Hello everyone and welcome back to Brink of Speed! Today I will be showing you how to drive your 8 speed automatic Corvette Z06 just like a 7-speed manual! I really hope this helps anyone out there who hasn't tried to learn the paddle shifters in their Corvette! This will totally make all of your drives even more fun than they already were! Have a wonderful rest of your week and I'll see you out on the road!
I just bought a 2014 C7 3LT Z51 6 speed automatic. Will it work the same way as your video shows? Just don't want to hurt it. Also other videos show it disabled the AFM and that's a good thing. Lastly, can I use the cruise control in manual mode and still keep the AFM off? Thanks!
You did a much better job of explaining & demonstrating how to perform paddle shifting than anyone I’ve seen thus far.I recently purchased my C7 and learned best from you.GREAT JOB & THANKS
New Vette owner here with a 2019 GS. I thought my trans was fucked but I guess they shift slowly in M when you driving slowly. As soon as I started getting on in Track mode it was shifting fast.
I realize this is a fairly old video, but I watched it because I just got a 2018 ZO6 A8. I came from a manual C5. I immediately started driving in manual only mode, but I tend to over rev in a race situation and hit the rev limiter, which obviously slows you down. I’ve since learned to use the shift lights on the HUD in Track mode. My over rev caused a reasonably tight race against a Challenger Hellcat, we ran again and I just put it in drive. Different story. I was able to put a good gap on him in Auto. Since learning how to use the HUD, it’s better.
I have had manuals for over 30 years but now I have 2011 c6 with the A6 and I absolutely love it. Like you said when you are on it the shifts are lightning fast. I love the paddles.
I drive my c6 corvette A6 with paddles the same way. At cruising I even let off the gas when I shift then press gas after its shifted and you can't tell the difference from a manual or auto from the outside. When I'm racing I just hold peddle down when I shift but can still hold my RPM'S just like a manual to get the most out of the power ban.
I luv my auto, people always want to hate on autos but like you explain the auto will far out perform a manual if you just know how to use it,, keep up the good work !!!!
Morning Mike, Great talking with you this week and enjoying being home driving my ZO6! Informative video on manual paddle shifting and 8 speed auto transmission. I learned that holding the paddle shifter in momentarily will allow the computer to downshift you to the maximum speed/RPM, awesome! Heading to the "Pavs" this eve in Scottsdale to check out all the awesome rides! Blue skies, Jg
You can paddle shift the C7 while in automatic mode. If you look down after paddle shifting it will show as manual but will switch back auto after a few seconds. This will confuse you the first few times you notice this. If you run the streets in sport or track your at a higher risk of bending a rim if you hit a chuck hole (Ron Fellows School). If you run a closed track you should use the paddle shift (Ron Fellows School).
Another great way of shifting the A8 is utilizing the performance shift mode. To activate simply drive in sport or track mode. Blip the throttle quickly at least 3/4 throttle. The car will enter into performance shift mode and downshift to the optimal power band for acceleration and will hold that gear for quite some time. Perfect for roll racing. Enjoy
Hey! Thanks for showing us the way you can hold the paddles back! Didn't know that. My 2019 Z06/Z07 goes into a local speed shop in two weeks for intake, TB, ported blower, 15% lower, ARH 2" headers, 100octane tune, trans and engine tune - same other little stuff. Can't wait for weather to break in Chicagoland.
You're very welcome, I'm happy I could help you learn something new about your amazing new Z06! That car is already a beast but when you get it back from the shop it's going to be a beast on steroids!
Thanks. I have to admit I’ve had a 2017 grand sport for two years and didn’t know it would downshift from 8th to 2nd if you held down! I’ll be out tomorrow- it’s finally dry here in NC!
Key FOB went through the washing machine in my pants pocket. I didn't realize it until car alarm started going off. 2016 Z06 convertible. FOB worked initially then quit. Tried to dry out the internals with a hair dryer, did not work. Convertible top kept coming down on its own. Horn kept honking three times. Disconnected battery and ordered new FOB. Very expensive mistake. Just me complaining. Thanks for the vid!
Yet another nice and informative video, I had no idea that it would shift down by it self like that. You always seem to be really enjoying your C7 that makes it even better to enjoy the video..Keep up the great work...
Juan Cardec Thank you Juan and I’m super happy that you learned something new from this video! I really do enjoy driving my car for sure and I’ll keep the content coming! 😊
Another great Vlog Mike!! Also, even in full automatic, you can use the paddles to go into full manual mode without moving the gear shifter! As soon as you maintain a low rpm speed it'll go back to full automatic mode! But, I know you knew that lol! General Lee Out!
General Lee Thank you, General! Yes sir, I did know that, however if you want full manual control and not have to worry about it going back into auto mode, you have to put it in M. I sometimes use the paddles in full auto but not very often.
That's not sad!! It's great that our big muscle cars have finally caught up to the Europeans. Most people that crap talk the Modern Autos, or single/double-clutch transmissions have never driven one. I recently drove a 2017 BMW M4 tuned up to around 500HP/520TQ and the DCT was so bloody violent it felt like you were getting punched in the back every shift, the tires were kicking out in 2-3rd upshifts. It was WILD. I'd love to drive a modified C8 with the DCT.
Can you do one on using the paddle shifters when it's in drive instead of manual too? I assume it's pretty much the same but are there any other useful things to know in terms of differences in that setting? Is there a way to shift with the paddles to neutral to rev it?
@@BrinkofSpeed Thanks. Just pure, honest explanations, reviews, information, etc. is what we want. And, you deliver. I have a simple Stingray Z51 3LT but, a lot of your info transfers over to mine. It works well for me. Thanks, again. Keep 'em comin'.

BOS I have a friend that just bought a 19 Zr1 A8, Can you go in on both paddles to rev the engine while driving up to a car show like everyone do or is that feature strictly for the c8 Auto?
@jai yen yen Consider manuals put down more power on a dyno, run faster lap times on all circuits and don't suffer from severe overheating issues - I'd say maybe you need to practice driving the manual? Every review points it out too. The delay between the paddle and the gear change is horrific. I've driven a CTS-V with the same transmission and I track my Z06 so the automatic was out of the question.
@jai yen yen Of course but this car wasn't designed for drag racing. YSame car, equal driver, the M7 wins on a track and doesn't go limp after 5 laps. You should see how miserably European and Japanese cars compete against your Grand Sport on the track (love the GS btw). That's why the whole car is a complex system of radiators and coolers located in every part of the body - not so it can deal with the heat of a 1/4 mile run but so it can deal with the heat of racing. In this day and age you've got to be mid-engined or AWD to have traction races on street cars.
@jai yen yen Definitely - auto will always beat human reaction. Are you on the waiting list for the C8 Z06? That dual clutch is AMAZING. You should do a track day so you understand just how legendary your GS is.
does yours "lag" or take a little bit longer to shift from 2nd to 3rd versus the time to shift from any of the other gears? I am having a very large delay and almost whiplash effect at times when going only from 2nd to 3rd. Dealer says the lengthened delay is common compared to other gears... I highly doubt this is how the engine was supposed to be built..

I don’t think so , it’s no different than the car trying to go thru all 8 gears in auto mode (and in m , it never goes into v4 cylinder deactivation- which causes huge issues over time )
Ya but it’s still a delay and if you don’t hit the paddle at the right time once it hits the red line it falls on its face. We have talked before I have 18 Z06 and a 08 Z06. But I did drive a hellcat and when you hit the paddle it shifts hard and right then, but I don’t like dodge lol.
Nah! I'll stick to my true manual transmission. I like full control and stepping on the clutch while giving it gas and releasing the clutch at high speeds. No way you can do that on a fake manual transmission. I hate the word paddle shifters!
Doesn't look filthey to me just very dusty to me if there was more dirt on it then yes I would then call it dirty or filthey but if you can still see the car color easy then yes just looks dusty and not filthey but more dirt and not a lot of color the again yes dirty and filthey yes

Probably shortens the lifespan of your transmission. This is what caused the downfall of my tranny in the e46
I don’t think so , it’s no different than the car trying to go thru all 8 gears in auto mode (and in m , it never goes into v4 cylinder deactivation- which causes huge issues over time )
Can you stay in a lower gear until you get to around 4-5k RPM? that way you can hear the engine more. Or is it bad for the engine
The only thing I hate about the automatic is the delay when you shift.
Kevin Z06 Yeah, I hear ya, but it’s not bad at all when you are on the gas hard!
There is also a delay in manual.
Ya in my 08 Z06 which they only can in a stick back then and it has a delay also it’s kinda weird.
This transmission is ok but you really owe it yourselves to try a PDK.

Nah! I'll stick to my true manual transmission. I like full control and stepping on the clutch while giving it gas and releasing the clutch at high speeds. No way you can do that on a fake manual transmission. I hate the word paddle shifters!

lol E???
@@BrinkofSpeed it was a forgotten meme
Such a stereotypical corvette owner lol
Doesn't look filthey to me just very dusty to me if there was more dirt on it then yes I would then call it dirty or filthey but if you can still see the car color easy then yes just looks dusty and not filthey but more dirt and not a lot of color the again yes dirty and filthey yes
Stop. Just stop.
