  • In this video I'll be showing you around in the garden of Roel and Petra, at Montes de Perin, nearby Cartagena, Spain and you will see my art inspired by the wonderful flora here. If you like this video, you might also like • ART JOURNAL Flip Throu...
Stage of sketching & transfer/copy your sketch
I walked around in the plants, many of those weren't that familiar to me. I like to look at plants carefully, how are they built up, what's the basic shape, how does their fruit look? How to draw flowers from different angles? My favorite plants and trees were the 80 year old olive tree, the agave which is almost blossoming, the hibiscus and the cactus with the red flowers. I studied them first in my sketchbook, then I painted them again in my art journal. For the olive tree, I used a copy method with charcoal. If you want to transfer a sketch onto your art journal page, these are the steps you could follow:
fill the back of the sketch paper you want to copy with charcoal.
place the sketch on your art journal place in the area where you want to have it
use tape to make sure it stays in the right place
draw your sketch again with pencil
you can remove the tape on one side to check if you haven't forgotten something
voila, there's your sketch in charcoal! You can draw the lines over again with pencil or just start to paint!
Green and pink page with the olive tree
I worked multiple days on these pages. It was not easy to choose from all the plants I sketched, but in the end these 4 were my favorites.

Lemon tree and how to make limoncello
On the next page I had a challenge with the block triangle shape pattern on the fabric of the right page. Though I love this dessin, I found it difficult to just overlap it... or to keep it simply as it is. Both didn't feel respectful. How could I integrate this to my own work and make something new out of it?
The left page was filled with the wonderful lemon tree that was blossoming and giving fruit at the same time... o and the scent of the flowers... it was delicious! I painted the flowers and the lemon on the page, and kept the colours the same as the colours in the fabric. But next? I had no idea, until Roel asked us if we wanted to join making limoncello.
After a great afternoon, preparing the limoncello (it still had to wait for 2 weeks until it was ready to drink) the idea popped up automatically: why not make a step-by-step plan of how to make limoncello? I also used the label that's on the limoncello bottles.
    Abstract page in rusty colours
Sometimes it's great to keep it easy, neutral colours and just some things to use for a collage... and this rusty colours feel so comfortable to me. Maybe I still want to add something, maybe the 'beans' of the oleander, which have the exact same colour.
    Fig tree
The last page was dedicated to the nice fig tree we had next to our camper. I wanted to paint it with a full moon, as we've seen it last week.

I think your lemon spread is lovely. The quilt like pattern in the upholstery looks pretty cool, how you pulled it all together. My favorite plant? That's a hard one. I garden and love many plants. The birch tree in the yard is lovely. Lilacs are beautiful. Sunflowers also, but these are quite common to draw. Oh, I know. I think Japanese maple would be fun, they are a favorite. God bless 🙂

Thank you so much! It was great to work on the lemon page… and yes, it’s hard to tell which plant is favourite. Thank you for sharing yours!

What an inspiring video again! I am impressed by the beautiful pages with olive tree and hibiscus flowers! I also think the backgrounds of the double page that is not finished yet, are very attractive!
Are these pages all in your self-made journal, or is it a Wakley journal that you have provided with a beautiful cover?
(And: I don't have a favorite plant, because in every season I see new plants that I love to paint 😀
