  • Electrophysiological techniques are used to study the activity of ion channels. One of the main techniques is voltage clamp: a method for controlling the membrane potential while recording ion channel currents. Patch clamp is a specialised type of voltage clamp, which begins with a patch of cell membrane being electrically isolated under the tip of a glass micropipette. This video explains the history and basic principles behind voltage-clamp and its extension to patch-clamp electrophysiology.
