I was on Lake Baikal in 2017. The Russians have a legend that the locals take seriously. Legend says that at the bottom of Lake Baikal there is a world tree, which is guarded by a very ancient spirit. This spirit is neither good nor evil, but it can help you find the path and guide you or sink you to the bottom of the lake, depending on your goals and intentions. The Russians have trees tied with ribbons along the edge of Lake Baikal. The world tree itself for them means the place where everyone came from and where they all go. It is also a symbol of their family, something sacred to their ancestors. This is how I understood it.
