One of the incredible 1950's radioactive BUG films with a pro cast, good story, well photographed and top physical special effects (for the day) very few films with bigger budgets fall short of this film !!
In the early 90s I was visiting a friend who was a retired Air Force Colonel and he'd mentioned he had never seen this movie. I brought along a copy and he was thoroughly enjoying seeing all the old military hardware. When they got to the part about the Los Angeles concrete tunnels he said something that still makes me laugh today: "Well, looks like they're going to have to call up some of that Camp Pendleton ant food!" Sure enough in the next few scenes here came the Marines :)
Well casted and no doubt considered a classic sci-fi. I doubt a new film with todays over doing all special effects would do as well. I thought Peter Jackson was going to do King Kong Justice in his remake but seriously overdid it !! Old school is definitely hard to overcome because it’s rarely overdone.
Imagine a remake where the critters moved as fast in relation to their size as real ants do. And have just as many running around. With decent CGI and a credible script, *that* would be a scary film.
Giant insect movies? I'd pick Mimic and Starship Troopers. Of course there's also Seth Brundle's transformation into Brundlefly at the end of The Fly. BTW: Van Morrison's band Them was named after this movie.
Of all the things I learned over the years that tarnished the films I loved from my childhood, I think I hate the Square/Cube Law the most... Along with the warships in War of the Worlds, the ants in this movie have one of the most defining sound effects of my childhood.
Great movie with impressive attention to detail which makes it all the more believable. For the record, the ants were desert ants, not carpenter ants... and this desert variety is quite aggressive and can deliver a bite!
What I liked about Them! was that the ants were mortal. One didn't need some kind of super-duper XYZ atomic neutron gamma ray gun to kill 'em. Burn, gas or put enough lead in them and they go down.
Phase IV is an incredible sci fi insect movie, mainly because they never mutate to be larger. They adapt to work together coordinating against anything that preys on them.
THEM! is terrific. My favorite giant bug movie is TARANTULA! (1955) with elements of horror and a spectacular title beast! Thanks for all the background info for THEM!
It is truly a shame that the 3D aspect of this movie was dropped. With the growing use of digital viewing glasses, 3D is/has made a comeback. I collect 3D movies and know many others who also love them. This movie would have had a second life.
From one Geek to another, great video, Geek! As a preteen one of my favorite Saturday morning movies, I even made a two foot Ant out of cardboard and put in my little sisters closet to freak her out! She was so easy... such a shame the 3D film never got made!
Like I said before, Michael Giacchino will make his directorial debut with a remake of this movie.
That sounds exciting-this is without doubt,on of my favorite 1950s monster movies.
BEST giant insect movie ever! Thank you for another brilliant vid!
Always my favorite giant insect movie.
Earth vs the flying saucers is my favorite 50s movie 🛸

Not just "one of," the first to use giant mutant insects as the monsters. Its financial and critical success spawned all the would-be imitators.
@danieldickson8591 Absolutely great reply Daniel 100% !!!! Universal's praying Mantis a few years later was a good one as well !

I've always felt James Cameron's ALIENS is a spiritual remake of THEM!

Movies ( def)
A Medium because it's neither rare nor well done 😂
Peter Jackson repeated many beats from the original King Kong, but you could tell he was trying to outdo them.
@@danieldickson8591 Absolutely, if he’d retold the same story with the improved special effects he’d have been so much
more successful.

ED-209: [menacingly] Please put down your weapon. You have twenty seconds to comply.
Dick Jones: I think you'd better do what he says, Mr. Kinney.
😊
Mimic was great.
Good to know.
I was obsessed with the giant spider movie, Turantula. Sleepless for days after, lol.
Saw this when I was eight years old. Scared the bejesus out of me@
I love this movie.
Scifi classic saw this movie on cbs I was 7 in 1991😊

At the risk of nitpicking,it should be noted that tarantulas and scorpions are arachnids, not insects.
This is one of my absolute favorite movies of all time 🤘

Great, here’s a like and a follow
I love your content! Thank you so much. I appreciate your hard work.
100% the best in its genre
Them is definitely a classic. Sales of Raid tripled after it's release.
Finally something good to watch
You were mostly right about the Titan book, btw. The similarities to the Titanic have been exaggerated, but the book did actually exist.

Good point.
I love everything about this Channel! Thanks for brightening my day
I watched this thriller back in 1954, and I was just terrified.
3 CGI Remakes I'd pay to see if they stayed on script and not add extraneous bullshit
THEM
FANTASTIC VOYAGE
FORBIDDEN PLANET
THEM! is terrific. My favorite giant bug movie is TARANTULA! (1955) with elements of horror and a spectacular title beast! Thanks for all the background info for THEM!
One of my top Sci Fi MONSTER movies ever!!!
My wife gets the chills everytime the little girl screams "THEM"
I wonder how the Japanese feel about atomic radiation giving living things super powers.
I remember watching this on Shock Theater Saturday night a 11:30 pm. So much fun. Thanks for thememories. 👍
For some reason... 'The Monster That Challenged the World' always stayed with me!
I saw this movie in a theater in 1954 when I was 11 years old. I paid 25cents-LOL!

Them is a good one. It probably is the best of the giant bug genre. The comic relief with the alcoholic before things get serious again makes sense.
better than Independence Day (the movie)
Favorite Black and White Movie.
I first saw it at 5 or 6 years old
Them! is definitely the best of the giant insect movies.
Great Movie, I Wonder Why Hollywood Never Did One About Cock Roaches.
They did
