@@SkillsWithPhil Make it,I would like to see some other ideas,i have got old pair of sneakers, old pedals,so I would like to see some more work, and do it myself too
The original pedals on bicycles for decades were rubber blocks. They were ultra durable, even when cracked and weathered but they were heavy. Most of the problem was not the rubber but instead the manufacturing process which made it economical to simply have huge rubber blocks and steel bearing cases.
Hey! Just a quick disclaimer: This is only a fun little video about an idea I wanted to test. Not saying this is a perfect system. Not saying this would be a replacement for any current systems. There'd be lots of things to work out for a practical version of both, shoes and pedals, that I didn't mention to keep the video short. That's all. Have fun riding and stay safe, everyone. ;)
Concept: pads that can be securely fastened to the bottom of riding shoes, and have studs on both the top and bottom of the pad, so that it will stay secure on the sole and grip the pedal. The pedal could be surfaced with an old riding shoe sole on both sides, as the soles are fairly thin to reduce bulk and allow it to be evenly weighted Similar to this in concept, but the full length of the shoe www.amazon.com/Stackhouse-The-J-Heel/dp/B002BI9HWQ
Yes, YEs, and YES! This is an awesome idea to fix an age old problem! Now, to get someone with and Industrial Design Degree or background to come up with the correct and viable design for for the Shoes and the Pedals... Ride On Man :-)
Fantastic idea for being able to quickly engage and disengage with the pedals without the risk of getting some sliced up shins. Obvious downside is that now the shoes can't really be worn inside anywhere, but this could still be useful for people who are purely riding and not stopping at any establishments.
Sweet idea. Now if only 5.10 and a pedal company team up for a proper light and sticky platform pedal/shoe duo. Pins need to be easily replaceable/removable
As a lifetime addict of most things on two wheels I think you are onto something. I still have the flashbacks of doing this many times when I rode BMX. I think maybe the style of riding shoe would be better suited to something of a mountain bike / road shoe with stiff soles. I like the idea that the nasty part is on the bottom of the shoe and not the pedal
I would 110% buy something like this. Having rode mountain bikes most my life the thing that holds you back is the thought of slipping. I had already sent my pedal into my leg many times and each time comes out with stitches
It would be such a great idea, but it makes the shoes only usable on a bike, I don't really like that. Loved the experiment and the video tho, keep creating good content ;)
What if the pins are attached to a stiff ( where it needs to be to hold them in place and for power transfer) removable insole. Probably not good for walking on a rainy day--would you even ride your bike? Another idea is removable outsoles or sandal like cleats.
You could do it like track shoes. where the spikes can be screwed out with a tool from the outside in about a minute. it is still very solid and then u could wear them as normal shoes.
This is brilliant. I would use it. Extra advantage: pins on shoes have better grip when walking slick trail. We have a lot of freeride trails that you push to the top, wish I had these.
Pretty cool idea. I could see this concept evolving into a set of pegs that fit to the pedals very tightly, or "clip" in but in a way that would still allow you to get out of very easily... perhaps by a minor turn of the ankle or something simple like that. Crazy thoughts, i know. Ah well, off to buy another set of power straps.
I love it and think a well engineered system in this style would be great. And as a bonus you'd have shoes for walking around town when it turns into a sheet of ice!
Great idea! I use clips because my fiveten's soles wear out in no time. If there was something like this in the market, that maybe even allowed to recycle old tires would be amazing.
Also good thing doing it with carpet for barefoot riding is that one strip of carpet wraps around the whole pedal, rather than 2 peices of rubber and doesn't have the thickness issue. If course rubber / carpet are for completely different riding styles though.
tahts a really great idea! i am really terrified of pedal slips and this would be a really good way to get back into bmxing! i’ll probably try it at some point! thanks for the vid!
Ha ha, same thinking here - now own some spiked trainers. Found soft shin-pads under my jeans were better, just enough to stop the nauseating skinning! Keep on innovating, love your videos 👍👍
Thats why i as bmx driver use plastic pedals from odyssey. Best pedals i ever used, they hold since 5 years. The metall ones from crank brothers etc. were broken after a few months.
@@carterlindblom6003 Nah because the tread on that old tyre he used for the pedal is more grippy and has more, larger indents than a shoe has, so it would be far easier to grip on than with the normal pins on the pedal.
Germans and your clever engineering! This would be fantastic I think. Only downside is of course that they're less walkable on concrete, but especially if you're mountainbiking - that doesn't matter much. This will of course also help when you need to push the bike up some wet grassy hill!
the solution for walking around in these shoes would be to make the "spikes" retractable, it wouldn't even need electricity if you copy a ball pen design for example, youd just need a way to fit it in the sole without making it like 7cm thick
I like the idea! I like Tires too. Its spectacular how long a truck tires resist, especially the big ones. Take a nice flat pedal and mount two flat pieces! would be great!
Love the concept. I think it’s great when people think outside the box on how to improve something. Only problem- we wouldn’t be able to instantly identify as mountain bikers by our shins!!! Lol
Just subscribed... Great vid. As someone that received 12 stitches on my shin due to a 4" gash down to the Bone from a pedal strike I'd buy this setup in a heart beat! I'd use a spike system like track running shoes so you could swap lengths and shapes. The pedal is a bit trickier but maybe if you made a pedal that was single decked (instead of double decked) and you could bolt pieces of rubber on top and bottom of the deck of the pedal. That way it's generally the same width and balanced. Or somehow upgrade those old school cruiser bike pedals where the deck of the pedal is rubber and they have threaded rods through the rubber bits. Anything not too have to wear soon pads in the hot summer.
Love the idea. There's definitely some things to be worked out of it but wow man it's a good idea. Shoes are more expensive than the pedals that destroy them. Very forward thinking man 👍👍👍👍👍👍
I used to run aluminum pedals with steel screws through them. It hurt like hell to get shinned by those and my legs are covered in scars from it. I got a pair of plastic ones to hopefully make it better. It was way worse. The dull plastic cuts didn't look as severe but they hurt twice as bad, and I started having problems with my feet slipping. Metal pedals for life.
1 issue I see is knee ligament issues occurring when trying to get off/away from your bike in a crash. Foot lands, body is moving rotating, but foot is firmly planted on the ground and the knee gives out. Like cleats or old AstroTurf.
This is a great idea and I would definitely buy rubber pedals and pinned shoes. I have had many trips to hospital because of deep lacerations in shins knees and calf's. Pedals suck.
Genius idea I think. However they would be much like army drill boots and slip or mark surfaces at home or out and about. Maybe a second pair of shoes would be needed in a back pack, but as far as solving shin scrapes, great idea!!
great Idea...with just a little work i think this could really work. shoes could be make like track spikes to have replaceable spikes and just need a flat mount for the rubber
I use spikeless golf shoes, I’d 1000% recommend you trying it. Some spikeless echo ones would be perfect, they help you stick to the pedals a crazy amount, I can barely ride without mine haha
I can relate to this issue. We ride different bikes for sure, I ride a Brake less BMX, and I have large gaps in my pedals to help shave weight, What I do is get a pair of football shoes, not one with studs, but ones with grips that come out a fair amount, when pedals, stopping, or any tricks it allows me to keep a safe and good grip on the pedal!

I would definitely give them a try. I converted from 15 years of clips to flats this summer to learn better jumping and hoping technique. I'm still bleeding.
I like this idea...just trying to think of problems with it though and concerns I'd have being a mountain biker, I think we've all had that time during a ride where maybe you hit a root or rough patch in the trail or drop and when you come out the other side your footing is slightly off from the ideal position on the pedal but your going into the next section and just ride it out anyways. With these if your foot is off at all itll be rubber on rubber and at that point your foot is likely to slip off the pedal. Maybe a larger area of pins on the shoe, not just the sweet spot would remedy that.. walking around or driving to the riding location would suck with studded soles and would basically require a second pair of shoes just for driving. Good idea though, I'm just trying to be nit picky.
Its à fab idea but the way forward is as follows. 1.Have a rain type slipon overshoe with spikes and with shoelaces or velcro which you can change out of and just run under the tap to clean. 2.The pedal to be a rubber block with a hole drilled in the middle for the spindle. 3.What about magnets instead..that would be interesting project lol.

As a mtber, that would make sense. Also, when commuting and having wet shoes on flats is a formula for shins getting hit. But walking on pins directly out of the sole might wear down the pins very very quickly. Just ride some spike tires on tarmac. You will see what I mean.

What a GREAT idea!!! I hate shinners, but dont want to clip-in either. I'd be all over this!
I think it’s an interesting idea, but I like my riding shoes to work well as normal shoes to walk around in and not damage the floor.
I was thinking of a modular system. sliding in the bike bottom for riding , and sliding in the normal bottom for work / whatever
Peter Lang you could still do that with reg shoes
For MTB it would also solve the problem of walking up muddy inclines. Love it.
That was cool, dude!

I honestly like this thought. Had enough stitches in my shins and would actually give this a go. Not for all my bikes though.
