    A couple of notes:
I believe when the author mentioned “syrup” she’s referring to the cough syrup epidemic that killed a whole bunch of rappers in Houston around the year 2000. If you Google New York Times+THE POP LIFE; Rap Is Slower Around Houston, you’ll get a link for the article. Or if you subscribe to the newspaper, I think the link is: www.nytimes.com/2000/11/23/arts/the-pop-life-rap-is-slower-around-houston.html
Also, I’m led to believe that if you went to purchase Molly after the year 2000 you probably weren’t getting Molly unless you knew the chemist. And I would worry about the person who knew the chemist. Here’s a link to an article in New York magazine where they bought a whole bunch of Molly, had it tested, and found out it was really just a meth. Here is the link.

A word of caution on anything you read in New York magazine: If you’re reading this magazine in 1970 it was a decent magazine. People like Tom Wolfe wrote for it. Now it’s really just become a PR agency’s dream, and having worked for a PR agency for a while, when I read the articles I can almost hear the pitch meeting. Most of their articles have become advertorial instead of real reporting. So you need to use your critical thinking skills anytime you’re reading something from New York magazine. Eight years ago I called them and canceled my subscription. The articles were just getting too absurd. But I’m passing the link along anyway because I really like to assign supplemental readings.
