As a conservative Republican and major 2nd amendment proponent, I disagree with this prosecution. People are allowed to own guns. He had no criminal record, passed the FBI instant background check. He did not use the weapon in any other crime. This is either politically motivated, or it's just lip service so that they can avoid prosecuting him on the numerous felonies he did commit. This man belongs in jail for tax fraud, wire fraud, failure to register as a foreign agent, bribery, conspiracy, and possibly more. He did not need to be charged with this.
I have a lot of compassion for people with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) AND Alcohol & Other Drug Addictions (AODA) together. Both issues require medical intervention for recovery, but when added together, TBI and AODA most often means a long, hard road ahead. One's judgement is usually already impaired from TBI, so adding AODA is beyond tragic. I think Hunter may be a danger to society especially with a gun, but there are special places for such patients to serve time. I'd like to see him get some medical care along with his sentence, but I doubt much will happen to actually help society (or Hunter) here.
