We love ours. A couple of tips: Cutting on an old aluminum yardstick reduces or eliminates burning, which is a small issue with the foot attachment. A router speed controller makes adjusting the temperature easy for different materials and speeds. We also use one on our plain motor SailRite LSZ1 to make it a bit easier for slow work. (A Worker-B is on the Christmas list).
The yardstick trick is great but you might find that the hotknife blade doesn't slide smoothly against the metal which is why we created the Tempered Cutting Glass. It is the best of both worlds, no excess burning, it is wider than a yardstick and the hotknife blade glides smoothly along it. We've not tried the router speed controller, that is a very interesting idea! We'll play around with it. The WorkerB is a must, while slowing the speed of the standard motor on the Ultrafeed will help, it still lacks the power it needs to smoothly punch through thick or dense materials. You will absolutely LOVE the WorkerB!
I love my hot knife. It's great for fabric and also *ear muffs Sailrite* great for cutting holes in plastic. Just make sure you have a mask on & fan diverting the stinky fumes.
It is not made to be used on those types of fabrics. It works on fabrics like acrylic, nylon, and polyester. Synthetic fabrics melt, while natural ones like cotton burn up. The hot knife essentially melts away a straight line to cut through the fabric. While it does that, it seals the edges from fraying.

Ear Muffs, that is an interesting use!
I heard you say it can cut synthetic fabric. What about cotton, satin, silk, or linen?
