the process. I have a small tree Im going to do this to. Thank you for sharing and the inspiration.
I am glad you enjoyed it and got some inspiration! 💕
I'm a senior. We had real metal tinsel we used years after year. We took about 6 strands, folded onto a hook. The trick to the beauty is having it hang straight and have REAL tinsel
That sounds amazing, I hope to get some one day!!!
I like it.
Mom decorated from the bottom up . She would use 2 strands per limb. And we kids helped she made sure we did the edges of the libs. 2 strands only. . Tinsel was the last thing to go on the tree.
Bottom up definitely seems to be the way to go! I think two strands per limb would be very subtle and nice, my approach was a lot more full on 🤪
Great job explaining
Thanks! 😊
I love tinsel. The more the merrier. 🎅🏼🎄
I agree!!
Been using tinsel for 50 years, the more the merrier!
It looks fabulous!! Well done
I am glad you liked it!!
Beautiful! You have inspired me to do my tree with tinsel! Used to put it on my real tree many years ago!
I’m glad I’ve inspired you! I’m sure it will look beautiful 💖
Gorgeous!!!!
I’m glad you liked it!
I LOVE THE CLASSIC TINSEL ON CHRISTMAS TREES...and no one but you has it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think we are going to see more of it in the future, it’s becoming a trend!! 🤩🤩
I love it. Def gives the tree a vintage look
Thank you! 💕
I love the colors and items you used for your living room decor!
Tree looks good as is.👍
If you wanted to add ornaments you should do that before the tinsel.
I agree with you! I think I might do it with ornaments next year!
This reminds me of using it as a child. My mom used to have us put on 2 at a time. Time confusing. But when my mom put it on it looked fabulous
If I didn’t go so over the top with the tinsel I definitely think two at a time would work well!
i love it !!!! twinkiling lights spread the colors to reflect off the tinsel too !!!
Thank you! 😊
ALWAYS HAVE TINSEL ON THE TREE LOOKS SO BEAUTIFUL / ELEGANT REMINDS ME OF OLD CHRISTMAS
I can now see why people love it so much! 😊
Beautiful decor
Thank you!
Good choice Phoebe, Tree looks fabulous. I grew up with tinsel. Great job.
Thank you! 😊
Great job, beautiful
Thank you!
It’s gorgeous!!! 🥰
Thank you!
OMG 😮❤ IM IN LOVE!!!!
😍
My mom would use tinsel after she has decorated the tree with lights, ornaments and garland. It would be her finishing touch. She didn’t do one strand at a time. She would take several (about 6 or ten) and drape the bunch on the top end of each branch and it looked amazing. Thanks for taking me back to my childhood 🎉
It must have been a very beautiful tree!
YES! the tinsel was the finsher to the tree, after the lights, ornaments, just at edge to give it a shimmer- Tinsel Tip; Turn Christmas Tree Light Off while adding Tinsel, turn on every so often to see how it looks. Merry Christmas🎄🎁
This was helpful AND entertaining to watch, thanks 😄🎄
I’m so glad you enjoyed! Merry Christmas! 🎄
Thank you so much for sharing your tried and tested technique I can’t wait to do this this year. 😊
I hope my tips are helpful! 😊
Absolutely stunning, congratulation
Thank you!
It looks great. We did this when I was a kid in the 70's. Let me tell you it never looked that good.
I hope it comes back in fashion I’m loving it and wish I saw it done more often!!
😊looks beautiful
Thank you!
I'm in love with this!! Worth every bit of tinsel woah!!!!
I’m so glad you like it! 😊
Thank you so much for these tips! 🤍
I am glad it helped you! 💕
It's beautiful 😍
Thank you!!
Omg. Absolutely love it!! Would love to see big ornaments right in the tree xx
It’s very tempting to do that!!
Thank you for the tips!🌲
I decided to look for a video before I started adding tinsel to my tree for the fist time. The technique you use to hand them looks so much better than draping it over both sides of the branch.
I am glad I can share the technique I learned!
Thank you, you've given me inspiration for my Christmas tree next year. :)
I’m glad to have given you inspiration! 💕
I drape and cover every inch. It brings life and movement to the tree
Some people think it’s too much but I think that’s the way to go!!
@@phoebedoeseverything no. More is better.
It turned out beautifully. Thank you for sharing. Happy Holidays and God bless.
Thank you so much for the kind words, same to you 💖
The process is you get everything on your tree, and then you put each one individually, it's a seasonal project to keep your kids occupied during the season. Nice job though.
Very clever idea to keep kids occupied!!
It came out awesome btw
Thank you!
Interesting project, sure brings back some memories...wonder what it would look like on a white tree 🤩
It would look glorious on a white tree!! Great idea!
Doing this now at this very moment for something new 🙏🏽
Good luck!!!
in America, this tinsel comes, or used to come in boxes of like 150 or more individual pieces, not strips or clumps, per box. i havent used it in years, but i have always liked it when its done well. when using this type of tinsel, start at the bottom, making sure you use enough, and work your way up the tree. when using any kind of hanging decor like this or long ornaments, always start at the bottom and work your way up. that way the tinsel or ornaments on the upper part will not get in the way of decorating the bottom. i used to decorate trees for a living and you live and learn !!!!!!
You are absolutely right about starting from the bottom, I have definitely learned that for the future!! Thanks for sharing
I thought you were supposed to start at the top...
WELL DONE YOU Tinsel Expert! Never having exposure to tinsel you did a SMASHING job. I think you broke the tinsel code-stroke the tip of the branch and pull inward. PS. PLEASE make a short, reel of your discovery. It is that epic and will be traffic generating-viral.
My understanding is: The reason it went out of vogue is it was actually METAL. We didn't have mylar then. People would discard their live tree without removing the tinsel on the curb for the trash collection. It became a nightmare for the environment. Wildlife would swallow it and as you can imagine that metal balls up fills up tummies and no space for food as it never passes.
In my home only skilled installers were permitted to attach it to the tree. IE: my older brother. I still have issues over that. He got to touch everything delicate and valuable, and I could only watch. "you are a girl and you aren't old enough". Arrrggggh. FUN fact: many would just stand back and TOSS the tinsel in the air, allow it to land come what may.😮(SHOCKING isn't it?) XO
Your comment gave me a good old chuckle! I hope you allow yourself to put the tinsel up now and do all the other important jobs! I’m working on a reel, will upload soon!
Thanks so much for the support 😊
@@phoebedoeseverything I will I WILL! Thank you for the encouragement!
My mother used to do this to our tree, one by one. I just cut beads and hang them like the old Icicles and it gives a great look without all of that frustration.
That’s a great idea!
I love the way Lametta looks on Christmas trees. It's strange, I grew up throughout the late 70's, 80's, and 90's, but I don't remember ever seeing Lametta.
The first time I remember seeing it was just a few weeks ago when I was looking for old photos of Christmas trees in the 80's on Google, and saw loads of trees covered in it, I think mainly it was an American thing?
So when looking on ebay and Amazon I was really surprised at how much of it is being sold over here in the UK right now, as though it's as popular as regular tinsel.
I'm going to get some but I've got no idea of how many packets I should buy, and what length to go for.
Great tips on how to put it on the branches, thanks!
I agree I think it might have been an American thing back then.
The cheaper tinsel I used was from wilko! It was only 80p for a packet! Good luck!!
Looks good. I do this every year but not as much as that. I think I have the same tree but smaller and I took off the lights because I'm going with candles this year.
I bet that looks beautiful! I’d love to try candles I’ve seen some stunning ones on Pinterest, very inspiring
Iron your shirt 😂😂😂. That comment was hilarious!
😜 I hate ironing!!
The tree is gorgeous. Ornaments might take away from the magical vision you created.
I thought the same! Maybe next year I’ll consider it, but this year want to leave it with this vibe!
That looks beautiful . The hassle was worth it
I think so too! Although I might change my mind when it comes time to pack it up 😅
I loved the tinsel in the fifties when i was a kid and tinsel was made out of lead. It hung so perfectly on the tree. Unless your grandma let you throw it all over the tree like my gradma did. :)
Sounds like she was a fun grandma!!
I'm most comfortable with lametta tinsel! Putting garland on a tree stresses me TF out! I just can't do it! Edit: I have a black Christmas tree this year and I have white iridescent lametta tinsel thrown on it. I put pale green, blue, silver and white ornaments on first. I love how it turned out! Oh and white skirt, and white snowflake topper.
Wow that sounds great I love seeing such unique trees rather than everyone doing the same thing. Good on you!
That sounds stunning !
In my family, growing up, we tinseled the tree every year. But we stopped doing it when I was about 13. We found that it was a choking hazard for cats and dogs. They were more important to us than an amazing looking tree.
It seems it’s definitely only safe for people without pets !
Well done! I’m thinking this will be trending in the few years.
I think you are right about that!!!
So beautiful,
How many tinsels u used?
I bought from Amazon 20,000 tinsels..
It is enough for a regular tree size?
I used 20 sheets! Not sure how many individual ones that equals
Was the tinsel you used Mylar or metal/aluminum?
I think it was Mylar or similar! There’s a link in the description to the one I used!
Where we can buy that lametta tinsel madam? Thanks
Here’s a link to the good tinsel! I also have links to a similar cheaper tinsel, my scissors, and my Christmas tree in the description of this video!

I remember draping tinsel on the tree. The key is to get a tree that isn’t too thick with branches. Start on the inside of the branch near the trunk and keep adding tinsel all the way to the tip. More is more with tinsel.
I completely agree more is more! I agree a tree which isn’t too thick with branches is what you want for this, I might have to get a new tree next year 👀
In NZ, they grow and sell bushy pine trees for xmas trees which I have never liked, whereas in Europe and America they have lovely shapely fir trees which shows off the tinsel to good effect. I've noticed lately that the artificial trees they now sell here are looking more like fir trees which I might invest in because I like tinsel on a tree too. I've tried twice in my lifetime to decorate a tree with tinsel but failed to get the desired effect so gave up on the idea. After watching a video of xmas trees in the 50's with tinsel and your video and comments, has made me realise that it is a bit of an art-form. You've inspired me to give it another crack. May I wish you a merry Christmas. Cheers!
@@francisheperi4180 Merry Christmas from Canada 🇨🇦 🌲
tinsel across windows, like a curtain ..it gentlely moves and reflects on colored lights
I think that’s a great idea!!!
I’m doing it this year with over 300 shiny brite ornaments. I’m doing it one by one cuz it looks so good 😂. I’m currently in day 4 and looks like I’ll be doing this for 2 more days. There’s currently 9,000 tinsel.
WOW! I am very impressed. I am sure the hard work will pay off and it will look amazing
Your tree looks amazing!!! I love tinsel but very tedious to decorate with also be very careful if you have pets. My cat and dog already digested some of this!!!!
Thank you! 💕
Maybe the adding ornaments on the back will give some depth but mostly I'll put a star to top it off and call it quits lol, its beautiful btw
I think you are right!
tinsel aways goes on last..its the iceing on the tree...do not be afraid of tinsel....!!!!!
I’m definitely not scared anymore and will do it last next year now that I’ve got the hang of it! Although I assume I will have forgotten by then so will have to come back and re watch this video to remember my own tips 😜
Wow! Your sensibilities are spot on. Uniquely modern and fantastic in that space. Well done you.
What a compliment! Thank you very much! 💖
It was also made out of lead , so they hung strait,, and had some wieght
I can see how they would hang better if they had weight!!
It’s beautiful but as ornaments I think you should go with snowflakes ❄️, or cristal clear ornaments it could be you know glass, acrylic or something glamorous.
I think that’s a great idea!!! Might have to go shopping 👀
there is nothing cooler that tinsel !!!! it refelects the light , it is always gently moving, it is a most cool thing ever...do not use if you have cats ..or dogs that like to eat things..you can put it up at your windows...drape on your curtains.....it reflexs light, even in the dark...its magic in motion
I like that idea!
Too much hard work for me 😂but it’s Beautifully done 🎊 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you! I’m glad my hard work is appreciated 😅
I'm guessing you don't have cats😂😂. This style of tree was what my mum did in the 70's and 80's, I refuse to put tinsel on my tree, ornaments only. Looks great though.
Definitely don’t have cats! I usually am the same as you, ornaments only! But happy to have a change this year 😊
It will be a. Nightmare to take down, I grew up with this style of tree In the 1970s usa-but it’s still beautiful
Oh no! I’m now dreading it 😅
Love Love Love
Thanks!!
They tangle constantly and look bad unless draped properly. In did this for years...ugh.
When the door is open and the wind blows I get nervous for how much it will tangle 😂
Ornaments first then tinsel hon
You’re absolutely right, definitely how I’ll do it next year now I’ve got my tinsel strategy figured out!! 👌🏼
@@phoebedoeseverything I COAT my tree with tinsel😂 more is better. I feel it’s like putting a wedding veil on my tree! IMO it brings life to the tree. I do believe I’m doing your method when we do ours. We cut ours day after Thanksgiving. Loved your video. No one posts tinsel. I literally screamed YES😂😂😂😂
My tinsel is wavy...
I think wavy could look cool as well!
Aren't you supposed to put your ornaments first?
Definitely! I chose no ornaments that year!
@@phoebedoeseverything Oh wow..that was a year ago, wasn't it? 👀
@@candilastname7429 yep! I still love it this year as much as I did last year!!
tinsel is just put on any way you want ..no rules..kids love throwing tinsel gently on trees
And the more the better 🤪
You can reuse tinsel
Of course you can! I saved mine and have it in a box!
Gorgeous, but waaaay too time consuming!!!
It’s definitely big job!!
If you have pets, I don’t recommend, putting tinsel on your tree, because they will eat it. My dog Did 🤷🏻♀️
Good to know! I don’t have any pets luckily ✅
This is not tinsel, this is called lametta, tinsel comes in long garlands/strings
It has quite a few different names depending on what country you are in!
You can't even see the tree!
I definitely achieved the “excessive” look 🤪
Please note tinsel will kill a cat if they ingest it!
Good to be aware! Luckily I don’t have any pets
With an intro like that… I AM GRIPPED
My new Christmas tree theme is ugly Christmas tree. The uglier the better. I hate how people like to show off with their Christmas tree. Everyone posting them on FB IG and they host parties to show them off and how women judge you for how cheap your tree is or if you use plastic ornaments etc. pathetic
I love the ugly Christmas tree theme!
You talked too much. I just wished you got into action and do it.
😂
Way too much tinsel!
I want more 🤪
Not pretty at all
You’re definitely wrong!
I miss doing the tinsel on the tree. It was the on every tree growing up. We started off with the heavier metal tinsel and were so thrilled when the lighter tinsel hit the market. We added the lights and ornaments to our live tree, then at last we added the tinsel. I keep wondering if I could add tinsel again and thought I might try the curtain tinsel used for backdrops, tucking the end up under my tree topper and draping the long strands down the tree. Sadly, the strands on the curtains appear to be fairly wide and I don't think it will offer the same appearance. In the past, we pretty much left the tinsel on the trees and stacks of tinsel covered nearly needless trees would pile up to be hauled off or farmers would burn them in their back yards. We would see tinsel strands in bird nests and tinsel was often carried off by the wind. Thinking back, I'm not sure this was good for our planet. So I did a little research and came up with this (hope it helps): www.dailysabah.com/life/environment/forgo-tinsel-on-your-christmas-tree-if-you-want-to-be-green
I admire anyone who has the patience to add tinsel and the fortitude to remove every strand. It was backbreaking work when I was young.
I have done another video about taking down the tinsel, I saved almost all of it so I can reuse it for future years and it’s not so wasteful 😊
