  • In this video we talk about the fact that all orchid growers kill plants. We hope to encourage those who at times feel disappointed and give up on growing orchids. We talk about orchids been resilient and show examples of some of our plants that have survived no matter what through the years.

Every plant parent has an up, and down, so, don’t always expect a clear journey! It is nice to see your collection again😊 Love your thumbnail😅

Very good video. You are right, we all have killed many orchids. I feel that I have learned and continue to learn from my own mistakes. Growing orchids takes a lot of work but the end result is very rewarding.

Absolutely, it's hard, relaxing, therapeutic work 🤣🤣. The more one does it, the more one gets better at it, and the more addictive one gets 🤣🤣. Thanks, Alejandro.

It's so true as any orchid collector has killed plenty of orchids as it's how we learn. It really is amazing to see how resilient orchids can be and how well they can survive and bounce back! And yes in nature orchids definitely take a beating and yet they still survive and bloom. Also Palmers fertilizer works like magic! The best!!

Hi, first, it was great meeting and chatting with you guys at Ecuagenera yesterday! Second, you guys have some beautiful orchids! I think it is really good for people to see this type of video. We all lose plants, but sometimes it's hard to not be hard on yourself and think it's all you, when in reality, it's natural and it happens to everyone.

Hi Vicky, hi Sergio, I don't always like giving cheerful comments, sometimes we have bad or good days right but you two taught me some great responses to give to viewers. I do value honesty over positivity ever day but both is great too of course. I once came up with a notion that basically most orchids that get stocked by nurseries are dead orchids walking. Ok that might be a not so positive notion. But it makes my orchid journey more enjoyable actually. Any that I can "rescue" is a success story but I do not expect it as standard. The most important things to master with orchids is keeping them in the right temperature range, giving them the right amount of light and the most important and the very hardest challenge is of course pest control.
There is a notion that you need to stress orchids or keeping them dry will encourage flowering or that temperature changes can influence flowering. These are believe it or not, incorrect notions.
Like how many of us have heard that dendrobium nobiles need a cool winter rest or they won't flower? Gets told to so many beginners and yes in nature they do come from areas that experience the cool down but it is never a temperature change that will cause any orchid in my experience to flower.
So we are bound to kill a few orchids here or there. Some people kill more than others. Best to follow the advice of growers that lose the least amount, not the growers that lose the most amount. That would be my number 1 advice to any orchid grower.
Really glad to see you are following Kathryn and Tristans advice from Ingram orchids. It's not so much the fertilizer they use but they use the RIGHT amount. On forums you will never see the advice that tristan and kathryn give. No joke. NEVER.
Orchids follow the 4 seasons in a year, this is also very important but if you cannot provide a cooler winter it gets in winter in nature most in my experience will do fine in a warmer climate too.
It certainly will not kill them like many would make you believe. Think about it if they can handle x temperatures in summer then the same temperature in winter time will not be the reason it ends up dying. They often go dormant in winter due to seasonal light changes and are far more likely to die in the dormant stage if the orchid was weak to start with.
Ok so taking all that into consideration, the main thing that sets orchids growers apart, why some can win AOS awards and others never can. Fertilizer. Or being able to figure out how to fertilize well long term.. Again many would disagree with me.
It is a tricky subject for sure. Sadly in my opinion there are only a few growers that recommend the right amount and most believe the weaker you fertilize the better. I already mentioned long term it just results in weak orchids.
But if an orchid is stagnating for whatever reason then it is true fertilizing won't be what saves it. But I am still a bit annoyed this notion to fertilize weakly weekly actually cost me a fair few orchids to begin with. And it is impossible to figure out how to fertilize from watching other youtubers. Only by trying it out myself did I see the difference in health and vigor between fertilizing too weak and fertilizing the right amount.
But of course one never wants to overfertilize either so to some this topic is just too complicated to master and for those maybe fertilizing just enough is good enough.
Anyway here I am rambling again. I'm hoping Tristan has some good updates on the beneficial insect experiment he has been doing. I think for you outdoor growers that might be a good way to keep the bugs away which as I mentioned is one of the hardest challenges and the biggest reason orchids become weak.
Sorry for the long ramble. Great to see a video on the good and the bad too

@@vickyslikes ah you're just being kind 😄 but carry on what you two are doing. You have so many knowledgeable growers around you, you are very lucky to be able to pick their brains for secret tips. My aim is to one day win an award for a plant I've grown but I actually live in the UK. The AOS award is the coveted one. Not sure I will ever get one of those but who knows what the future holds. Glad I get to meet you two online even if I probably never will in RL so that's a great thing about youtube. Have a good week you two

Hi Vicki and Sergio, great video. I know what it’s like to have to deal with cold damage. I a bunch all my orchids in a freeze, some years ago. I don’t know how some managed to survive the cold. I had put the ones on the patio inside and I did my usual cover up with frost cloth but it rained and there were strong winds, nearly everything got iced.
Good luck with the new space that you are creating. ❤

Hi,excellent video. I find that if my orchid is not looking great, i would rather cut the spike to save the plant. Let the plant rather concentrate on roots or just recovery after its last bloom cos it takes a tremendous amount of energy out of the plant.
If roots is an issue, i take root hormone and honey in a 750ml spry bottle, and i would spry it 3 times a week. ...
Our climate is very similar, so what i do with my vandas is that they get water daily via sprinklers for 30min. Then, on a Saturday or a sunday, i will soak them using a tub, and then there will be food in there. They way i learnt it ftom the professor in our orchid club...vandas are like teenagers, they always hungery and thirsty 😂....so i water daily for 30min and 1x week they get soaked in a tub with irchid food. ...same with that dendrobium tgat you showed in the beginning...change the medium then spry it 3x week with root hormone mixed with teaspoon of honey in 750ml spry bittle( you just need less then half of a tea spoon of root hormone) just to give it a boost. Dont give up on it yet. Love your collection great job 🎉🎉😊🎉
