Can a PC Make PS2 Graphics Great Again?

- The PlayStation 2 is an old system, yet some of the games were quite graphicallly impressive ,at least 15 or so years ago. But how good can you make one of the best looking sixth generation titles look when emulating it on PC, and how will it perform?
Thanks for watching :)
Ah yes, I think I shall emulate the games I already own, and definitely am NOT going to download off of the internet.
i have many original PS2 games, but i downloaded the ISO from the net just in case the DVDs get corrupted or brake, since the games and console are abandonware i dont think its pirating.
Ah yes, you cant charge me for piracy because I said I WASN'T going to pirate PS2 games
Nah, that kills the fun factor, it's much more nostalgic to play the genuine games with a real console. These days I just download ISOs, put them on HDD and play them with my soft-modded PS2.
A lot of the games are probably abandonware at this point. Doubt Acclaim cares if you obtain an ISO of Vexx in less legit ways.
I usually just emulate off the disc. Most ps2 games are pretty cheap
Dude this looks so clean! Please tell us your settings I would love to experience this game with this kind of clarity!
Agree totally, you can't leave us hanging not stating the emulator used...

Ahh the glorious intro.. I can still hear it in my mind.
Original PS1 Sound >>> PS2
(but PS2 still had good start-sound)
Yeah, me too... "Hello everyone and welcome TO another video, now..."

Nice video once again!
Oh crap, this is more than 15 years old. I still vividly remember playing legendary games on this system like San Andreas, Snake Eater, God of War 2, FF12... I feel old now.
All you need is a CRT Trinitron to make PS2 look good 👍
Yes
Agreed, I hope this thing lasts forever. I do not want to go the upscaler route to get my older consoles looking decent. When I got this one and fired it up, I instantly regretted getting rid of my CRT back in 2008.
@Skott Andddd.... you have no idea what the others were talking about because all you thought was the size (that matters). You are so oblivious to the CRT vs modern display differences, and all you could say was how big it was.
@Skott Knowing the differences isn't the same as understanding what those differences meant. And I still stick by you are oblivious of those because that last statement is still wrong. Go search for a video done by DF on running modern game on CRT. And, the reasoning of the first comment is PS2 games already looked good back in those days because it was played and developed on CRT display in mind. Aliasing, motion blur, upscaling blur, input lag etc that later on became a problem on modern display never was a problem when it was played on the intended display.
@Skott Best solution is a multisync pvm or bvm but it is very expensive but can display 240p to 1080i

it's always nice to hear that phrase
@@darkacb8422 i completely agree, it shows that he cares about what we think about his videos' quality
He doesnt't give us a third option. Where we do: **metal voice** nothing!
dislikes are counted as engagement just as much as likes so they still boost a video in youtube's algorithm
negative publicity is still publicity
a lot of these games look already amazing with just the upscaling, shows how good graphics they had even for the time, but were hidden between a small pixel count
Damn. I think I need to emulate GT4, it's one of my favourite all time games
I hope you have a powerful setup, this game is very intense to emulate, especially at higher settings. I ended up just buying a ps2 instead to play it :/
3:37 when you have your trunk full of sand.
Now it starts to make sense!
3:31 the godly fiat panda 1000 fire
Drove a model like that for 7 years, awesome car. I always wished to own that same model with 4x4
The Fiat Panda is the most reliable, beautiful and powerful car ever made. Can easily beat hyper cars and sometimes planes.
@@dodecahedron1 If I recall there was 1.3l petrol engine with turbo. Literal pocket rocket.
Most of car models in Gran Turismo 5 (PS3) are actually from GT4, only a handful were made from scratch for the new game. This tells a lot about the quality of the car models used in GT4. Those graphics were like real life photos when I saw the first screenshots.
One PS2 game that looks absolutely fantastic when you mess around with the settings like this is Auto Modelista
you made my day, the 240 GLT was my absolute all time favourite car.
I got GT concept up and running today prompted by this video, astounding how good it looks and still great fun. Thanks for posting!
I still have my copy also. Even though my PS2 is long gone. This video brought back so many good memories. Thanks!
Thanks for making this video. This inspired me to emulate all my old Xbox games on my PC. SEGA gt 2002 is still super fun to play and splinter cell is great as always. Anyways also emulated some ps3 and played some incredibly cursed GTA 5 lol
in 2029 i can predict integrated gpu's were stronk enough to ran pcsx2 at 60fps
I'm getting a flat 60 fps maxed out with my 3700x and 1060 6gb. Love this game! Awesome video
Metal Gear Solid 2 with texture filtering and at 4K is absolutely mental. It holds up way better than it honestly should and hugely benefits from the fine detail gain.
I was so nostalgic today about GT4 and now that I saw your video about emulating it I will try it lol
When the screen goes crazy like at 2:58 press start, screen settings, put brightness and contrast to zero. You can then adjust the pcsx2 shader to your brightness settings you need. This allows you to run the game in 480p mode, and its SO much nicer without that interlaced blurryness..
Now you have to try grab turismo 5 in 1080P on the PS3 emulator
@Lucas Gawor but not impossible
GT Concept works a lot better on RPCS3, 100% playable. Even upscaled
A while back I tried emulating Midnight Club 3 DUB - 1440p @ 50FPS, it was amazing!
This game was my childhood, I remember my dad and I both playing this game in the living room. Good memories :)
Playing Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2 at 6x resolution is always a blast because that game was my childhood. That plus the 16:9 widescreen mod makes it for a great experience. Phones these days are getting close too, with the current gen snapdragon processors being able to emulate it at about 20-25fps whereas the last gen was about 10-20fps. Still not playable but ever since I was a kid, all I've thought about is being able to play that game on the go.
My dad drove a Volvo 240. That’s a real MAN’S car. He even kept a Yorkie bar in the glove box. What a bloke.
That would of been back when Yorkie bars were good eh. Can't remember the last time I bought one, but I do recall them having less pieces with slightly chunkier pieces, then the chunkier pieces getting flatter.
Massive props for the cars you picked.
Xsara is actually a really nice car to drive.
Bangernomics at its best.

Great video man, totally get your sense of humour. Subscribed
I just started replaying GT% on my PS3. I had GT4 back in the day, I had an absolute TON of PS2 games, but I gave most of them, and both of my PS2's away. I had 2 consoles because one read half the games and the other read the other half lol. I've since started to buy back my old games, I don't know where the ones I gave away are, but I bough a fat console (I originally had 2 slims) and a few games to go with the ones I had left.
absolutely loving all the content you're coming out with, this one of my favorite computer channels on UA-cam.
I've been playing 100s of hours of GT3 lately. Well timed video
Black is also one good looking PS2 game. Other games that matched up, Call of Duty 3, Need for Speed series, God of War etc.
Gran Turismo looked amazing when it first released on the original Playstation. It was a game changer and responsible for all the driving sims that followed since..... yes there were racing games before it but nothing that managed to give you the driving dynamics that GT did.
Mad to think Crysis was released on PC only 2 and bit years after this... shows just how ahead PC gaming was at that point (it's much closer now, obviously!).
Comparing it to the PS2 is unfair since 2005/2006 started the seven generation. You should compare it to a PS3 game.
The smoke and lights passing through cars is something that happens only on emulators.
But, as we know, emulators are useful also to use modern equipment (I'd like to play with a modern wheel at GT4) and to reduce the wear of hardwares that are nearly 20yrs old
it was either gt3 or gt4 that gave u the chance to win the f1 car... when i finally got it i used it to decimate all on endurance races where me and my buddy would do 10 laps each until the race was done... it was a quick easy way to build up a lot of money in the game... i remember getting nitrous for the first time in gt4, damn i played the hell outta that game
I play PS2 Games on PCSX2 a lot. It's really amazing to make PS2 Games HD with a cool widescreen hack.
I know not everyone liked it, but some time ago I emulated/ran DRIV3R and installed some sharpening tool for it and it looked incredible on the PC!
This is cool! I downloaded the emulator a while ago and started GT4 as first game. Got it in a bundle with my original PS2 and really liked how well it worked. Especially with two PS3 controllers connected to my pc!
The PS2 is as indestructible as that Volvo 240 wagon , trust me it went through hell in my childhood , people passing by tripping on the controller's cable was a nightmare , still the game continues working like nthg happened.
I am going to emulate my old games
* looks at new gaming PC
Oh crap I dont have a CD/DVD drive
doodskie999 *iso’s 🙄
Unless you plan on getting the equipment to dump GameBoy, NDS, PSP games and others... there's the other option, you know what.
The Xsara was the model Citroen used in WRC for many year until it was replaced by the C4 hatchback. It's because they are not hydraulic like other Citroens but normal spring setup
Still looks good by today's standards.
I still play this on my PS2, bought another GT4 copy the other day👍👍
Hai very late reply on an old video but I had the same problem with my PS2 not reading the gran turismo 4 cd. The reason is because the the cd was "double layered" so the laser of the cd reader couldn't penetrate all the way and read all the data. The laser lost performance due to aging but you could just had it replaced at a workshop back in the day. My best friends dad explained it to me when it happened and replaced it for me. I was super happy the moment I could play this game again it was amazing!
Emulation is a great thing. I enjoy playing burnout 3 and the mgs series at pc a lot.
Love the ps2, softmodded mine with FreeMcboot now I can play my old games as well as my old ps1 games
I think the ps2 still looks amazing. Imo the problem is our screens. On a crt I have a tough time telling the ps2 is running at a lower res than the xbox or gc. If you have a 16:9 crt, there's a good number of anamorphic widescreen games too. I also play ps2 on my computer with pcsx2 when I don't wanna set anything up. How do you all play?
Same thing happens when you get one of the higher resolution titles for N64 run through either the UltraHDMI mod or emulators, it'll surprise you what they could actually achieve.
The biggest bottleneck they had at the time was the screens and the communication to them, being stuck with analog for the most part you couldn't get the goods through the pipeline properly
Crazy...had no idea. Thanks for the interesting video.
In rallying terms, the citroen xsara was a force to be reckoned with, even the front wheel drive variant was able to claim outright wins against its 4wd competitors in the WRC
If you could change the textures, add some better sounds, put AA, and raising the resolution to 1440p can make this a worthy competitor for new games XD
This is how I remember the game looking back then
this is how we remember our old games looking like
I still have the game and PlayStation 2
How did you make the game look so good? I want to use same methods for other games
If you have a dead laser, you can either replace it (not very expensive) or softmode the console using the new savegame/date exploit and install freemcboot/OPL to boot games off usb
did you notice how the dirt and sand coming from the wheels was overlayed over the citroen body , probably an emulator bug
zone of the enders the 2nd runner, used to play that game so much went through 3 copys was well chuffed to find it remastered on steam a while back
This is my favourite game thank you so much for posting a video on this!
This is how I remembered those games back then
Like UHD 8K resolution back then
Man, you forget how many freaking car brands there are until you play Gran Turismo again
I will always love my ps2 and pcsx2 breathes new life into my games (granted if they run right. I'm looking at you god of war 2)
idk why but few emulators most of the time mess up the particle effects... like how the smoke / dust off of ur Citroen was overlayed on top of the car instead of underlayed
Wow the graphics are amazing. Been a long time since I tried emulators but may have to have a look at them again. I do miss playing GT4
Gran Turismo 4 with 1080i mode looks really good for PS2
Old Gran Turismo contend = always 👍
San Andreas and Scarface are super fun but my adjusted-to-my-1920by1080-laptop eyes can only take so much. I gotta get this game!!
Playing GT4 in HD on PCSX2 is basically the closest we'll ever get to playing the unreleased "Gran Turismo HD Classic" for PS3, except it's even better because there's no micro-transactions.
I'm not joking, that was actually gonna be a thing... GTHD "Classic" was gonna be a side project to the much more well known GTHD "Concept" that was basically gonna be a digital-only HD Remaster of GT4 re-structured it into a free to play title that only gave you one car and one track out the gate, with all the rest having to be purchased separately via micro-transactions... Thankfully, they canceled it in favor of GT5 Prologue.
I really do tonight you were going to try injecting some new tech into it, Ambiente Occlusion, Anti-Aliasing and texture filtering, just think of that.
I just got a suped up desktop rig and NBA Steet Vol. 2, Gran Turismo 4, ATV Offroad Fury 2, I'm looking at you 👀👀👀
Just download your roms. Buying second-hand ps2 titles is not gonna affect the developers anyway.
YES YOU CAN!
Upscaling in the pcsx2 emulator has been around for a while and it's stable most games can be upscaled to a higher resolution or wrapped with new textures and some games like jackass were actually released with hd textures with in the original game THANK YOU TO THE DEVELOPERS OF EMULATORS ITS HARDWORK
My PS2 died a couple of months ago, might have to give this a try!
Did you have the green screen issue with AMD ReLive recordings? That's the issue I have now on my itx RX 480 and had to turn to (resource hungry) OBS.
Also, did you ever play GT4 with a force feedback wheel and pedals? Seriously, see if you can find a cheap used Logitec GT wheel. That was such an amazing experience back then compared to the controller.
You tried to ram a panda and only ended up against the wall... You really should be thankful you're still alive man.
I kept all my ps2 games, like to emulate armored core and zone of the enders 2. AC runs 100% perfect, ZOE2 gets choppy on my GTX 1060. Ps2 emulation is so great.
Nice work here, gt4 was awesome
I hate to say this but I have to dislike this video, due to several reasons :
1. Using DX11 renderer instead of OpenGL with blending mode set at medium to eliminate dust going through the car model
2. Not testing the intensive night tracks which will actually strain the PC properly. George V Paris is the main reason why GT4 is really considered to be really heavy to emulate, due to lighting effects that strain most PCs.
3. (Ignore this if PAL version is used) Not running the game at Progressive mode to make the game output cleaner and smoother image.
damn this is a well written video. cheers!
Ah Miss those Old DualShock PS2 Controllers
PS2 was the Best
Bit confused. You said the emulation is good at upscaling the grpahics and yet said that this is the only game you have to test as you need to go out and get some more...🤔 why didn't you just use the ISO's ?
But these are awesome videos. Hope you will start adding more emulators in your videos... Good idea to start testing the old crap you buy and test them with PS1,PS2,N64 etc.... aswell as normal PC games 😁
Gt3 and Gt4 were like early ps3 games in graphics. Ps2 had the best games
In my humble opinion, Tekken 5 is THE best looking PS2 game. Check out some footage of it being upscaled to 1080p in an emulator - it still holds up! Fighting games & racing games often have the graphical advantage because all of the processing power is focused on the characters (or cars), with little needed for the surroundings.
To be fair, the PS2 has a nice collection of good looking games if you search for them. Add black to the list of insanely detailed games as well (since its destruction physics are off the charts as far as PS2 goes lol).
Does Black on a PS2 emulator look as good as the original Xbox version did? (I mean as in the first Xbox released, not that Black was originally for Xbox)
@@lmcgregoruk It looks okay, some hardware emulation bugs (graphically) were there when I tried it years ago, they might be fixed now. I haven't really bothered. It's also *very* demanding to emulate.
Other then that I always preferred the PS2 version over the Xbox version since the Xbox has weird looking breaking glass effects (big chunks of glass instead of finer pieces raining down). Other then that it looks pretty much identical.
I guess running it on Xbox1 would probably give the best experience right now though. Not sure if you could get that version functioning in windows 10 through the Xbox app thing 🤔.
I actually have a fat version PS2 (still the most advanced console in my possession to date) with the following selection of titles:
Colin McRae Rally 2005
Destroy All Humans!
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X2
God of War II
Grand Turismo 4
Ratchet & Clank
SSX Tricky
Soulcalibur III
...plus several PS1 games. ;-)
Emulators are a gift to humanity.
Sick racing line bro.
The most important part of the video. In 15 years from now, people would wonder what the hell does he means with "current circumstances".
I bought gt4 the day it came out but it never lived up to my expectations. I transferred my cars and credits from gt3 then kept playing gt3 for the next 5 years. I really should give it another chance.
Damn... I think I need to reactivate Jak & Daxter on my PC, I've got a PS2 but with such a great looking graphic on emulator I think I'll give a shot on that one
Dragon Quest 8 is worth checking out on an emulator. It has fantastic graphics for the time.
Can you post the settings you used in the emulator?
the 1080i mode actually has an internal resolution of 480p and will not look any different from the 480p
My experience playing GT4:
- spins
- crash
- spins
- more spins
- CD broke
😔 then I couldn't find the game again in my retailer...
Hey you should definitely emulate more games you own. I'm sure you have a couple lying around.
Such a great video!
The problem with PCSX2 is that it has twitchier analogue controls than the actual hardware for some reason.
That rally stage looks like Dirt 5 nowadays, I don’t know if I should cry or laugh
Ah yes, the classic played a game so much the PS2 quit reading the disc, good times, good times
I am using PCSX2 , and my chief complaints are that there is a noticable input lag, and some games are still exhibiting visual artifacts
