12:02 My natural move would be G3 and according to the database, that would give me a 33% chance of winning. I think that would be a bit optimistic because I only ever play against chess engines. So if I ever get to a 33% win rate I'd be a genius.

“Knightmare” was best ever play on words I’ve heard my entire life.
    Provided great instructional video here.
I play often this gambit. I was advised years ago I shouldn’t spend time - as a beginner - with the King’s Gambit; however, I play beginners and I have, say, won 80% of my games with this opening and I’ve played it often enough that I wear out “stronger” opponents because, as you demonstrated, I’ve developed the center of my board while by definition of gambit accepted their board is scattered to edge.
I’m a say 1375 player and I defeated twice a say 1600 player a few July 4th weekends ago. I was the buzz of the gathering after - before a growing audience - I won the twice with this opening.and once trading pieces to clear an excruciatingly closed board and promoting a pawn.
This is indeed my favorite of your videos.

  • @raphaelhudson
    @raphaelhudson 9 місяців тому +2

Trap 2 is interesting because it is a version of the normal trap you get if you go for the Muzio, but yours is in the main line. The Muzio version is
    1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4 3. Nf3 g5 4. Bc4 f6 5. Nxg5 fxg5 6. Qh5+ Ke7 7. Qf7+ Kd6 8. Qd5+ Ke7 9. Qe5# 1-0
I think I've won more games with this trap than any other position. but I've also lost a lot of games going for the knight sac in other kings gambit lines where where opponent has played F3, where it either partly works but does not lead to mate or simply doesn't work. Be warned if you go for the sac and black is 1-2 moves deeper in then you really need to calculate 3-5 moves in front to figure out whether you are losing or winning .

For all those thinking these traps don't work - They absolutely do! Which is why Igor is also telling you the probability of winning based on a database of real games played.
It goes without saying there's also improvisation, not simply memory. They work because you are actually relying on the opponent playing 'sensibly' for a 700-1000 rated player (not like a 2000 rated one).
There are several other traps in various openings that are almost unstoppable for a lower rated player, even GMs fall prey to them.

Thank you for the nice tips, I was looking exactly for this kind of opening as it fits my style of play. My new favorite opening at 1600-1700 level on lichess!
PS: at 8:37, 9. Nd5?? by white is not an "interesting move", it's a big blunder and white is losing completely after 9... Be7, developing and gaining a valuable tempo on the white Queen when black is already a rook up and already has a winning game.

I really appreciate your content, it‘s great. It‘s just super annoying when playing games after watching these videos my opponents quite literally never play the moves required to apply these traps.
Like I do get the position at 0:55 every now and then but no one plays Nd4 here, rather Nf6 which kills any of the initiative for white.

    Trap 3: Checkmate by minor pieces does not work. When 1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4 3. Nf3 g5 4. Nc3 g4 5. Ne5 Qh4+ 6. g3 fxg3 7. Qxg4 g2+ 8. Qxh4 gxh1=Q. 9. Nd5. Now ... Be7 prevents mate because 10. Nxc7+ provides an escape square for black and threatens to take Knight or Queen. But, you need to do: 10. Qh5 threatening Qxf7+ on the next move

    • @raphaelhudson

As you get higher rated more often you will see the falkbeer counter gambit which is just annoying for white, you really need to learn this line well if you want to play the KG as your main weapon . There are a lot of different theories about what is the best defence objectively, Nepo is the leading kings gambit expert and I think he thinks G5 is the best. But that line is good for white in most cases unless you know a huge amount of theory. The harder defence to meet is the Fischer defence which is 3d6 preparing G5. D6 prevents the knight from going forward. Technically white is slightly better in the main computer line but that involves you playing h5 and then knight back to it's starting square and it you play that as a non GM you will probably just lose. I personally go for a Muzio type line instead with nc3 g5 d4 and you let them take your knight. Gives white a fun game .

In trap 3, no one is ever going to play knight a6 and if they play the more regular knight c6, then none of that works at all, as they have both knights covering e6. So this trap will literally never happen in the real world. You said knight move to a6 so fast too, as if you knew it was a blunder that will never be played and you wanted to skip by that quickly.
