Lots of fun edits in this video Rosie! ... and wow I'm getting some (unwanted) memories of early 90s PC games. Also I'm pretty sure that is Snorkers wearing a couple of costumes starting at 1:55 ! Great Snorkers content.
For a long time now I've believed in a conspiracy theory that 90's games often included a couple of nearly impossible puzzles on purpose. Because hardly anyone had the internet back then, it meant they could sell 'strategy guides' to people that were losing their shit about being locked out of the end of the game. Your only other option was subscribing to a gaming magazine and hoping that the solution came up in the hints and tips section. Can I prove this? No. But every bookshop and computer game shop had a shelf full of 'strategy guides' in the 90's, and most were just glorified walkthroughs. They were often launched at the same time as the game and were branded as 'official', so they had a clear financial incentive to make more people buy their bloody books.
Yet another treasure of a video on your channel! I have fond memories of being lucky enough at the time to have a PC more than capable of running this - yet it was pants! Most of the early CD-ROM stuff was just aweful imho... @16:37 🤣🤣🤣
The runtime of this video is probably longer than I would have spent playing it, so I'm really glad I get to live games like this through this channel :)
Fantastic work, Rosie! The CPU scaling is fascinating! I remember seeing it in the shop and thinking this looked spooky. Never played it. I detest bullshit puzzles..
@@primokarma9841 I'd have been brilliant in one of these. Would have played all the parts. Apparently they weren't going to be be ghosts to begin with, but the green screening left artifacting or something so they went "Fuck it, ghosts"
This is another terrific video mate, although not as good the Monty Mole one. The clip for 'The Jerk' was terrific, one of the funniest films ever made. My brother in law had 'The 7th guest' and I remember playing it with him. We got boarded with it after an hour or so :)
The part I will never forget as a kid is the sound that happens whenever you exit the game. A voice screams COME BACK!!!!! and that used to give me nightmares
great video, I'm proud to say it was the queens chess puzzle that finished me off with this game and even returning to it today it's where I always tend to nope out, so thanks for taking the bullet for us all on this one! . . . . . . Now do 11th hour, hehe 😈
This was spooktacular and I'm going to have 'can you feel the sunshine?' In my head for the rest of the week. To add the the horror, I've only ever played this game on the Philips CDi which was about as unbearable as it sounds 🤣 you have faaar more patience than me man. Loved it!
Can You Feel The Sunshine became a bit of a meme on our Discord channel as being the greatest Sonic song from a Sonic game everyone hates, so I ran with it, haha
My office pc was the only one of mine w/ a CDROM drive at the time and I would stay late after work to play 7th Guest. An empty office building could get a little creepy after midnight while playing this game. Groundbreaking game for the time, but some VERY frustrating puzzles!
Not only did I get this back in the day, but I also bought it on GOG too, yet I still have only ever played about 10 mins of it before giving up. I think this counts as some form of life lesson, but like the 7th Guest I have no idea what it is.
There's definitely something about games of this age where... If you owned them, even if you hated them or barely played them... You sort of want them back? It's weird. It's like nostalgia without nostalgia.
The plot makes.... more... sense if you see all the scenes in the right order, including the ones that they didn't put in the game which you have to read in the novelisation. The problem is they decided to let you do many of the puzzles in any order rather than going in a linear progression. The thing is the plot isn't that great so there's not really a point in remaking it and filling in the gaps. For example the magician being killed is supposed to happen in the crypt setting not the bedroom.
iirc I read an interview or something with some of the creators and for this they were more bothered about the tech and the actors then the game. Something they released was a mistake after it was made. and vowed to fix for the follow up the 11th hour. but no idea if its better or not, I'll wait for the review !
Thanks! You've saved me ever having to play this 😂 I didn't actually know it was THIS bad. How does it compare to Myst? Another FMV game I gave a miss!
They're not dissimilar honestly, but it's been years since I tried playing Myst. It's less campy, I'm not sure whether that's better or worse, but I'm sure it had better puzzles.
It's nice to see 7th guest is just as bad as I remember it being. Watching some of the cut scenes I now really want whathosnokers to produce a scene for scene remake of the whole game.
This was mainly a tech showcase. I had to join my cousin's 386 and video card with my CD-ROM drive and SoundBlaster card to manage playing it... we were blown away at FMV in 640x480 for the first time in a "game." A couple of years after this CDs were a dime a dozen and a TON of "games" that just added a bunch of videos to justify being on CD started pouring out of "publishers."
Actually loved this game. Still got the CD for this and it's sequel the 11th Hour. Also bought them both on GOG and bought the spiritual sequel 'The 13th Doll' on Steam. You're missing out mate!
He is not exagerating on how bad the UKs IT became after the 80s. We went from trying to fill entire rooms with a pc, learning how they worked etc to..... learning how to turn traffic lights on and off in technics and learning to print things / Microsoft word ¬_¬.
This is what happens when you have media with 650mb of space, but not enough RAM or processing power to properly harness it. Like the Mega CD, where you had 768kb of RAM that can be used for game data, including background graphics, sprites and non-streaming sound data, so in order to justify using CD most of it was just bog standard Mega Drive games with CD audio and FMVs. Hell, in some cases, it was less capable than a Mega Drive cartridge, hence no SF2, because it didn't have enough RAM to hold the required sprites, whereas cartridge games could instantly pull sprites from a 4mb(6mb in the case of SSF2) cartridge.
I'll give this video 1 Santa's out of 10 I think playing the whole game to see the acid vomit scene was worth it, I mean it was worth *YOU* playing this whole game for that! Just tell me thou, what would you of done better with this game?
I mean maybe read the accompanying material that literally explains everything, or the novel that came with some editions, or the making of vhs that came with the game... I could go on... I mean the game makes enough sense that 6 year old me understood it fully (and was seriously traumatized) God I remember being so excited to go to circuit city and play this on their display PCs, it was such an amazing time, and an amazing game
Out of the two big CDROM sellers, this might be flashier but Myst is so so much better designed. The 11th Hour's not much better either. Higher production values, yes, but it repeated a lot of T7G's mistakes.
Definitely not the best-aged game... it has, however, gotten a total remake since this video came out, which fixes a LOT of the problems, including both the pacing and making the puzzles less bullshit! It's worth a look, for anyone who has the hardware. (The remake is, unfortunately, VR-only.)
Come on, man. You can’t judge a game like this based on modern standards. This game was incredible back in its day. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing on my screen at the time! Even today, I still enjoy playing it, because it’s part nostalgia and part (mostly) fun puzzles.
Huh. I played this in the 90s and knew the plot and characters, so I’m stumped by why you didn’t have anything explained. Was there an instruction manual or something you skipped? Appreciate the time and effort you spent to beat the optional but totally unfair microscope puzzle! I know you didn’t like interacting with things, but you can use the hint book in the library to skip most, if not all, of the puzzles. I think it skips some of the cutscenes when it solves the puzzle for you, too. I only enjoy this game because nostalgia, although the soundtrack is still terrific. Grew up with all those obtuse Sierra adventure games so I was used to slow gameplay and exploring the same locations over and over and over and trying the same thing I’d already tried 50 times
I'm not saying every game featuring a unskippable cutscene could be improved by a skeleton dancing but the proof is before our very eyes.

It was actually the solution to the puzzle!

I loved this game as a kid. And even today it brings a lot of nostalgia

I remember playing hours this game in the 90's watching the video brings back good memories.😃
Great video! Probably not going to rush out to grab a copy of this! Nice to see it in action though
Don't lie, it was awful to see it in action!

Yeah, I can definitely see why this and Myst were well up there in popularity at the time. Nothing else quite like it back then.
I suppose now you have to do The 11th Hour.
How dare you suggest such a terrible fate
There's also a fan-made sequel called The 13th Doll which came out in 2019 featuring some of the original actors.
