- In this video I wanted to break down the cost of maintenance for a Subaru STI. Funny enough the Subaru WRX and BRZ both follow the same service schedule. The Service intervals in this video are broken down by the Subaru Service Schedule found in the Manual that comes with the car. It can be pretty large. My 2016 WRX just tipped 45K and it's been all me serving it with only the brake/clutch fluid being done at the dealership.
Rear brake pads (no disks) quoted by my local Subaru dealer came to $312. I just did front+rear with Centric disks and Hawk HPS pads for $450 in parts.
If you know how to DIY and have the space.... You will save a boatload regardless of what you drive.

People would save a lot more money if they didn’t follow the recommended intervals. Coming from a dealer tech, most of the services don’t need to be performed until after 60-70k or beyond. Inspect and replace if needed.

@@Smeedia I actually do have a question. Around the inlet for my turbo I have oil around the hose and clamp and the same for the intercooler outlet into the throttle body. Do I need to replace that turbo asap or is that something that can wait a month or two
Do you have an AOS on the car? Sounds like oil build up from thr PCV system pushing oil through the turbo inlet

Forgot to add.... A Fumoto F108F makes oil changes even easier.
I connect a 3/8" hose right into an empty oil container or windscreen wash bottle so there is no need for a messy pan to drain into.
Just make sure that it doesn't overflow since a VA WRX takes 5.4 quarts, and drains about the same.
AGREED. One of the first things I installed on my 2018 WRX. I change my oil from start to finish in just under 10 minutes. And the only reason it takes that long is cause the car is semi low so I gotta jack it up for a sec and then proper drain time. Only thing is... I change my oil and filter roughly every 1500 miles hahaha.
Nice videos you are doing. I hate those scheduled maintenance stuff because half of them could be done later if the part is still in good shape. Brakes can last much longer depending of your type of driving, filters sometimes are still in good shape, etc. When I was going at the dealer I always told them if it’s still works and still in good shape, don’t touch it even if that little book says to change it.

I paid a lot recently before finding your video for the oil change, cabin filter, breaks, rotors, head gaskets, and spark plugs. I dont want to say how much but it hurt.
I low key miss the south lol I lived over in Louisiana for a few years and it does get colder in the winter for a bit. The cost dealers charge for such basic items is ridiculous but that is how the majority of them make their money. Appreciate the support! 🔥

i just pulled and vacuumed my cabin air filter, i'm going to pikes peak cog railway next week (they just reopened after a $100.000.000 renovation). denver air was the world's worst - saturday, and that filter is all the lung protection you have unless you also wear an n95 mask. rock auto.com has cabin filters for min. $5 each + shpg. the oem filter is thin like a few tissue papers. i dug out some dirt and laid cinder blocks for the front wheels to roll onto to, and save cardboard to throw down where i'm laying and do my oil chg's. i plan to buy fumoto valves and hose kit for each car.

Are the drive belts included in the subaru 30k mile service? When I got a quote from subaru they quoted me $700 for brake and clutch fluid flush and an oil change lol. Planned to do it myself but, if the drive belts are included in the service I think I'd rather let them do it.
My local dealership also quoted me $4k to swap my brake pads and rotors lmao
People really don't understand that these cars are really not that hard to maintain, or crazy expensive to maintain compared to the other cars in their segment. Thank God every bolt on these cars is metric!
The upper echelon European sports cars are FAR more expensive to maintain.

You can syphon out the fluid or bleed it from the bleeder valve, I did this on the litch stip brace video 😁

Pads and rotors depends on how hard you drive, I typically do mine every 30K
How do you handle it if it's a or time thing? Would you still do the major services if you're way under in the miles?
I'm looking in my owner's manual and it says inspect the drive belt at 30,000 miles not replace them is it your recommendation to replace them every 30,000? I'm nearing up on the 30,000 Mark and I want to make sure I do everything right!!

I'm gonna just throw out that the ej25 needs a head gasket swap every 200k miles or so and that wouldn't be so bad alone but then you have everything that accompanies that either draining your wallet or stressing you out.
Thats with any engine though, get up to high high miles and most engines will need a full refresh

Appreciatw the support! You really wont have issues unless you beat the hell out of the car and neglect it. Engine problems are unavoidable in any car but an AOS will migrate the risk quite a bit. The EJ is a great engine it's just important to remember that it needs a little extra maintenance. Just stay on top of regular maintenance and you'll be fine 😁

Okay what the fuck, Subaru was trying to tell me at 30k to flush the diffs.. they wanted 600$ to do it so I started looking around saw your video and now I’m ultra confused. I have a 2020 wrx why is it the diffs are supposed to be serviced at 96k but they’re telling me at 30k

I run Amsoil XL 5W-30 in both my WRX and my wife's Legacy. OEM filters though.
Motul x-clean 5w40 and every 3 month...
I'd say most of the hidden costs of owning a used Subaru will probably be from the previous owner not you, it isn't HORRIBLY expensive to own these beauties, but it sure as hell can get expensive if you found one with high potential issues. I'm a firm believer on keeping oil changes 250kms earlier than when you are supposed to. Check your damn oil every gas fill-up and update your tune every time a lung-mod is installed. The money spent here is definitely worth it in the long-run, saves several grand from a rebuild. Regardless, Subarus are not for everyone..but it sure as hell will take good care of you if you reciprocate it. Another good video Tanner, thanks! Learned plenty from you since my subie ownership.

Bfs STi is a '15 with 165k (many cross country road trips), my 18' WRX just hit 20k on Wednesday (2nd subie, I had a 13' leggy 6speed I traded in with 130k). We do all our own maintenance with other subiebros and saves sooo much money. And yes, oil about every 3-4000 just to keep her fresh.
Perks of my Family owning a repair shop. Oil changes, tire rotations, filters, brakes, diff services etc.. all done by me. And I make my own invoices for the repairs. My bro even owns a couple Napa stores. I’m set for life!!!!

Clutch and main seal replacement at dealetship 1800 vs diy with exedy stage 1 400 dollars and 10 hrs of labor. 6200 dollars buys all the tools you need for whatever goes wrong bidirectional scan tool, smoke machine , quick jack leakdown kit etc
That's one factor I did not include was tools, only because the tool processing can be amortized out over multiple jobs it would pay for itself over time. Bit for those who already have the tools it's a great option. How do you like the quick Jack's? I've seen a lot of people use them but never got any feedback from someone

After watching the mini series on oil I was interested to see if changing your own oil on a car was even a viable option on a car with factory warranty. So I called my local Subaru dealership and asked. According to them you cannot retain a CPO or Powertrain warranty without having some kind of proof the labor one done by a professional. I’m more than qualified to change my own oil I worked as a technician for 2 years. But without any kind of proof that I am indeed a professional your warranty is still void. Even with receipts for the oil you purchased. So they pigeon hole us as consumers to either go back to the dealer or to a local shop. But if you have an STI I don’t recommend you have Firestone service your car. Also a brake job on a 18+ STI at the dealer for front pads and rotors is like $1,500+
They really upped the price on the 18+ brakes. Also thank you for verifying the oil changing information. Ridiculous that they require a professional change your oil. I am curious on what their definition of a professional is, like if someone needs a certification or just to work for a local shop.
Who knows. I still have my ASE certs which is more than can be said about a lot of local mechanics. But I still don’t feel like pushing that envelope. I think the best bet as a regular customer would be to do drivetrain related items at the dealer and save money on everything else one can manage on their own. Either than or make friends with an advisor and bring them coffees or something haha. Nonetheless another super informative video man great job. And on the 18+ brakes it’s cause their “race brakes” which is applicable but I’m still not about to spend around 2 grand on a cake break job that probably only grants 1.5hours of book labor time. Big pass on that one
Dealer does most of the maintenance on my WRX but that's also because I can't do any of it except oil change and air filters. They also do inspections every PM and tell me if anything is wrong. I'm not mechanically inclined at all so I can't really tell if anything is wrong.

After I got my new 2020 WRX I started to look around for shops to do the oil changes. Just the oil and filter change. I was shocked at what I found for full synth changes. They made the dealerships look affordable! I continued my search and found on Amazon the correct, factory oil filters and crush washers in a 3 pack for $28.65. A 5qt jug of full synth oil can be had (on sale) for as low as $28-$35 depending on the brand. And the best part of this is the FA20 engine itself. The oil filter is right there under the hood, on top of the engine! Making oil changes in the newer WRXs super simple. And then you just take the used oil back to the store you bought it from and recycle it at no charge. Yeah there are a couple extra steps, but I'd rather do this then have the monkies at the local service places not fully tighten down the drain plug and have the car leak out a good amount of oil on my garage floor. (yeah, that did happen to my 2011 3.6R Legacy, which BTW, took some 7.1qts of the slippery stuff. The engine was fine in the end, but even still)
So I now do the oil changes on my WRX. $$$$$$$$$$ :)
The energy just comes to me 😅 it's crazy the lack of attention that some shops have like the example with your legacy. That's another benefit of the DIY option. If you know what you are doing then you know it's done right. 🔥

You could bring the car to a shop and still save a ton by not going to the dealership😂 and youre not even adding in anything like any shocks/struts, ball joints, tierods, tires, tire rotation or a battery. I never brought a car to a dealership unless it was warranty work😂
Exactly! Third party shops are also a great idea, I just wanted to convey the savings between DIY and Dealer cost. And exactly all of the misslanous issues were not factored in only the service schedule maintenance

This is good information, for me I don’t think it would work out that cheap though, I would have to buy decent tools and spend my time, which is why I dealer service my current cars. However this is really good information and I’m considering buying and STI.
Basic hand tools will get you 90% of the way with maintenance on these cars and they're not too bad to service, nothing wrong with utilizing the dealer though 😁
130k miles is like what... 8 years of free spirit driving? which converts $9,000/$3,000 on dealer/DIY into $1,100/$400 per year :) so if you choose to go DIY then you can spend $700 on mods a year. sounds like every single christmas/new year holiday will be loaded with happiness :D

@@Smeedia Business 101, pay yourself first. No one works for free. You spend your time doing it, time = money. I can earn 2Xs more/hour than I would pay for an oil change. If I go to work for 1 hour and pay the dealer, I still make $60 bucks. If I don't go to work for an hour but instead do the oil change, then I am losing -$60. Then I need to go to work for at least 30 minutes to get my money back.

I plan on keeping my WRX past 132k miles. I drive 100 miles a day to and from work. If I don't like the new STI I will buy the 2021 STI. Man keep up the good videos. I'm catching up. The only mods I put on the WRX are OEM foglights, a Vortex Generator, and a STI shift knob because I saw the 2021 wrx with one in the show room @the dealer ship with one. It Actually feels better than the OEm shift knob.
Next are Rally Armour Mudflaps for my birthday in July and me and Ocean Blue will still keep on keeping on brother

How u save money when my pads for my series white cost 503. Thats from the dealer. And its so new they don't have aftermarket parts for yet. So. Its 1500 bucks for pads and rotors job. Sad
Your series white has the same pad/rotor set up as all 2018+ STIs

The OEM oil alone is sold for $106 at my Subaru dealership here in Australia, plus labour this is very expensive.

@@Smeedia Yeah it's crazy. I'm talking about the BRZ though. 0W-20 6ltr for $106. I just buy their oil filters which are $18 each and I use Castrol Edge 5w-30.
Hey bro, I have a 2015 STi that has 220,000kms, I’ve been using 5w30 and 5w40 but am wondering if I should go to a thicker oil being high mileage? Maybe a 10w30? I don’t want to do it unless I know it’s safe to do.
Do you live in a hot or cold climate snd what type of driving arr you doing
@@Smeedia I live in West Australia so it’s pretty hot here summer is average 30-40 degrees Celsius
And I drive it nicely until fully warmed up, I don’t put WOT on low revs, I ease into boost before sending it but I do send it a bit most drives, just not the whole drive, and certainly not in the first ten minutes of driving.

What's the average life.. is it really a 100,000k mile car. I'm getting a wrx or a wrangler. It's way to hard to decide...I love off roading in my truck and a jeep is a lifestyle I love but the wrx is my childhood dream.
I've seen stock block STIs with over 400,000 miles on them. It really comes down to how hard you drive the car and staying ontop of maintance 🙏

Hey man wjats the average lifespan of a wrx? U seem to have been through a good many of them(because they are baddass). The internet is very disappointing saying around 100-180kmiles
Depends on how well they're maintained, my first one had over 400K on the clock stock engine and trans. 🙏
