Top Gun is a 1986 American action film directed by Tony Scott, and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, in association with Paramount Pictures. The screenplay was written by Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr., and was inspired by an article titled "Top Guns", written by Ehud Yonay and published in California magazine three years earlier. The film stars Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis, with Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, and Tom Skerritt in supporting roles. Cruise plays Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a young naval aviator aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. He and his radar intercept officer, Lieutenant (junior grade) Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Edwards), are given the chance to train at the US Navy's Fighter Weapons School at Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California.
Top Gun was released on May 16, 1986. Upon its release, the film received mixed reviews from film critics. Four weeks after release, the number of theaters showing it increased by 45 percent. Despite its initial mixed critical reaction, the film was a huge commercial hit, grossing $357 million globally against a production budget of $15 million. Top Gun was the highest grossing domestic film of 1986. The film maintained its popularity over the years and earned an IMAX 3D re-release in 2013. Additionally, the soundtrack to the film has since become one of the most popular movie soundtracks to date, reaching 9× Platinum certification. The film won both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for "Take My Breath Away" performed by Berlin. In 2015, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry, finding it "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". A sequel, titled Top Gun: Maverick, released 36 years later on May 27, 2022 and surpassed the original film both critically and commercially.

Can't wait for Top Gun 3. I saw the original Top Gun in the theater on the big screen with Dolby stereo and It was fantastic. I'm glad to see the Top Gun narrative still alive and well. Top Gun 2 certainly did not disapoint but a Top Gun 3.,.......Bring it on!!!!!
The summer of '86, I spent sitting in a wheelchair recovering from an accident. The pick-up truck was going 45 mph and my pedal bike and I did not fair well in that battle. I learned the hard way that, size really does matter!* :-D One day the therapists took myself and some other young patients to see the original in the theater. The loud roar of those jet engines taking off from the carrier, rattled my damaged mind and scared the stuffing out of me! One of the therapists had to roll me out to the lobby until I recomposed myself. Then we went back in and I enjoyed the wonderful Hollywood release. *The humor got kind of dark that summer in the rehab ward. (If ya wake up from the coma, you're allowed to make bad jokes about it! You should of heard some of the off-color jokes made in the rehab ward. --It feels better to laugh about it, than to cry...) 🙂
I think that in Top Gun 3 Maverick, with his personal issues resolved and due to his age, will no longer be Captain and will have a position of responsibility.
Yes, the new film should revolve around Rooster and Hangman, the new Maverick and Ice, accompanied by Phoenix, Bob and perhaps 2 or 4 new pilots.
But Top Gun is synonymous with Maverick and his F-14 Tomcat...
The issue is how to mix both of them into the central plot so that the film does not lose strength and seem inferior to the 2nd installment.
Top gun maverick was a strong film. The only thing I would have changed is the use of an anonymous country as the villain. I hope Top Gun 3 puts Russia in the storyline.
The best idea for a sequel is the top guns train for a space force mission and train space force recruits for a out of this world sequel
I look for them to Phase Tom Cruise out and replace him with Rooster. Hangman will become the number 2. Phoenix and Bob were kind of filler. Even when their plane crashed in Maverick, it was a non-event, so I do not expect them to play much of a role if any in Top Gun 3.

I doubt they'll use Tom for hard action later. More than likely they'll film bits here and there in current times and edit them into a delayed release.
Miss Kelly McGillis...no chemistry between Jennifer Connelly and Tom Cruise... disappointed in sequel Maverick. Top Gun was best
