I love all your videos. Always step by step simple work thanks for all your work. It makes my days so easy. This is going to be the next step/fix I’m a be doing on my yz85.
Thanks Jonathan! Good luck with your build!
@@SchnebsGarage thanks man i appreciate you
Great video very good work just like me you used Wisco piston and new container Wisco bottom end awesome video keep the great work up
wish I had a dad like you 😂 rebuild my top end for me 😢 Blew my top end and my grandpa made me rebuild it myself
Good skill to learn, 2 strokes havent changed much in years ;)
He is trying to teach you something so your not like the kids now and days and all they do is play video games
Why seco piston😂
What is ur suggestion on breaking in the motor
Normally just set the idle speed high and let it idle for a while. My son is (or was) really gentle on the motor so after an hour I just let him drive it. Key thing is to not abuse the engine during the break in period, dont over rev, dont race it hard etc...
No the crank can have side to side play. That's ok as long as there is no up and down play
Good luck keeping a YZ85 engine together very long if you have ANY side play in the crank. The only side play you should have is on the piston to connecting rod side. There are thrust bearings on the crank end to limit crank side play to near nothing.
No. I just got rid of a yz85 that was like that and every other bike I've had has had side to side play the yz85 lasted over a year and is still fine
The book on the crank side play says .008"-.028" (.2-.7mm) side play on the crank end of the rod. If you can feel 8 thousands of an inch of side play in the crank end of the rod then you are a better man than I. ;)
Actually side to side play in the big end and little end of crank is fine. Im a fully qualified mechanic
the crank can have a little side to side play, just no up and down play.
Hello, my yz85 is leaking transmission oil out of the little breather hole under the water pump. Do you know what would cause this? thank you
On the water pump shaft there are 2 seals. The outer one seals from coolant, the inner one seals from oil. You will need to take off the cover, remove water pump shaft. Water pump Bearing and replace the inner seal. Do both seals since you have it apart and have to remove the outer anyway.
Hiya again bud was the timing hard to set up after replacing top end ?
Not at all, 2 strokes are very simple in that regard. Make sure the piston is at top dead center (can use a thin wire or similar) put it in the spark plug hole and rotate the engine until its at TDC (top dead center). Then simply line up the marks on the backing plate with the one in the case, the lines should be .035" before TDC (about 1mm) and tighten the screws. There's not a whole lot of adjustment on these motors and truthfully, it'll run if your anywhere close to that.
Nice one buddy just seen a video on 2 stroke timing and sort of forgot about that stuff panicked a little but if I can set timing up on a husquvarna te450 I'm sure I can do it on yz85 :)
Where did you get it from i need it becosemine yz 85 is stock and we are going to renovate it
Got this one from rocky mountain atv and mc there is almost always a deal someplace so shop around but they are a great place to start.
I bought a piston for my 2002 YZ85, this is the second piston I've replaced. It did not come with the oil holes in the center, do I need to drill holes in the piston?
Probably best to contact the vendor to confirm as you never really know. I've never seen one on the yz85 that didnt have the holes and on this one there was instructions that came with it telling you to drill holes and where.
Thanks for the vid, I just subscribed
Thanks Ty ! Glad you liked it.
What happens if u put the arrow pointing to the intake?
If the piston is put in backwards the piston ring can expand in the exhaust opening and damage the ring, piston and cylinder.
@@SchnebsGarage yea but does it start
@@rakubro sure, but not sure for how long.
Did the wiseco kit last? I need to do a rebuild on my sons 06 yz 85.
Been in there 2 years and one month, still runs perfect.
Schneb thanks. I will purchase the same kit. Thanks for taking the time to share this great content.
Good video. After my experience with the weisco piston in the yz250 I would never ever ever use one again
So far no problems for us, my son doesnt race or abuse the bike much, its mainly just driving around the farm and a few small jumps on the track I made for him.
thanks for the help 👍
So the arrow needs to point towards the front of the bike?
Yes thats right.
Will this work for a 2002 yz 85 ?
Sure, YZ85 stayed virtually the same for many years.
Did you tighten the kick start all the way ?
Yes, bought a shorter (I want to say 3/4-1" bolt) and washer and tightened it up all the way, that kicker is pretty worn out at the pivot point which is why its rattling around in the video.
What are the torque specs on the cylinder and head?
Cylinder 20ft/lb, Head 22ft/lb
how do you know when an engine is broken in?
Hi Jack, the manual will list the break in procedure for different engines. This YZ 85 is as follows...
1. Use 15:1 oil mixture for break in.
2. 1 hour of break in if replacing the cylinder or crankshaft assemblies.
3. 30 min if replacing piston, ring or gears.
4. Operate the bike at half throttle or less for the times listed.
That's all that's required for normal break in periods after that you can go all out safely.
Schneb so if i turn up the idle and just leave it, it will be good?
Jack AD that's usually what I do
Schneb thanks
Good stuff!
Is up and down play normal
No, thats not good. Any up and down play means you have a bearing gone and the motor is in need of a rebuild either top or bottom depending on where the play is.
Hey I have a 04 yz 85 an it like extreme easy to kick almost to the point where u would thing it's out of wack or has no compression is that normal cause it still fires right up
This one is relatively easy to kick, kids struggle with it a bit. Yours may be low on compression and since it is a 13 yr old bike I wouldn't doubt pretty worn out you may want to consider new rings. They are really easy to do on this machine, its literally an hour long job and you don't even need to pull the engine to do it.
Schneb what should I torque it to
which torque are we talking about here? head bolts are 22ft lbs, or 30Nm.
Schneb the ones that hold the jug on
An my gears feel like they aren't doing anything when shifted it usually clicks I dropped the motor on the floor not hard but enough to hear do u think something could have pop loose
Sounds like your from Alberta
is there a way I can contact you somehow
What can I do for ya?
Schneb is it hard to rebuild the top end on a 2 stroke? (My first time )and any pointers? /tips
Jake Allen check the gap on the the piston rings make sure the piston is facing the right way and make sure the head inst fucked and I would put new spark plug and oils
Cuál es el precio de la máquina
If the piston was like that a fucked you would need a new head bc it’s probably fucked to then the bike will start running like a diesel all the small bits on the head are gonna glow red and start making the bike spark without the spark plug and gonna get worse
Did you graduate high school? It’s not y seco its wiesco it pronounces the way it’s spelled.
when you rebuild engine you must break in no ?
yes, any rebuild should have a break in period. Thats mainly why its smoking as heavily at the start, extra oil and gentle riding (my son was scared of it anyway so that wasnt a problem).
nice :) thanks for answer
1:16 had to put the camera down, this is a two handed job
