  • A few years ago, fans with this 3 blade petal prop started surfacing on the market. I figured they were probably obnoxiously loud and didn't move much air so I avoided them. There didn't seem to be any videos of them out there yet, and eventually the curiosity got the better of me and I purchased one.
    Much to my surprise, the air movement is decent and the noise level is extremely reasonable. The aerodynamics of the guards seems to be correct. I think it may even move more air and make less noise than the 5-blade models.
    Unfortunately, there seem to be pretty serious quality control issues. The blade is severely out of balance, causing the fan to shake excessively on the higher speed. Additionally the bearings seem to be severely lacking lubrication, or perhaps are out of alignment. This is odd--one of the few things Lasko seems to get consistently correct over the last few decades is motors with decent bearings and adequate lubrication.
    I will dismantle the unit and see if I can get the motor to operate more freely and balance the blade to a more acceptable margin of error. If I can correct those two things, then this may end up being a perfectly decent fan, with the major caveat of it not being ready to use right out of the box, which is completely unsatisfactory.

    Oodly enough, I got the same exact fan from Lasko and mine is just fine, but my last box fan that I bought from lasko is having the same issue that this fan is having. A TOTALLY off balanced blade. But I've had this particular lasko fan for almost 3 years now and I love mine alot. Also noticed the bearing in yours are alittle dry (my guess) because the blade almost comes to an instant stop when you turn it off. Mine slows down alittle longer then yours. I guess sometimes youll get a good one and a bad one. Mines been on for atleast 2 weeks straight to keep the air moving since my windows are open and its been working remarkably well.

    I have two of these now, they’re decent fans as you said. However the balance and bearing problems, I don’t understand why they have the bearing problems but it’s a hit or miss as the same one with the balance issue also has the bad bearings. The other works perfect without any intervention. The other I used drywall screws to balance it on the floor using the nipple on the front of the blade hub. I then screwed those into the inner hub cooling fins at a ridiculous angle and that should be a good permanent fix. I’d do that. The bearings on the other hand I have no idea, I oiled mine and they barely improved, yes I took it completely apart and oiled the wicks and both sides of the shaft before reinstalling. Hope this helps!

      I like to use globs of hot glue on the inside of the hub for balancing weight.

    I got two of these a while back in the trash up the street from my house (same fan but the white version). One of them had a bad motor (likely the thermal fuse, but the windings were quite black) and the other one worked, but was really dirty and had a smashed up base. I was able to make a single good fan out of the two. It preforms okay, seems not to have a balance issue like yours does, but there is no doubt that it is a cheaply made product. It does a good job at being a back deck fan at parties and such where I wouldn't want to risk a vintage fan.

      Surprisingly this is quiet enough where I could probably use it somewhere in the house. Otherwise these are the kind of fans I would in the garage or outside when needed.

    1:41 while the components may not be made in the USA. It is very true that the fans are still assembled here in the US. I don’t live far from their plant in Fort Worth Texas. I know someone that used to work there as well.

    i smashed one of these but in white. broken right out of the box and was incredibly noisy and shaky when i first tested it. maybe it was the A20100 model instead of the A20107. very cheap plastic but overall a decent product for the average consumer

    I had that initial thought too. You know, "This can't be all that good if the 3733 has 5 blades and performs like it does and this only has 3....." It also made me curious because it reminded me of the last generation Lakewood Kool Operator before they went bankrupt, like you mentioned. I suspect that this is designed to be the base model air circulator, just like how the 3733 is the base model box fan.
    Edit: On closer inspection, the blade hub seems to have the same hole that the Wind Machine and Power Plus box fans have. This may have a steeper pitch than the 3733 blade set, which would explain why the performance is better.

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  Рік тому +1

      The blade on this appears very thin, I think it is most comparable to the 3733 blade. The increased performance is going to be a combination of the circular guard pattern and 3 blades instead of 5.

    This is a fan that has intrigued me for a while as well. I've been wanting to get one for a long time but the price was prohibitively expensive last I saw them. Knowing they perform well, I will probably look for one at some point.
    The balance on that fan is absurd! I don't know what the deal is with Lasko and blade balance, but it's often deplorable and there's really no excuse for it.
    If you don't mind, what store or website did you purchase this from?

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  Рік тому

      I really don't understand what the deal is with Lasko/Air King's blade balance. If their fans were balanced it would solve the majority of the complaints I have with the brand, especially the Air King models.
      I got this one from the local The Home Depot.

    This does resemble the older Lakewood cool operator lol. The blade set is a little odd but if the balance was better as well as the motor needing servicing this would be a fine fan in my opinion. The switch being on the center of the back can be a little aggravating particularly to being in use in a window , but the power cord being unusually longer is less of a nuisance being in any place of the house . I enjoyed the video and I hope you can get the balance issue corrected.

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  Рік тому +2

      I would have preferred the switch be at the top, but that's not a huge deal to me. If the balance was good, this would be much more satisfactory. Seems to be a very consistent issue with Lasko, and especially Air Queen, branded models.

    Forgive me if I would be fixing to make a mistake, but I think this fan was previously (or still is) branded as Cyclone instead of Air Circulator for several years and used the 3 blade blade, so I don't think it's all that new of a creation.
    It must be done to perform a putting of this blade on the 3733 to see exact performance comparisons, as the round guard on this one would affect aerodynamics.

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  Рік тому

      I showed a Cyclone model last year, it has 5 blades and is considerably more chunky than this thing is. There may be a Cyclone model with the 3 blades, I'm not sure. I don't follow the modern products much. I only got this one because it happened to surface at a local store, I've seen these 3 blade units for a few years now in pictures, but this is the first year I've seen them in the store.
      I agree, multiple blade swaps are in order here.
