How do you find lasting love in today’s world? For documentary-maker and dating app addict Zoe (Lily James), swiping right has only delivered an endless stream of Mr Wrongs, to her eccentric mother Cath’s (Emma Thompson) dismay. For Zoe’s childhood friend and neighbour Kaz (Shazad Latif), the answer is to follow his parents’ example and opt for an arranged (or “assisted”) marriage to a bright and beautiful bride from Pakistan. As Zoe films his hopeful journey from London to Lahore to marry a stranger, chosen by his parents, she begins to wonder if she might have something to learn from a profoundly different approach to finding love.

Till now I was under the impression that Sajal is the lead, because of the way it's being shared on social media. But the story is Lily's and Sajal has just a small role. They're highlighting her presence in the film to attract viewers.
I was one of the extras at the wedding/ mehndi scene in this film.
Sajal Aly has a supporting role.
Sajal is not even known to be able to attract people to the movie.

It’s a rom com escapist b.s. that takes itself too seriously. Not relatable to everyday people in Pakistan or western countries. Movies like my beautiful launderette, east is east, explored these themes much better.

Even though I want the best friends to get together but I feel like we need to see them not be together. I’m tired of this total cliché predictable love stories that make love seem like some fairytale. Can we just show the loving someone at the wrong time narrative. Our tv screens are infused with this ideal that at the end of the day everyone gets a happy ending but do we? Do we really? Let’s show how “Real” life actually gets. How you can lose the person you’ve loved all along to someone else because maybe you were scared or you realized it too late and how you would have to go on with that. Sometimes love isn’t enough! I’m so tired of this unrealistic fairy-tails narrative. Yes entertainment doesn’t have to be depressing but it has to be raw and make us feel something. Im just saying I would love a different twist in this movie that would leave me heartbroken if that is what it calls for it. Anyway my girl Lily James is in it💗 I love her. Can’t wait💃🏻

A diet of rom-coms and romantic fiction as a tween and teen set me up with completely unrealistic expectations of relationships. I expected all my dates to be “the one” and went around with all these completely fictional romantic ideals in my head that led me to gaslighting and low self-esteem. So damaging. I suspect this film actually subverts the tropes, and they don’t end up together. I certainly hope so, anyway.
Cause at the end 2 people will find their way to each other if its meant to be it ll happen. I know from real life such stories of my friends and family and if u want more celebs look at jlo and ben

Like 'Green Card' where Andy McDowell and Gerard Depardieu do realise they love each other but it is too late. It's a great movie.
I just saw this film. It was brilliant. It made you laugh, it made you sad and cry, but it was really an uplifting film. If you are British Asian growing up in the 1970s and 1980s, you can relate to some of the themes in this film.
Beautifully shot scenery, vibrant colours and very humorous dialogue. The characters were so warm and funny and you were rooting for them to have a favourable outcome.

This movie looks amazing! I am not Indian or Pakistani, but I am an Orthodox Jew and my husband and I met like he did, through a matchmaking process. "Assisted marriage," as they call it, or "shiduchim" as we do.
Often times "arranged" or "assisted" marriages are portrayed in films as a punishment or a prison, but I didn't feel like that was the case for me at all and I'm so glad to see a more positive depiction of it in a film like this. I'll definitely be watching it.
It depends.. if it was something arranged from birth then I’d say no.. that’s cruel but matchmaking as an adult where you have the person’s info .. and know their hobbies etc and pick from there.. I’d say that is different

The main characters had such good chemistry, whenever they would get close to eachother, you could just feel it. Definitely recommend.

This was a great watch! Well directed, well acted. The story is not entirely realistic but then it is a rom com, not a documentary 😄 and it makes some great points about marriage, love, social pressures and happiness.
Great to see Sajal making progress by working with international artists... 👍

I actually kind of want the arranged marriage to work out and for Lily’s character to define herself outside of a relationship but we all know how this is going to end, so why bother hoping for anything more profound? 🤦🏼♀️

@@alinac5512 No, that’s forced marriage. An arrange marriage is essentially dating but with none of the bullshit. You can check compatibility and values early on, there is less manipulation and lies, nobody is using the other person just for sex, you can make sure they fit with your lifestyle, friends and family etc etc.
I think they'd be a great decision especially to represent the western and eastern cultures
I had a marriage like this but it didn’t work out. My husband was a doctor in the US and I only met him once briefly & talked on the phone before being married. Didn’t work out coz he & his mom turned out to be narcissists who had love bombed me into agreeing to the marriage but when I got there, the mask came off.
Wow.... Doesn't this movie takes us back to those days when Pakistani and Indian actors use to work together in a movie shot in London back in 1990's.

I feel like I've been waiting to sense real chemistry between two characters in a film for soooo long and honestly the bond between Zoe and Kaz was portrayed so well; the last kiss scene was so realistic, when two people know they want eachother but try dance around it but end up completely spilling their desires, so so good. Loved the line "how does it feel to aim so low and miss?" and made me re-evaluate my dating life in the last 10 years on apps hahhah

I saw this movie at the theatres on 22 March a few days ago...and honestly i loved it! Specially the ending it was sooo good and the last 45 minutes of the movie were the best ones for me . Please watch if you can right away or as soon as it releases online !

He has a white mum and pakistan dad. Mixed race boys with white mothers get less chances than a mixed race boy with a white dad. Like that henry golding was some random radio host in china getting acting roles out of the blue because of white father privilege.
