Fun fact: “Cherry” flavored things (such as medicine) often use almond extract instead of actual cherry flavoring. That’s why when we taste almond extract we are conditioned to think of cherries.
It’s due to a chemical that is similar between cherries and monds

Haven't watched a GMM vid in like 4 years. Really digging Rhett's new look, and it's good to see that the guys haven't really changed.
First test seems flawed…they shouldn’t have been trying as they went along, just guess, move on, then try at the end. Like if I guessed that red was salty, then tried it to find it was sweet, then later when you ask which one is sweet, I’ll know which one it is.
Same with m and m test. They eliminated previous colors so it got progressively easier.
This only raises the ever more important question:
Do colorblind people taste colors differently? (Test)

It doesnt surprise me that they thought that almond tastes like cherry. Almonds have a chemical in them which breaks down into benzaldehyde, which is also present in cherries. Its why to some people ammaretto has cherry like tones to it!

I absolutely agree. I would love to see more of them just taking on interesting/unique studies that fit their vibe and try them like this one. I love most of their shenanigans but this episode was honestly a nice fresh take. I really want to see more. Maybe they have others I’ve missed.

I used to taste purple when I was a kid even when I wasn't even eating anything....😅
To be fair, grape flavoring is based on Concord grapes, but most of us don't eat those bc they have leathery skins and seeds. They are what the traditional dark grape juice and grape jelly are made of, though, and grape flavoring does taste like Concord (to an extent) to me. Regular seedless grapes have little distinct flavor.

so about the almond thing, almonds and cherries both get their flavor and scent from the small amount of cyanide they contain, they were both kind of correct, Rhett was correct in a literal sense.

Benzaldehyde is what gives the flavor. By product of cyanide or something like that
Not to mention that almond flavoring is the classic flavoring used to create the "cherry" flavor we're used to in candies

I've been rewatching all ur taste test and realized u haven't done a store bought coffee taste test yet. I think it would be awesome to see u guys do a blind taste test to see which one is best to u by ranking them and see if Rhett or Link is the ULTIMATE COFFEE BRIAN. Not so much actual almonds, but definitely almond extract. I have gone overboard with almond extract in cookies before and it does taste cherry like.
maraschino cherries typically have almond extract in the syrup, which might help build the association between the two
They have the same flavor profile pretty much. There is some science in there, chemistry stuff, but I know that there is some chemical that are in both that taste the same.
