In amps with multiple pre-amp stages, changing the first pre-amp tube in the circuit (usually V1 & typically found in the far right position as viewed from the back) will have the most effect on the sound. Consult an amp tech and your amp's schematic & layout for the correct pre-amp tube location confirmation.

Got inspired by your really helpful and informative demo. Got hold of a JAN Philips 12at7 tube, and a JJ EL84, and it’s absolutely transformed the amp. The complete change to the eq of the tone stack is incredible. Many thanks 👍

John did you do this on the Infinium model of the V5? Did you leave the change in. What are your thougts a year later?
Less gain?! But why
I’ve always liked the sound I’ve gotten with a AY7 or if I need more drop in gain a AU7. 12AU7s are much cheaper NOS that the AT7, AY7 or AX7 too. I’ve found new old stock AU7s for about the same price as a new JJ.
It is amazing how the tone changes with different preamp tubes that you mentioned . Wish I knew that when I was playing out...oh, better late than never. Thanks for your comments and input.

Bias adjustment? Brand make any difference?
BRAND, IMO, makes a big difference. I don't mess with the OUTPUT Tubes or their settings. Each amp is different, so talk with a qualified amp tech about your particular, situation, and desired outcomes. Thanks for your comments & questions.
