  • Hello string players,
We spend hours working on our left hand for intonation, speed, vibrato etc., but sometimes we neglect the right hand. Here is another strategy that I use when working on sound.
Please also watch part one here: • How I Work on My Sound...
    Happy practicing!

This is one of the most valuable things I’ve found. Thank you Inbal. I’m usually too focused on intonation and fingering and my sound suffers.

Good pointers. I think that I definitely need to spend more time on things like this. Thank you for the video.

I love your tutorial! I think they are very helpful. Can you please do a tutorial on how to fingering fast notes? I have a bit trouble on playing passage such as the flight of bumble bee which requires a very fast fingers placement and bowing.

This is very helpful! Thank you so much for making these great videos! Would you ever consider making a vid. on how to distribute arm weight for a big sound? I have so much trouble with this! I try playing close to the bridge, diff. speeds of the bow, trying to feel heavy and relaxed in my arm and can never get the big sound I am looking for.

Blacknightiger mcknight hi, my “how I work on my sound part one” is more about that, practicing yoga helped me learn to use my right arm and upper body weight. The key is to be relaxed in the shoulders and upper body. You can experiment with playing open strings while standing up and sitting down, notice when your sound is at its best and try to recreate the conditions that made it happen. It is a life long quest. Finally- try to gain a bit of weight, I do that before important concerts/recordings.

I have a question, I'm cello player too and I these days I´m a bit questioning my way of how my right hand works so my question is about it :). Does your thump do any movement while the down bow, or for start the movement? I mean, is it active in the down bow?.

When you are spending 20 minutes playing open strings with metronome on to keep your bow speed constant, what are you trying to notice? Any suggestions to keep focused on listening and sensing, when the sound can be monotonous?

Hi, first- I don't use the metronome the whole time. The metronome is to give you a sense of how fast your bow is moving. Once you establish the speed you should turn the metronome off and listen to your sound. It should be strong, rich, dark, free! meaning- not forced and scratchy but rather beautiful and you should be using the weight of your arm rather than press down. I hope that helps!

Ok, phew! I’m glad to know that you turn the metronome off after establishing the speed. Do you always use 60 at 5 to 6 clicks to start out?

I usually use 60 BPM and about 5 or 6 clicks per bow, yes. It's just an easy way to measure yourself.
