Mom & Dad built a house in Anchorage, AK that I was raised in. It was a great house but they painted it PINK!! I love this song! Later we moved to Oregon and bought a farm and we lost everything but John was doing farm aide and brought out our the farmers plight. Damn, those farmers worked so hard and lost everything.
que bien mellencamp, usted se merece ese premio y muchos mas, los que hablamos español,tambien apreciamos tu musica, volvamos todos al pueblo pequeño, y a las casas rosadas ...felicitaciones..pretty cool
He was the 80's Bob Dylan. For those of us who grew up in the Midwest in the 80's, we witnessed the very things Mellencamp wrote about. The decline of the family farm was a big deal. I remember driving the interstates and seeing signs on farm land written by farmers pleading for help. Unfortunately, most died out and now all we have are corporate farms. Rain on the Scarecrow is his masterpiece in my opinion.
both are absolutely fantastically good artists, and are very similar in what they sing about and are musically about. Both should be praised, not compared.
We have to respect the perspectives that Springsteen, Mellencamp, and Bob Seeger all write from--the areas which they represent. Bruce represents Jersey, always has in his writing. John represents Indiana; in many ways has a tougher core from which he writes than Bruce...and so does Seeger. But honestly, do any of us really revere "Born To Run" more than "Pink Houses" or "Against The Wind"? Those are all magnificent songs. Convince me otherwise...
Folk singers should not be compared.. It's not how many top whatever's they have.. It's about listening to the message they are try'n to send us.. Mellincamp and Springsteen are both masters at this.. So shut up and listen!!!
@BrandonCrazyTV That is whats so Great About Mellencamp. He can Deliver the same message without all the complexity and Metaphors and Still Make the Song Sound Just as Beautiful. I Love Springsteen Personal Choice wise I Choose Mellencamp Over Him Because Where Springsteen Is Consistent in His Records No Two Mellencamp Records are the Same. Now On a Talent Scale Both are Equal. A 10.5 For Both of them !
Oh yes! Just because a magazine made a list of the greatest artists and albums of all times means it must be true. If Rolling Stone says it, it must be true. And Justin Bieber must be a great artist because he was on its cover. Seriously though, just because Rolling Stone says something, doesn't make it so. I'm sure there are many great albums and artists that didn't make their list and many that did who are overrated.
and springsteen has 20 songs. its a fact of music. they don't call springsteen the boss for nothing. he owns. hes obviously not better then zeppeling or floyd but def better then mellencamp. who do you think influenced mellencamp? springsteen!
When you think of the Heartland, you think of John Mellencamp. True American in every sense of the word.
John Mellencamp is one of the best artists ever!
America is a good country! This music hits home. Thanx for the great tunes.
One of the best live performance of this song.

Don't try to tell me there's a better American artist than this man, go listen to his many, fine songs and you'll see i'm right.
Always have loved this song and especially this particular live version. I keep coming back to listen to it and that fiddle solo, which is EVERYTHING.
Amazing...My Favorite Singer Song Writer.
My god that bass is so powerful on this version. 5 string really enhanced the sound to me.
Love to watch him perform and his rythem and movements...great performance.
Very few bands can bring it this hard.
LONG LIVE JOHN MELLENCAMP!!!!!!!!!!!
Bitchin' version of this song!! It was Mellencamp's night, and he knew it, too.

Dane Clark's and Indiana boy and I have much respect for his work. But didn't this song sound better with the power of Kenny Aronoff? Hit it hard!
Nice patriotic song for Memorial day.
Notice the lack of an ear monitor? How many performers can do that?
they should have turned his mic UP
Classic. Just like you. Wait a minute, I meant class act...always.
Nice fiddle there too
Who's the chick with the fiddle having the conniption fit?
I can't tell if this is a live version or if JCM is just lip syncing.
@minutes2memories58
Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty are pretty good too. Oh and don't forget Bob Dylan
i gotta disagree, Mellencamp has 10 songs that will be played 100 years from now, springsteen, maybe four.
@jagerjack1 No to springsteen. Hell yes to mellencamp!
