  • Bonanza - Episode 04 - The Paiute War - In order to escape punishment for mistreating two Paiute women, a trader blames it on Adam Cartwright. The Paiutes seize Adam and make him a hostage as war erupts between the tribe and a local militia.
    The Paiute War
    Director: Paul Landres
    Writer: Gene L. Coon
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
    Release Date: 3 October 1959
Filming Locations: Iverson Ranch - 1 Iverson Lane, Chatsworth, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Storyline:
A trader and his two brothers beat up two American Indians and take their wives. When the Indian men ask the Shoshone leader to rescue their wives from the traders, Adam intervenes to prevent a war against the Indians. Adam rescues the assaulted women, but the Shoshone still go on a killing rampage, leaving the trader for dead. The guilty trader decides to incite the people of Virgina City into believing it is the peaceful Paiute Indians who instigated the killings, gathering a mob to confront the Paiutes. An attempt for Adam Cartwright to parley with the Paiute chief turns sour when the trader disobeys orders and fires the first shot. Adam is captured by the Paiutes. Ben must race against time to find the Shoshone leader before the Calvary reach the Paiutes - and the Paiutes kill Adam. Written by The Chief Geek
    Reviews:
"Jack Warden stirs up a whole hornet's nest of trouble in this Bonanza story. He and his bottom feeding brothers molest some Indian women and when he leaves for a bit their men folk kill the brothers. Warden comes to Virginia City blaming the Paiutes instead of Bannocks and that starts a nasty Indian War which Lorne Greene tries his best to prevent.
He's got a personal reason for stopping this one. Chief Winnemucca of the Paiutes is holding Pernell Roberts as a hostage in the care of his son Michael Forest.
This was a good story about the effects of prejudice on the frontier and how quickly things can get out of hand when hatred is the driving force." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"The thing about Adult Westerns is that things didn't always turn out the way we hoped, and this is one of those episodes. What started out as three bad men at a trading post being mean to a couple Indians turned out to be a huge, blow out between a different Indian group and the citizens of Virginia City.
It's unfortunate how far things went. The one man who started the whole thing really caused a lot of damage. After hurting an Indian and taking the Indian's wife and another wife, Adam rode to the rescue to rescue them. He left the men there, but Wilson rode off. When the Indian Tribe showed up, they murdered the other two men then caused some more damage. The wrong tribe was blamed, thanks to Wilson who was trying to keep himself out of trouble. But he only caused a great big mess!" [...] Written by mitchrmp on IMDb.com

I liked Anthony Caruso too. He played the Indian chiefs a lot. He also played the bad guy in many Gunsmoke shows. I remember him too playing a sheriff and riding with Matt Dillon. I think they should have used Indians for those parts, instead of a white man with better English than some of the Caucasian actors. That's Hollywood.
I would have liked a lot of films better had they been historically accurate unless somehow, they had a problem of some sort. I am certain we never truly learned much of that very interesting time of the old west through movies.

I love old movies but the language used against the Native Americans makes me cringe. I took classes about their literature and the sense of spirituality and interconnectedness is beautiful. I still have a lot to learn but from what I saw. One life isn’t worth more than the other animal or person, and everything returns to the Earth. They value life. The things that settlers did to them are horrendous, massacres of innocents, their children were ripped away from them and forced into colonization, they were robbed of land, rights. They were scared in a lot of their books I read for class of what settlers did. It’s so sad. What makes it worse is that other cultures suffered just as much and they deserved better ❤️

One of the first special 10 Episodes of Bonanza in the 1959-60 season that did loosely follow the history of the great silver strike in 1858-59 that became the Comstock Lode, and the founding of Virginia City. Being a history buff, those first 10 Bonanza Episodes are my all-time favorite episodes of the show. After that, Bonanza stories became more standard Hollywood / TV western.
There are two great books that inspired the show, THE BIG BONANZA (1876) Dan DeQuille and ROUGHING IT (1872) Mark Twain. Both authors had lived in Virginia City during the original glory days of the silver strike, both as newspaper men writing for "The Territorial Enterprise" and living in the genuine 'Wild West' era. The Bonanza Season 1 Episode 5, "Enter Mark Twain" shows the arrival of Twain in 1860 roughly, when Twain actually did not arrive in Nevada Territory until July 1861.

Thomas N, it's history. (History is silly sometimes.) From the National Parks Service website: "On May 7, 1860, an incident at the Williams Station in Carson Valley, Nevada Territory, set off the Pyramid Lake War. An old Paiute man and a younger Paiute woman went to a house owned by J.O. Williams, a white. Four white men in the house tied up the Paiute man and attacked the Paiute woman. The two were eventually set free but the Paiute man returned later with other tribesmen, who forced the four white men who had abused the Paiute woman, into the house. They burned the house with the men in it.
The Pyramid Lake War had begun. The Paiutes claimed a big victory when they defeated U.S. Major William Ormsby's force at Pyramid Lake, but the Indians eventually were defeated."

War war war there has always been wars and battles fought. The first armed conflict recorded occurred in 1479 BC. War goes like this the strong win the weaker less skilled/armed lose, nothing romantic or pretty......but🤷🏾‍♀️.
What I can't understand is if one side dominates the other unless they are willing to slaughter their opponents entirely then they will have to feed and shelter the new people. 2ndly the land how much territory can one person rule and keep track of. 3rdly most people only live 80yrs sooooo what happens when the heir takes over assassinations more wars 🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️ I don't understand this allure of power since it also calls for a lot of responsibility.

I remember when I was a child and very naive and believed everything I saw on tv, shamefully autistic. And the worse of it my selfish parents and family wouldn't take a minute to simply explain what TV sitcoms and moves really were, a storyline played by actors under contract. Not to belittle all the production, and agreements, who played what roles and the writing of each role, and so on.
