How Far Can You Go on a Stock Taranis Q X7?

- A lot of people are getting into long range systems such as the TBS Crossfire and FrSky R9M. But how good is a stock 2.4GHz/5.8GHz 5" FPV Quadcopter setup? In this video I do two flights up mountains in which I test the limits of the systems.
All flight videos include DVR to see the quality of the video. The RSSI can also be seen in the top left of the DVR.
The max distance travelled was approx. 1.07 km in the first flight, 1.08 km in the second flight.
The results mainly tell us that the most limiting factors are the battery size (assuming a 1300 or 1500mAh pack) and the VTX links. I will probably follow this test up with another one in which I see if I can improve the results with an improved VTX setup. It is very interesting that the lower output TBS Unify outperformed the higher output Eachine TX801, despite the Eachine outputting 800mW. That may be indicative of a fault in the VTX, a broken antenna or a noisy RF environment.

With Gps rescue you would be able to test the range a bit more extensively with peace of mind. You just need a small gps module and betaflight.
there's no fun in rth XD
My setup would have failsafed at about the 1:40 mark. I must be doing something wrong...
maybe change the mw output
@@calisterty4894 my x9lite s mw is locked at supposedly 100mw but feels like 10mw
instablaster
Decent range Bro 👍 Get some 1550 or 1800 Rline Tattu packs. Great batts 👍 Rssi was still 71% up there
yah I noticed that too... he could have gone much further
moral of the story in my eyes is you will get well over the 500/650m range that others say on a stock setup, this gives me confidence well done dude
So it really wasn't about your QX7 Tx failing since RSSI barely dropped below 75 but really the video signal coming back!
Dude out are brave that video feed would have scared the shit out of me
I would have panicked when he lost vision for three seconds, probably diving to the ground
Yea id been freaking. Prob would of max throttled that shit
great video :D i am still using my Taranis X9D+ with the stock 2.4GHz built in transmitter. i have done the antenna mod and i sometimes use a 5dBi antenna for a bit more range.
using a tbs unify pro at 500mW with the tbs triumph and my video can go as far as my RC link. i have managed to do a few 2km flights this summer but i wont go any further than that because it would drain my 1550mAh packs.
Very impressive! 2km is really far on a 2.4GHz link. The Unify Pro is probably the best money you can spend if you want to increase your flight range. I think I'll try putting that with a Triumph on my freestyle rig and seeing how far it goes
Hi. If you could enlighten a little, what are the antennas you put on your goggles for receiving signals from the Unify Pro? Thanks.
Did you get breakups during that 2 km fly out?
That's a seriously good spot fella...
This video has proven to me that I don't need Crossfire yet. There's no way I'll be flying any further than 500-800m away anyway, as I'd be terrified of losing my quad. Something for the future maybe, but for now it saves me some money!
Excellent...my ass was going when you turned around on the first flight..video was shocking.. get some gps rth.. also some wings would be great with that landscape 👍🏾
Awesome!
It seems like your FPV feed is the limit... Your Rx signal might be still good?
yeah, the rx should have more range being 2.4Ghz and not many obstacles.
I agree that it looked like your video feed and battery were the main limiting factors from what I could tell. Maybe a higher output Unify VTX and a larger capacity battery next time? I love how far my stock Taranis X9D+ will fly with no obstacles in the way. I still haven't found the right place to really test out the range around here where I live though. Keep the content coming!
That's the plan! I want to experiment more with this kind of setup, but next time I'll probably try the Unify Pro at 800mW with at least a 1500mAh battery.
what a beautiful land !
A similar test was done on a DX7 (Spektrum) and went out to 4Km LOS with no obstructions using a standard 7ch receiver. If you had a 5 turn helical on your goggles you could have gone further up the mountain. Your RSSI was very good.
The only thing I see nobody else has said is, that’s a great range test, but there’s no interference from competing 2.4 signals such as wifi routers in offices and homes that we sometimes fly around. If I fly in my neighborhood (safely) and I go more than 4 houses away, I drop out all RC link due to other 2.4 gHz signals from everybody’s routers. Just a thought. Wouldn’t mind seeing a test in that sort of environment.
Dayyngg howd you fly home like that! She went a ways!!
Awesome video! maybe do another with crossfire comparison if you ever get it! cheers
Great video bro keep up the good work
That would be one hell of a hike if you had to go there and get it.
that was ballzy
Nuts
That's awesome range for 200mw from what I've seen on the internet
Not that surprised .Whit simple FlySky radio for 45$ I reached 1.6km and the video link start to break .So 100 $ radio have to be as good as radio that is have the price !!!!
what is the flight time??
how long we can increase it to?
Im thinking about 25mins????
I don't know if you've tested more but I saw on your second flight, you flew to your left. Won't it be better if you stayed in front of your patch antenna for best distance? Also, try Menace RC's Pico Patch out.
interesting FrSky R9M is the factor here transmitter to receiver but hey everyone is on crossfire now anyway right its the VTX's range were all concerned about now ..
Good job sir,,,
Answers that question! How are you able to get RSSI through your receiver?
I get easily over 1.8km with the xm+ before it drops below the 60's in rssi and link quality starts to drop( on a x9d, but basically the same). I think it can do 2km if it's done the right way.
very informative
Have you tried the transmitter antenna in the original horizontal position? Experts say it’s the best position to optimal performance so longer range. This comment may come a bit too late.
Wow mine at 300 m is beeping because of weak signal. I think I am blocked to 25mw. Help!
Your video link is quite bad! I wonder why. I would have paniced!
Which goggles and vtx do you use?
Great vid man. Where is this location mate? Looks amazing
I found out the hard way not to adjust antenna while flying away from yourself
Thanks for sharing! Much appreciated!
Would the Stock Qx7 without module be a decent upgrade from a flysky i6??
Definitely! I went to a qx7 from an i6s
@@sylek0 Exactly my route bro, with an R9 module i guess, but i mean would i get more range without module and Frsky receiver than Flysky receiver?
how do you fly threw all that snow??!??!?
Meanwhile my r-xsr has failsafe straight line of sight as close as 80 meters (i think both antennas were broke) brand new max i made was 400 meters
My r9m would have fail-safe right in the start
The TBS video transmitter had far less image shaking...
Nice vid! Where do you keep your commander batteries? Saw that you have long wires connected to it.
In my pocket! I just made my own long XT60 to barrel connector wire
Workbench - Home DIY Engineering thats clever. I think its safer that sticking it at the back of your head.
What happened with fpv? Bad vtx, goggles or antennas?
xm+ rx isn't going to give as much range as rxsr for example.
where is this ?
Can this transmitter use with eachine tyro99
Looks to me like it's your video tx that is going out before your controller signal. I listened and you turned when your video rx got fuzzy. Upgrade your vtx to long range.
Also it said your testing the controller signal. So it stood up but the vtx did not. If this is correct
whats the all up weight of the setup ?
how do you get your RSSI on the OSD with the XM+????
Activate osd in beta flight, dehactivate adc rssi in config, make sure in receiver page rssi displays when connecting transmitter (probably aux12) and up to the right select the same channel for rssi. The go to the osd page and select rssi and place it wherever you want it to be displayed. Probably explained horribly, but you still have millions of videos in UA-cam if any doubt
m.ua-cam.com/video/bvlNaWUeAAU/v-deo.html
The best one I found
Damn that was some pretty noisy video when turning around!
Yeah! I freaked out a bit
Get a 2.4 booster and fly with the same reciever
Correct used to fly close to 5km with bosster on Tarans radio 800mw vtx
Con la Tarianus Q x7 y Frsky xm no llego mas haya de 1km.
Damn something wrong with your video feed bruh
1 km, that's it? My stock DJI controller gets me over 2 miles, about 3 1/2 km. Never drops video feed or has any lag time. If I may, what is the advantage of buying a giant sized over complicated controller that doesn't even have a video feed?
Range is good, picture not so good.
Omg you really should do something on your video antennas. (first video)
Crappy video.
Buy decent ones (I'll make them haha)
Btw flying in this spot should increase your range dramatically compared to live near big cities or crowded area. Not much interference out there
interesting FrSky R9M is the factor here transmitter to receiver but hey everyone is on crossfire now anyway right its the VTX's range were all concerned about now ..
