- Do you like Mount or Side Control Better in BJJ?
This is the question I got from Shay who feels better from Cross Side / Side Control or whatever you call it. But he wants to be better from Mount.
In this video I start by sharing how I prefer and preferred Side Control in BJJ as it was very natural for me coming from Wrestling.
After that I share 2 of my favorite tips for building a stronger Mount in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
Both of these tips have made my Mount position better for Brazilian Jiujitsu and have also helped a number of my students.
In both tips if you pay attention you'll notice that I'm dealing with the Bridge. Which is the primary means for most people to knock me off balance.
By taking away the bridge or by adjusting to it. I can make sure take away one of their best ways to off balance me and leaves me able to finish my attack on them.
I hope this video helps with your Mount position in BJJ.

If you’d ever like to train with the team and I. Check out my gym Derby City MMA in Louisville,KY.
Knowing when to be tight and loosen up has been a major flaw in my mount game. This was really helpful!
Happy to hear it! Thanks for the comment.
That smartphone always gets some serious mistreatment
Pro tip on the forearm under the crown of the head. Thanks for the tips. My top mount sucks.
Thanks for your videos Chewy! One week old white belt here who really appreciates them.
Chewy you're the man!
Since recently started bjj and my partner kept escaping my mount by bridging. These are great tips!
Thanks! i used that arm under head trick on the last class and it worked!!! i always try to apply the things you share, thanks brother!
thanks for the tips! awesome as always!
Excellent videos. I truly appreciate the work you guys are doing over there. It's been so helpful for my game. Keep up the great work fellas.
This was an awesome video that’s properly helped me!
i like the comedy aspect of your and Chads Videos. thumbs up! and btw your new haircut fits u ... Looks smart, almost like me :)
Great video, just starting to get a feel for mount and when to disengage slightly like you were saying. It's great to go from mount to the back when they present the side to you. I will also go from mount and get off near their head pick them up and get into back control. I only can do this with smaller partners but it is fun. I'm going to go with my dad one day to Kentucky when he's their for work and go train with you guys. You have helped me in so many ways dude.
this is epic thankyou so much !!!
Great 👍🏼 Guidance - thanks 🙏!!!!
Awesome workout videos
I should have sent this because it's EXACTLY what I'm going through.
Nice moves 🖒👍thank you
I like knee on belly the best. I just feel like it allows me the best movement abilities... But definitely some great basic tips for maintaining and developing a good mount game.
Great video, also so this is the legend chad
Hi Chewy,
I am a white belt with about 6 weeks of training under my belt. I just recently competed to see what the experience was like, i lost by points on both fights. I enjoyed the experience but I am feeling really discouraged about my Weight. I am constantly getting flipped. I weigh 90lbs and compete in the 119 and under category. Do you have any tips for the lighter competitor? I watch your videos every day and they are very very helpful! I was able to use your video on a baseball choke when rolling at practice!Thank you!
Awesome video, had to sub, great material on your channel
Happy to have you aboard! Thanks for the comment.
I definitely need to work on that transition to modified mount to get it sharper again, I've been using the mount position you showed for a while and I've started to be a little too set on holding that, it's cost me getting swept a few times when I shouldn't have.
Steve MacInnis I've been doing gift wraps from the start, my first instructor was big on it :)
I should try this if I ever get mount; I'm also a side control to Americana kind of guy (white belt currently). And what do you know, I actually randomly stumbled upon that other video about mounts and bridges earlier today.
Splendid
Dayummmm
4:35 Chad's cheese grin cracked me up. Lol.
Chewy your forearms are monster 👌🏾
Your beard be lookin mighty fine, Chewy
Thanks Gio. Appreciate the comment brother.
One drill that has helped me retain mount is going to s mount when they bridge
Matthew Van Helden strongly agreed!!!!!!!!
Great tips. I will definitely try it as my mount is my weakest point in my game. It looks like I kept everything too tight. Thanks 🤙
Great vid Chewy! Got a question for ya though. I've been training for about 3 months now and I keep getting caught in the north south position and not being able to get out. Any advice? As well as advice on a small 184 lb girl like myself rolling with an almost 300 lb guy that likes to smother.
and now show us how to escape back controll as a back player pls ;)
What's up chewy, quick question. What are your go to exercises to strengthen your closed guard. I'm a new white belt and my legs get fatigued quickly. Opponents pass my guard with ease. Thanks for the response!
Chewjitsu is always looking to come on your back
Jesus saves. Love you guys.
For me i really don't know what submission I'm going to do.My game is reaction.i capitalize on your mistakes.example i will fully mount in order to get your opponent to bridge,so i can react. To me bjj should be simple!!!

Hey I have a question I’m going to be a 15 year old in an adults class I’m kind of nervous do you have any advice?
Alpha Business My daughter is12 and in the adult classes.Take your time rolling go slow.,learn from your more experienced belts.Don't challenge them, your young embrace the experience!!!!!!
Most people will just match your intensity, so if you're worried about getting hurt, dont go full strength. Remeber there's no expectations, you're rolling with grown adults. Have fun and try stuff. I love rolling with the teenagers i have a loy of fun trying to be gentle and using pure technique.
Dont roll with the ducks in the class, if there are any.
Matthew Van Helden roll with everybody even the ducks can teach you something!!!!!!
J Star umm what are ducks lol 🦆 😂 I feel so new and experienced
Alpha Business that was supposed to say dicks lol dont roll with the guys that 100% intensity no matter what and need a win to go home happy.
first, CHEWWYYY
Chewy if I place at naga in September in Cali will u shave your beard? Lol
No. But you can grow one. :)
Chewjitsu lol worth a shot, I have a beard, not as full as yours, but I have one lol
Not first.
Yay chewy hey I’m a young 13 yr old bjj practitioner that’s competing at the junior worlds in England if I get gold pls can I have a shoutout
My heart stopped when you threw your phone
Haha everyone says that. I've got a good case and it's just a phone.
Chewjitsu lol I respect that
Chewy any tips on how to feel more comfortable and confident with gyno?
I really like that transition from mount to back mount as they turn. I’m only 2 months in and it seems like whenever I actually get to mount i immediately lose it from aggressive bridging. I did finally get my first submission yesterday though, the plain Jane arm bar from mount :)
Plain Jane armbar is always a good sub from white to black belt.
I will definitely try that out. Thanks!
It’s crazy how strong your fingers are when you’re walking up the arm.
Brand new white belt here!!! This channel has helped me a ton!!! Thanks a lot brother keep up the strong work!!!
I personally don't like being in full mount position, I prefer side mount and back mount as well. The only time I get full mount is if I'm either tired or lazy and I either hook my Grape Vines or get into Riding The Bull to remain on top depending on what submission I'm aiming for. If I'm going for like a Kimura or an Ezekiel Choke or maybe a four arm choke, ima use my Grape Vines. But if I plan to use a Triangle, Omoplata, Chicken Wing submission, Double Wrist Lock, Gogo Plata (Very rare, I only do this on beginners) then I like the Riding the Bull submission. I do get armbars alot from North South and Knee On Belly, but full mount is tough unless u have a beginner for an opponent.
Steve MacInnis Ya I rarely get an armbar from full mount. I've forced it before, but man I give up alot of my own defense for that and it's just not worth it. Even if my opponent is really weak, it just takes too much time and effort to pull it off. 🤣
