im pretty new to fishing, living in corpus i was fishing oso bay with a cheap walmart rod. i threw out a cigar minow and thought i was hung up on a log or something because i was slowly pulling it in, the handle on my walmart rod broke off and there 15 feet in front of me jumped a huge tarpon. the old man next to me said it has been years since he had seen a tarpon in oso bay. i was amazed and have been going back since with some better gear to hopefully catch one.
Every year there is a fishing tournament out of Port Aransas,Texas called the "Deep Sea Round Up" Way way back in the day the tournament was called the TARPON RODEO.

People have been fly fishing for TX tarpon way longer than you have. "the first fly rod caught tarpon in the state of texas" is an absolutely ridiculous statement.

Today is June 18, 2019. It is full moon. The tarpon are near North Padre Island and Port Aransas at this time. They will be at Freeport by July 4.
