A tour of Mum’s sewing room. She’s a famous quilter and has lots of tips and a quilter’s challenge

- As you may know, my Mum Googie has been slowed down rather by a nasty broken ankle this summer. But she's slowly getting back on her feet, and her number one job has been to move her sewing room upstairs onto the landing where she can take advantage of the heat from the kitchen during the coming winter months. After twenty five years her sewing room was a big task to move, but we did it, and the process made us focus on what was really important, and a super strategic layout.
Join Googie and I for a tour of her new space, some top tips re fabric and wadding, and the quilter's equivalent of the #30stemchallenge - in this case make a cot quilt, or even a pot holder, from the contents of your sewing room bin.
If you enjoy the tips and tricks Georgie gives you here, or would simply like to support the channel, the link to her Buy Me a Coffee page is Here: www.buymeacoffee.com/COMMONFARM
If you'd like to join Georgie on any of her flower farming, floristry or small business workshops do have a look at the calendar here and book your place: www.commonfarmflowers.com/pag...
If you're booking a place on our workshops the website will ask you to choose a delivery date - any date will do! And if you can't join our sessions live then you are still very welcome to book as we send the recording and notes of the workshop out to everyone afterwards, so you can download the session and refer back to it as and when you need to.

How lovely is this video.
How I miss me mum,
While sewing all me clothes
So loudly would she hum
Sometimes she sang and sewed
She made up half the lyrics,
She belted out "Your Kiss of Fire"
And left me in hysterics.
She cooked with leftovers
She embroidered, tailored and smocked,
She left us all 5 years ago,
Yet I marvel at my luck.
She left me a rich example,
Of humour, bounce and go,
Yet what I thank her most of all,
Is that today, I sew.
Much Love to you and your Mum
Esther from India
oh Esther that's so lovely x
So, I live in Santa Rosa, California, where Charles Schulz (creator of Peanuts - the comic strip with charlie Brown, Snoopy, and Linus) lived; and passed away a few years ago. It took listening to two ladies from the UK to find out about Linus Quilts! Oh my! There is a chapter about 20 miles south of me and they collect donations at ALL my local fabric shops. So glad I watched today! Thanks for sharing.
how brilliant! that's amazing x
"When all that fabric is gone, I'm dead!" You could publish a book of Googie's Words of Wisdom. We would all buy it.
now there's an idea x
Googie needs her own UA-cam channel❤ Love her work!
she does - although she wouldn't do it x
Your mum is a national treasure! I dream of quilting like that. I keep meaning to join my local quilters club (in California). My mum (83 you’d never know it) is in Northumberland, her amazing talent is art, she let it go because she met her boyfriend walking around the village during covid, so now they vacation to warm locales as often as possible, and in between he keeps her busy with his hobby - flipping houses. She even has a pair of overalls! She moved her suitcase next to the front door they travel so much! The main thing our mums share which is so important is to keep busy and engaged, that is the secret sauce!
she is a treasure - sounds as though your mama very impressive too x
Love your mother. I believe there is a knee attachment to put on her machine so she can sew. God bless you and your mother.
ooh I'll tell her x
Isn't she fabulous?! How wonderful to be so industrious and organised (my aim this week!). I laughed out loud at her fabric cupboard - "when that's gone, I'm dead!" I hope that's a while yet.
lol - she's amazing x
Your mum is lovely and I love her sewing area. At the age of 75 I have just started quilting so any tips would be helpful. 😊😊😊
There's a whole clip coming up in a week or so where she makes a patchwork square from scratch x
Hello again from Georgia in the US. Well, I just can't get enough of Googie; she is such a treasure with so many talents. That boy's quilt is beautiful. Thank you and stay well.
thank you Vivian xxx
I broke my ankle 4 years ago! I’m very familiar with he difficulty associated with that disability. Wishing you a speedy recovery. My sister is a quilter and I shall forward this to her. You are amazing, cheers.
thank you x
I absolutely loved this clip and felt I was right there with you. You both have such a great sense of humour.I’d love to sit and enjoy a cup of tea and a good laugh with the two of you😊❤
we are making another quilting clip this morning x
Recently found this channel ! What a marvellous lady for her age love the garden clips love her quilting room her generation were always busy creatively !

Your mum is a treasure! Hope her ankle heals quickly! Her personal energy amazing and lights up the room.
thank you x
Wow, the little bit of carpet anti slip for the presser foot. Brilliant
she's very clever x
This is the first English video I have seen to compliment the Americans. Thank you! Historically, quilts were a necessity in our cold winters and they were made from flour sacks, old worn clothes, and filled with horse hair, chicken and goose feathers, and all sorts of things. I have heard so many stories and seen quilting books with all the layouts and their names. Each block and combination of blocks have a name for a reason. Some were forms of communication for broken families, adoption, the Underground Railroad during slavery, etc. My grandmother made amazing quilts with incredible detail and sold them for years to pay for my grandfather's medical care, funeral expenses, and her own financial needs. She lived quite well. I learned later that she would get upwards of $2,000 in the 1980s for them. I also quilt, but not to the intricate detail of hers. Also, I have made a few of those quilted story books. After years of play, they end up in a hope chest as a treasure since it was made of love and care. I am so happy you participate in the Project Linus. Many of us in the United States have made millions that go all over the world for children. We pin a little note to them - This quilt was made with love and care for you. It will give warmth and comfort. Love.. (Our family name) in (state we live in). I have had people track me down and send the most encouraging notes explaining how they received the quilts and what a difference it made in their day. Our group received one from Haiti during their awful earthquake some years ago. I love your Mum. She is a treasure.
thankyou - and quilting is an amazing art x
It's a bit awkward when you're not used to it, but have your Mum try using her other foot on the pedal. I had a bad fall almost a year ago and broke my left humerus (plate in it now) and shattered my right knee cap. I spent six months in an ankle to thigh brace so no hope of using the foot pedal with my right foot at all. I got frustrated not being able to sew and finally tried using my left foot. While it was a bit difficult at first I did manage to do some sewing that way but I was really happy when the leg brace was taken off. My machine (a Janome which I would never buy again!) does have the feature where you can manually start and stop but I've never used that and think it would have been more awkward than using my left foot.
Log cabin is one of my favorite blocks but you know they are supposed to have a red center for the heart(h) of the home.
I'm a 77 year old English transplant living in Texas who took up quilting about 8 years ago. I have a cabinet full of Civil War reproduction fabrics that I'll have to work really hard to use up by the time I go toes up! So much fabric; so little time.
lovely - I never knew about the red centre for the log cabin quilt squares x
Her carpet story was funny. Well everything she said was funny. "I'm in charge of foster children."
lol - she's a great lady x
Mum’s sewing room is very nice!
I want to work at her place and sometimes look out the beautiful window.
she's made a beautiful garden x
Well, I'm so glad I came across Googie via Georgie's channel. What a character she is. My mum is a quilter aged 92 and she has a fabric stash to match. I love Googie's comment that when the fabric is gone, she's dead!! Great tip about the black wadding as well, many thanks.
my pleasure x
She is adorable! I miss my grandmother so.
thank you x
My grandmothers sewed quilts by hand mostly ❤❤❤❤😊😊😊❤❤❤ love you girls

Ah thank you x
I’m going to tip out my basket and see what I was going to throw away 🙈😄. What a beautiful sewing room.
go for it x
Your mum is very cool. I'm a Canadian quilter *and* I do dollhouse stuff too! I'm only 45, but I already fear my fabric stash will outlive me. Lately I've been experimenting with adding quilted panels to clothing I make, which is a great way to use up little bits as well.
that sounds fab x
Just found your channel, great videos, your Mum is what this country use to be made of… strong lady..😊
Thanks so much x

Your mom is so adorable, wish her fast recovery on her foot

Your mom is the cutest lady ever, so adorable
Beautiful garden to look at. Between sewing and the garden, it must be very calming.
It really is! x
Love the non slip mat under the pedal!! Yes, mine are always slipping away. Never where I left them!! Also love the towel rail for fabric strips. As imitation is the highest form of flattery/ compliment😉😘, I will be adopting these ideas for myself and passing the tips on to keep them alive. Thank you so much!! I almost felt like I was visiting with my own Grandmother and Aunt.♥️♥️
how lovely - Mum's loving all the comments here x
Love this new discovery of mine. Thanks to a fan of Kate's at Last Homely House for mentioning it.

Just found you. You and your daughter are delightful. Added you to my list of people to follow. I like to quilt, crochet, embroider, and do regular sewing. Just did a christening dress for a great nice with laces and beading that were on the deceased grandma's wedding dress. Turned out well. I am from Lincoln, Nebraska in the US.
how beautiful! hello Lincoln Nebraska! x
You are so fortunate to have such a delightful mom. I sew and quilt in a bit of our attic. A small space. I love the rack your mom hangs her strips on. Very smart. Keeps them all within sight, neat and very compact. Well done. Best regards to you and your mom
Thankyou x
I'm an American quilter currently working on a couple log cabins lol. Please do a tour of Googies dollhouse! With her permission of course. In addition to growing flowers and quilting, I love miniatures. I have a collection in a tub under the bed and some day I will make another dollhouse. Thanks for sharing your mom's special sewing space!
will add dolls' houses to the list (there are a few!) x
Oh my word!! I love her!
What a charming looking home. And that machine is very nice. with the push button start stop, you can sew even without using the foot. And the speed control can be very helpful. I love Brother Machines.
Thanks for the tips! I'll pass them on x
HELLO from SEATTLE, Washington! LOVE YOUR MUM! 💜
hello Seattle! x
Log Cabin quilt block is one of my favorite blocks! Lucky boy who will be recieving the quilt!
Your mom is absolutely fabulous! The sweet dear lady is totally fab! I have made a couple of quilts and I have many that have been handed down. It's a wonderful thing to hold and sleep under a quilt your grand or great grandmother made. God bless y'all 😊
thank you x
You are such an inspiration for me! I had donated 80 quilts to the Ronald McDonald house Herr in the United States then I had 2 strokes and the first one took the vision in my right eye so sewing is much harder now!
Ow - how fantastic to have given so much x
beautiful lady..lucky to have her.
true x
Your mom might be fond of the Gees Bend quilters. They also used the log cabin pattern (and many times a variation) with scraps from whatever they could find. There is a lovely documentary on PBS about these women.
ooh will see if I can find it for her to watch next time I'm up at her house x
A lovely video about a quilter in the UK. I'm a quilter (for 35 years) in Australia and have so much fabric I shall have to live forever. I use a clothes airer for my fabric strips, especially when doing bargello work.
hello Australia x
Best sewing room video I’ve seen yet. Your mum is an absolute delight! If I die leaving fabric behind, I’ve instructed my kids to donate it to Project Linus. I absolutely love how she wastes nothing. Leftover bits can be a potholder. I use the same foot pedal gripper too. From this quilter in Reno, Nevada, USA, thank you for brightening my day. 😊
hurrah! Thank you x and hello Nevada x
I’m from Reno born & raised , niw in Congress Az- Mom made all my clothes till High school at Earl Wooster high ( I asked for her credit card- high school!!🫶🏻👩🏼💻🌵☕️🧵🪡

Quilt now. Doing the light and dark fabric. But I'm doing 2.5 inches it's taking me 3 days to cut all my strip in the right size so my goal is to make two quilts. And doing the red in the center , I do like the scrape look ,I love ❤️ the scrape look
And I've been a quilter 32 years
Thanks for sharing .

Your mother is inspiring. I started quilting at 15 and after not having a good place to work for quite a while I just got my sewing area set up again. My ankle is also healing from a sprain a few weeks ago but it isn't my sewing foot. Those quilts are beautiful and will be very loved.
enjoy! x
As I watch this all my worries fall away!
ah - that's brilliant x
Your mother is wonderful !
isn't she x
What great fun, I saw fabrics I also have in my stash! - The maroon and dk. blue fans.
all the best quilters x
Our generation of women who are expert gardeners, seamstresses and cooks are a precious treasure! They are delightful matriarchs, our mentors. I hope we heed their wonderfully kind and sustainable ways, we should all be forever inspired by their pragmatic, community focused, honest ethos!

Cute 🥰
thank you x
"When that's gone... I'm dead. Okay? I'm going to die with *no* fabric." Sure, Googie, that's what we all tell ourselves. I plan on cursing my nearest and dearest with my fabric collection when I'm gone, if only to perpetuate the guilt and suffering it has caused me.
Lol! X
Just found your channel! I think you'd love a Janome sewing machine! They are awesome. Nicest machines ever.
ooh I'll tell Mum x
I agree Tinker Bell

Yeah❣️ A Googie video❣️. As an American 🇺🇸 just want to say my favourite quilter is Michele Clarke who lives in the Hertfordshire village of Weston (near Hitchin). I met her when my husband and I lived there for 2&1/2 years during the mid 90’s.
PS. Yes, I have made one quilt ( which my daughter has). It was the Log Cabin Heart which grew to be Queen size. Lol
how beautiful! x
