I just discovered Mandolin Orange last month while in California..
    (wildfire)
just discovered this song on this day, the 11th year after my wife passed.
raised our three children alone and today they all found comfort in this song.
    Thank you for that!!!

There is probably nothing more harrowing in the whole damn universe than the quiet passing of a mom who hasn't asked for anything other than the happiness of her children. This majestic piece, if anything, should remind us that our existence is so extraordinary, so unexpected and so beautiful that it could only come with an unbearably heavy price attached to it...

Without saying so explicitly, this song expresses that paradox of grief. That the pain of loss flows from the the fact that what was lost was so precious and there in your life, unearned but oh so treasured. And then you have to learn to wrap your heart around the memories.

Heard it first by great fortune on the radio in the car. I had parked in front of my house when the tune started and I stayed in the vehicle because I could not leave. I could not breathe. Then came the flood and I sobbed long after I turned the dial off. Never heard of Mandolin Orange before until this moment. And now I am a fan for life. This song is an instant classic with a haunting beauty beyond description. It will sound just as amazing and have the same impact long after I too have left this world. A gift indeed.

Crazy... The same thing just happened to me and I only heard a clip of them on a friends Instagram post live , for the first time. I wasn’t even sad, but tears just came running uncontrollably and I could not stop listening or stop crying... Such a beautiful song. For 12 years I’ve been seeing the number 444 almost everyday, I searched for the song online and to my surprise the length of the song is 4:44... Reading the comments & how this song has impacted people is unbelievable.

@Ewan McEwan yes thank you for putting that into words so eloquently. I couldn't have said it better myself. I found this song 🎵 by accident and after just a few seconds I was hooked. Their harmony is incredible and it's lyrically beautiful. I've never heard of this group before but I'm also a fan for life now. I've listened to it atleast four times and cannot get through it without crying. One of the reasons I love music so much is because it forces me to feel emotions that have been buried for years, esp the uncomfortable ones that I mistakenly thought were buried long ago.

"Golden Embers" first reeled me in a little over a year ago when I accidentally came across it. Its footprint haunts and helps and, I don't think a day has gone by without my mind's playlist sampling it. So, I had to see Mandolin Orange when they stopped in Dallas, March 2019. There was such a crowd at the Kessler I couldn't even see the stage, but I still heard "Golden Embers" live and it pierced me just the same. My Mom passed Jan. 6, 2020. I set it in motion in my truck during the funeral procession on the drive to the Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery -- feeling the grief soul squeeze of reality as I inhaled it for real. Thank you for this musical tribute which, despite the loss and pain, summons the memories. Inhale their fragrance. Repeat.

This video was my life in 1991-1992, right after my mom died of cancer. I was 11 years old, living with my dad in Joplin, Missouri. My dad had about a '76 Ford F100 that was a brown color like the truck in this video. I spent a lot of time hanging around in the woods and near gravel pits trying to make sense of had happened in my life, and hanging around with my dad, grabbing donuts and a Pepsi every morning at a local donut shop before we'd go to work at his construction business. This video was my life.

Sometime we find songs that help us do the emotional work we need to do. For me, this song is helping me deal with the death of a postgraduate academic advisor, tough as nails, kind as lilacs. I admired him, I adored him in the way a student adores an amazing teacher. Not a day goes by that think "Let me talk to Steve about this .... Oh. Yeah. Oh." I wish there was someone in my life now with whom I could share his golden embers .

I've been listening to Mandolin Orange ever since 2014 when I heard their song, "One More Down" on Pandora. I was reading a book at the time with music on in the background and I remember stopping to just listen to that song. Andrew's voice initially drew me in but the melody and Emily's harmonizing was magic to my ears. I immediately went to UA-cam to listen to the song again....and then every other song they had out at the time. I've listened to them almost every day since. Just a truly wonderful band playing great music.

    Lyrics
    **~~
Just like an old friend, kinder than expected
That Cadillac came and gave our girl a ride
Loss has no end, it binds to our connection
We don't speak of it, we don't even try
If you could help me to share the trouble
That you've got burning in you, then you can help me
And in our time together, her memory will ever
Shine like golden embers in the night
I miss the old hymns, when she used to sing
The sparrows spread their mortal wings
Now they've all lighted with the silence of strings
Like notes on the pages, she breathed life into all things
If you could help me to share the trouble
That you've got burning in you, then you can help me
And in our time together, her memory will ever
Shine like golden embers in the night
Just like an old friend, reach out to me
Bathe me in the light of understanding
Try to help me to share the trouble
But you've got burned and then you, then you can help me
And in our time together, her memory will ever
Shine like golden embers in the night

This song and video are exquisite pieces of sensitivity and grace on the subject of loss and grief. I'm a pessimistic, tough critic, but this is the genuine article.
The song is clearly considered, nuanced, artfully crafted and bursting with the pain of loss, and the video is unusual in the way that it adds to the experience with a similar level of careful, heartfelt consideration. The dichotomy of two ways of dealing with grief in various stages in life is truly elegant and brutal, all at once. As a viewer, I knew exactly how both characters felt, and sympathized with both. The tiny cut of the boy touching the car window he destroyed was important to me. If it was a slow pass, it would feel obvious or goofy. Because the director asks the viewer to extrapolate and regard the video, emotional content feels much more genuine. I'm not analyzing my feelings as a teenage boy going through a fit of rage when I realize the world sucks. The director expects some effort from the viewer to evaluate the emotional impact of the way he put together his piece, which is refreshing.
The Dad is made of hardened steel chased with gold inlay. Throughout the video, his small, gentle glances and enveloping touches to his son are heart melting, and all of that is done naturally and organically without obvious fanfare, and easy to miss if you're wiping away tears. Great, subtle acting. The later primal scenes with the fire are a clear climax and assure the viewer that everything will eventually be ok for a loving Father and Son, as it has been for time immemorial. I really believed the actors were having a genuine heart-to-heart talk about the late Mom.

It is a blur now where I found this song, but that line "that Cadillac gave our girl a ride" caught me. Now, in death this is our song. Like so many love songs that capture that beautiful feeling of happiness, this captures the depths of sorrow for me. There are so many inside jokes or phrases that we shared that no one on this earth would truly get. But we got it. Now those meanings are lost forever and not shared but buried with my love. It has been five months and the tears have become fewer and fewer. But it builds up and this song helps it let go. And I rub the belly of the tender mutt whose eyes gazed so deeply in hers. And I let go. His rhythmic breathing paces mine and he lays with paws in the air. The creature she so loved more than anything remains a bridge between us and life and death.

I found out this weekend that my long-ago lover passed away, and the news was devastating. She and her son, then in his early teens, had been a big part of my life, 40 years ago. I'm older. He's older. But the stunning loss of her, and this video showing up today, makes this feel so surreal.

My Mama left here 32 years ago I never heard her say one unkind word to anyone her whole life. She spent all of her life giving to others. I cherish the memories of her.

My mom passed away July 2013 . It took a little over a year for me to get through this song , without bawling ! "Loss has no end" ... every time !! 😢
I'm proud to say , i can now sing the whole song right along with them ... most days . 😉
Easily one of the most beautiful songs to ever bless my ears !

    Golden Embers
    Just like an old friend
    Kinder than expected
That Cadillac came and gave our girl a ride
    Loss has no end
    It binds to our connection
And we don’t speak of it, we don’t even try
If you could help me to share the trouble
that you’ve got burning in you, then you can help me
    And in our time together
Her memory will ever shine like golden embers in the night
    I miss the old hymns
    when she used to sing
The sparrows spread their mortal wings
    Now they’ve all lighted
    with the silence of strings
Like notes on the pages, she breathed life into all things
    Chorus
    Just like an old friend
    Reach out to me
Bathe me in the light of understanding
And try to help me to share the trouble
that you’ve got burning in you, then you can help me
    And in our time together
Her memory will ever shine like golden embers in the night
