    I've been obsessively watching your spring planting videos this month and have used your calendar since January. I have loads of healthy starts, a low tunnel bed (uncovered for now) with spinach, mache, lettuce, and peas up, I'm planting root crop seeds out tomorrow and have Agribond standing by just in case, and I'll be eating homegrown organic food by mid-April because of your instructions. Clear, informative, scientific, and yes, revolutionary!
    This old lady took delivery of two tons of compost Tuesday and spread it all within six hours over the lasagna system that covers most of my new back yard. Yesterday, I chipped the neighborhood's fallen branches for four hours because if they are willing to hand me their property's fertility, I'm down for that. Built a rabbit fence all by myself on Friday. Obvs, I'm pumped!

    Thank you Patrick for taking the time to share your wealth of knowledge. Love watching your channel because you get straight to the point and include more information in half the time that some of the other channels I've been watching do. Although I have been avid gardener for over 30 years, I am relatively new to the Permaculture way. My heart was broken a few years ago when because of health reasons I was unable to till and plant my garden. While looking into alternatives such as container and raised bed gardening, I discovered the back to Eden method and it blew me away. I started my first no dig raised bed 3 years ago and thanks to gardeners like you I am able to continue gardening and doing so in a much healthier and a more environment friendlier way. This year we are adding 2 more beds which brings our total to 8. Thank you so much for the inspiration and all the help you have given to me.

    We rewatched Oscar's best last weekend so your ears must have been burning. Thanks sooo much for the planting guide as it will give me a good kick to start planning. Since last frost date is in June, I've got time and there is still a foot of snow outside. I've ordered some new perennials such as 2 grape varieties and purple asparagus with a shipping date in the near future. Can't wait to see my green asparagus that I started from seed last year pop up. It will be difficult not to sample for another 2 years. My front yard veg garden sadly has to be discontinued. No issues with neighbour's, it is the rabbits, deer etc with their nighttime snacking! Any suggestions that don't make it look like Fort Knox?

    I notice you have artichokes listed in the guide, do you grow them and if so which kind. I live north of you in Minnesota. Yours is my favorite gardening channel. I tried bringing the roots from last year (did not get a crop) to see if I could over winter them, but I haven't checked yet. This year I plan to try bags. I know they get really big but then I wouldn't have to dig up the roots, giving them a better chance of survival. I keep referring people to your video on how you got plants to survive sub-zero weather, every time they worry about the temperatures getting lower in the future. Great job. Love Oscar, too bad my cat was not the type to do much in the garden, asides from roll around on his many catnip plants, collecting seeds. They are all he would plant.

    • @OneYardRevolution
      @OneYardRevolution  5 років тому

      We tried growing an artichoke variety that was hardy to zone 6. We kept it under double cover in winter. Unfortunately, it didn't make it through the second winter.

    Hi Patrick...not sure if its all the mulch breakdown in our soil mixed with copious rain but for the last three years we have been letting all our lettuce go to seed then broad casting in Sept/Oct. It comes up and stays small over winter. Some we covered with clear shallow totes with mixed in chard and kale but even lettuce plants exposed still stayed alive and compact until the few warm days last week. Then everything just popped but not as large as yours. We have yet to cover those. Not sure what will happen but maybe there is something to check out there for you? As usual, your garden is so organized as is your planting. Thanks for the reminders of what else can be going on.

    • @OneYardRevolution
      @OneYardRevolution  5 років тому

      Hi Suzanne! I'm happy to hear your volunteer lettuce is doing well. We let some of our winter greens self-sow but usually plant lettuce more deliberately.

    I know you have done some videos in the past about how much actual time you spend in the garden. Have you ever rough estimated how much time you spend in a year. What I'm really curious is if you've ever worked up a number for the average weekly time or even daily time spent in the garden from a typical year. Those numbers I think would be really helpful for me when evangelizing new converts. Thank you again for all you have done.

    Patrick, I don't know if you have discussed your approach to seeds much. Do you keep seeds yourself, or purchase new ones for each season? If you keep the seeds from the previous season (whether this is what is left over from the purchased seeds or otherwise), what do you keep them in? Are there different conditions you use for different types of plants/seeds? Said it before, but again: great videos, love the content, Oscar is awesome, and as always thanks for inspiring change one yard at a time.

    Yay I missed your videos! Always helps me know when I should be doing what!
    Love your little Nip head too. He’s so fun.
    I have to be careful with venting- overheated several beds this year. Whoops.
    Doesn’t your greenhouse plastic degrade faster by coming in contact with PVC? I saw a study where it creates a chlorine like compound. Have to look again at the article my nursery sent me on it when I asked. Was pretty thick though. Do you have suggestions?
    Thanks Patrick- happy growing. Sure hope you’re able to post more videos, makes keeping on time more enjoyable.

      Got it, thanks again. The spring one is bang on. Especially for Tomatoes. I usually get mine in the ground between June 5-10. We had flurries on June 4th last year, glad I waited, it warmed right up after that. I also follow Niki Jabbour, she is based near Halifax and she is a big winter gardener

      You nailed the garlic as well. Thanksgiving is when mine goes in. I've been growing it for the last seven years.

    Nice raised beds with the cover. Did you make it yourself? I am also planing to build raised beds and will probably also made some with the cover.
    Cant wait to have 007 vegetables and put them undercover :D

    So helpful. Thank-you. Do you have any tips or plans for building a covering like that in a dome shape over a regular garden? One that could later be removed? TIA!

    Thank you for the Spring Planting Calendar and all the information you provide. I believe you are in Zone 5b, right?

      @OneYardRevolution  5 років тому

      You're welcome, Kevin! Yes, we're in 5b, but the planting calendar is based on last frost date, so you can use it if you live in an area that has freezing temperatures in winter.

    Love what you are doing. I'm going to be making more transitions to beds with single and double cover throughout this year. Thanks for the inspiration. Do your metal rounds out front have bottoms or are they just rounds? Where do you find them?

    Hi,
    I have to admit, I'm envious of your hinged tunnels. That's some fine work. You keep mentioning you're in zone 5, but in which state are you exactly ?
    Also, be careful with the amounts of compost you're using. With all the mulch and worms that you have, I'm not sure compost is really necessary. Especially for legumes like peas. I'd rather put my food scraps on the ground rather than in the compost bin and use a permanent thick mulch of wood chips or straw. That's because compost doesn't create humus, it's just a quick fertilizer, worms and fungi don't eat it (unless it's half done), it's already been eaten by bacteria. And although it's not measured yet, I suspect that in gardens where people use huge amounts of compost instead of wood chips or straw, they pollute the rivers or groundwater with nitrogen, as it's mineral nitrogen in a compost, washable by rains, just like any manure or chemical fertilizer, instead of organic nitrogen stored in humus. You don't wanna turn into Charles Dowding.
    In France, many vegetable farmers are using wood chips or straw/hay to produce, it's called "Agriculture Sol Vivant", about 200 farms in the country are doing it. But a few of them use only green compost, made from garden scraps people bring to the dump when they prune or cut trees. So, like Charles Dowding, those farmers can get huge amounts for cheap at the local dump (around 10 € per tonne, sometimes for free if the dump can't sell it). And the water agency already told them to be careful using compost on their farm, as they suspect they're polluting the water. We're talking a 20 cm layer of compost on a few hectares of land. So a new legislation may come up, with restrictions on the amounts of compost you can use. And if it's polluting the water, it's justified. In most areas, wood chips are the same price as compost anyway, and they feed your soil while compost doesn't. I'd rather cultivate in good humus, a natural soil, than in a pile of compost. Your method seems to be half way between those. Have you tried a bed with only wood chips and no compost at all ?

    • @OneYardRevolution
      @OneYardRevolution  5 років тому +1

      Hi Nicholas! We're in northern Illinois. You're right; it's possible to use too much compost. We've cut way back in recent years and only compost waste generated on site. Wood chips, leaves, grass clippings, etc. are only used as mulch. We don't compost them.

    I'm curious to see what all you've got going on in your indoor growing room... Those lettuces you transplanted look just about ready for a first cut! I've got a variety of brassicas I've started that I'm hoping to move out to the garden soon and get a harvest before they get decimated by the bugs. Other than that, I've started a lot of the same plants: lettuces, peas, carrots

    • @OneYardRevolution
      @OneYardRevolution  5 років тому

      You're off to a great start! So far, we've started tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, tomatillos, sweet potatoes, lettuce, celery, kale, and collards in the grow room.

      @@OneYardRevolution I didn't realize it was already a good time to start heat loving crops. I don't get a ton of sun so I won't try much with tomatoes and peppers but I do think I will start some sweet potato slips soon. Just saw your video on those

  • @sage0925

    I have a lean-to greenhouse connected to the side of my house. Would that, in zone 5, be considered single cover? There are insulated walls on 3 sides, and clear plastic roofing sheeting (the harder stuff, not the flexible sheeting like you have). All the holes have been filled with insulation foam. It's pretty tight, but it does get cold in there in deep winter. Raised beds at 16". A lot of stuff in buckets.

    • @OneYardRevolution
      @OneYardRevolution  5 років тому +1

      Because of the warmth from your house, your greenhouse should offer more protection than my single cover structures. Assuming your greenhouse gets plenty of sun, I'd experiment starting cool weather plants 3 to 6 weeks early in the raised beds. I'd succession plant over that time period to be on the safe side. One thing to consider about smaller containers is that the soil freezes and thaws repeatedly, so you'll want to plant later in them.
