I Bought a FILTHY Non-Running Porsche Boxster at Auction! Let's Fix It!

- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- I bought a non running 1999 Porsche Boxster for dirt cheap sight unseen at Copart salvage auction. I fixed it in just 20 minutes for FREE in the auction parking lot then proceeded to drive it for the first time.
When I first saw the car, it was in non-running condition and had been sitting for years. But despite its rough exterior and lack of functioning, I saw potential in this vehicle and decided to take a chance on it.
Through some hard work and determination, I was able to fix up the car DIY style and get it running for the first time in years. It wasn't easy, but the satisfaction of breathing life back into this classic Porsche made it all worth it.
In the video, I take you through the process of fixing up the car, from identifying and repairing the issues to getting it back on the road. I also share some of the unique features and details of the 1999 Porsche Boxster, as well as my thoughts on what makes this car a true gem.
Overall, this is a fun and rewarding project that I'm excited to share with all of you. If you're a fan of classic cars or just love a good DIY fixer-upper story, then be sure to check out the video!

Thanks everyone for all the support of these daily uploads. Should we keep them goin?? We still have a lot of cars to reveal 🤫
I know You feel obliged to wear expensive wrist watches to match with the beautiful cars you deal with. But you did right not to wear one for this car pick up job. Nowadays we got so many things telling us the time. Like the movile phone. Your red C5 was almost as dirty.
0:22 what is going on with that headrest? ooof
Mate, you never connect a jump pack to the + and -. You connect the positive and then, to connect the negative, you connect it to any bare metal on the chassis. OR like u did, remove the terminals. Else the dead battery is just drinking up your current if u connect like u did first.
i want like 50 of them...! thanks again for your great videos
I'd love to include myself to your giveaways. But I don't have IG and I'm not going to get it just for your giveaways.
Please, less talking and excessive drama and more content.
“Ok, enough of me talking!”
Guess not.
Chill bro he's excited
Precisely why I watch scraplife garage
Amen
I would be even more excited 🤷♂️
Before starting the car you should have checked the engine fluids, that is what I would do because that car looks like it has been sitting still for a long time and it is not known if the previous owner did good maintenance on it
I've had my 98 Boxster for a full decade now. Bought it back in March of 2013.
I do pretty much all of my own mechanical work on it.
Had no idea that release cable was up inside the fender liner. Just haven't ever needed it!
It's always gratifying to learn something new.
EDIT: The thing with the hood latches not pulling up is also news to me. I am seriously loving this.
If it helps at all, that tick sounds exactly like mine. If I leave it sitting for a couple weeks or more it will do it for a few moments at startup and then settle down. Been that way the whole time I've had it. I just assume it's what you thought with the oil working its way through after sitting for a while.
The 99 did not suffer from
IMS bearing issues to the same extent as later models.
Your color is Arena Red. With a grey top. It is more commonly over savannah beige with a black top, but it is still a superb color.
When hooking up a battery always connect positive cable to battery first
Autozone should have been before the car wash to check/replace battery [and check alternator, after that.] That way you avoid being stuck & needing a jumpstart. Dirt is not an issue. Power and fluids are.
The main engine bearings on certain years will break apart causing metal shavings to destroying the engine. There is a bearing replacement if you catch it before the bearing gives.
I remember years ago I bought a pristine boxter from copart. I had all the same problems you just had, but once I got past all this same stuff it was a great car.
you should do a video on how to look for auction vehicles. I would love to see how you do it and what exactly do you look for when buying for an auction car or what sites do I search them on,
yeah i would have bought it just for parts. so glad you saved it!!!! really nice color too!! it will live the second part of its life with a new owner :)
You obviously do not know the difference between early versions and later versions, you do not know you do not start an engine before checking oil ! And you pressure wash a soft top ? You pressure wash windows from bottom to the top rubbers ! Absolutely crazy !
Your coolant level sensor was going off because your expansion tank is most likely blown. Same exact thing happened to me a month ago, light and everything
Same here
Thanks! So what was your solution? Replacing the expansion tank, sensor or you just have added some coolant liquid? How much did it cost? Greetings from Germany!
Love your work and love these cars. I have a '97 "first run". Loved then stored, I was lucky enough to find her. Then do the sorting.
I'm a bit shocked you didn't check the oil level prior to starting. Who knows -- there might be little or no oil in the crank case! I know, you couldn't get access... but after you found out on the Internet the lock/unlock reset trick, that would've worked without the engine running.
How did you ever turn buying cars into a UA-cam content created channel! Crazy.
great content. but seriously, not checking coolant and oil before you drive it anywhere seems odd.
Funny I know they dont look that similar but at auto zone thought that red car was your. Wow that cleaned up.
There is a 2001 Porsche Boxster at Alabama Copart unknown mileage doesn't show if it runs or drives and I think that's because the battery is dead. The current bid is $1950. If anyone is in Dallas and interested in seeing me work on this fun project reply back in the comments!
$69 for a new battery? That seems extremely low. I just bought a battery and it was $200.
Yea he got a 2002 price
Nope valuecraft autozone is MAD cheap
good to know
Last one I bought was $270
No joke..$175 for a cheap battery a couple weeks ago.
Im shocked that theres not 20 local car dealer ships that know the price of boxter parts and where the emergency hood release is trying to purchase this car.
Sasha looks like a nice companion for a supercar drive trip, is she good with a spanner? What I think of the noise is that it sounds very expensive. And you need to turn off the engine until you can change or at least top up oil. I sure am curious know how much the wheels alone are worth?!
How did you sprinkle the dust on so evenly?
hey there buddy, you made a great purchase in that Porsche the color is so beautiful, best of luck with ur new purchase
Fingers crossed!
If you need Porsche maintenance, try Zuffenhausen. Should be a stones throw form you. Mr Rosegay is the Porsche whisperer :)
I was dreaming of this car whole life, in my country its sells overpriced ($10k-$15k for bad condition car), so maintenance is very expensive regarding salaries, but you buy it for nothing and in a good visual shape! shiiiiiiit man you are lucky)
@Eddie Murphy the kid got your Boxter running! 😂🤣😂
damn that car was enjoyed by somebody, and it shall be enjoyed some more!
Know you've just told all the thieves how to open the boot, well done
Yep, always an idiot around more interested in their own blather than social conscience
if she is going to stamford let HER fix it up !!
The jump post was pushed into the fuse box and falls back behind
Bro that things dirty from the start but now it looks nice and clean
No... this guy's a blast
Good clean and a 3 spoke wheel and would be a nice buy for someone
GREAT VIDEO, I REALLY ENJOYED IT, LOOKING FORWARD TO THR NEXT VIDEOS, PERTAINING TO THIS CAR.LOL
Glad u went to Autozone I work at Autozone
Trade you my 2006 Cayenne S Titanium for it. I had a 2004 Boxster for a few years before moving up to the Cayenne to pull a boat. No longer have the boat. 2006 Titanium models are an alloy chassis that unlike other Porsche, won't rust. Fully updated cooling system and driveshaft so all kinks worked out. Just the big V8 drinks more gas than the local town drunk so not driven as much anymore.
Also oil is the engines life blood and you can at least tell condition or semi level or that it has "some" oil in it....also maybe let it run for a few then shut off quick and checkout oil and re jump? If dont have a multimeter or super expensive battery tester that can check charging system you have no clue if the things even charging anyways....to me oil is wayy more important then having go re jump the thing and just keep it running...
From the uk we have a cigarette lighter adapter that plugs in a jump pack to open the boot lid
Should’ve changed oil and filter
The ticking is just the oil running through the valve pipe
Lifter tick or spun bearing
That’s a awesome car! Happy Christmas! Your really lucky..?
Thanks! You too!
Change the oil and add a quart of Rislone.
Oh, I bid for this one.
While at Autozone, did you check the fluid levels? Run a diagnostic on the overheating light?
Congratulations to you
cant wait for part 2
😅uff great buy 🎉 😁💪🏻 hello from 🇵🇷
Great find
That battery was dirt cheap. Last time a few months ago we got a battery $150.
GET ON WITH IT!!!!
3:11 that's correct 😂😂😂
Noise is the waterpump
Unfortunately it's the 2.7 lt version because if it was the 3.2 was really an outstanding treasure
Awesome score! Not a normal thing from Copart.
You forgot the seatbelt light is on. Means the battery is working all along.
That's a great deal 😁
I love a boxster
Well done 👍 brilliant job
"If i Fail is still UA-cam content " LOL
The king of stalling lol
Did anyone ever teach you how to wash car? Start at the top and wash your way down the car!
Hit up detail garage in Mesa, we would be stoked to do a detail
Hi, I recently bought my first car and it is a Porsche Boxter 986 (2002). I did a huge amount of work with my own hands, restored all the plastic in the interior, cleaned the radiators, repaired the cooling system and much more... but unfortunately, after replacing the battery in the car and after replacing the battery in the electronic key, the car stopped responding to the electronic key.( (the light comes on when pressed and the battery has already been replaced twice, perhaps you know how to make the car see the electronic key again?
Its a manual push it jump in pop clutch.
i sure wish i could find a good one for that money i have always wanted a porsche (one day )
I'd love to get in a porsche
the noise sounded like a lifter
1st stop "auto Zone". Not 2nd stop.
Just buy the battery. Don't even chance it across death valley.
I gave $1200 for mine runs drives 91,000 original miles currently on Facebook for sale
I am a Porsche fan mainly Carrera's, definitely NOT Boxsters, I would have to think about it for free!
Brilliant
Here's the deal .... Been there, done that twice ... If you don't drive these for a month or so, the vampire electrical devices in the car WILL drain the battery. If it's not your daily, keep it on a smart charger. Once the battery is dead, you get to where this guy is. You need battery power to open the front trunk but you can't jump the battery since it is in the front trunk. Stalemate. There are maybe three tricks on the internet to try. Jumping the Row 3 Number 3 fuse worked for me once but the next time it didn't. Porsche didn't put the post into the fuse box you thought was missing until 2001 or 2. Some cars have that emergency pull cable, mine didn't. My hood also had a sticky latch so pulling the cable he did in this video wouldn't work. Smart chargers won't charge through the cigar lighter since they need a minimum voltage to work which you don't have. And yes, the lever in the early Boxsters need power even though they seem to be manual. The early year car levers have rods that keep the levers from moving. When you have power, they pull out and you can move the lever. After trying every trick on the internet without success, I borrowed a portable starter battery box with a cable that would plug into the OBD2 port. VOILA !!! Immediately opened. Charged up the battery (slowly) and all was well. But then it failed the smog test. That is what happened to this car I'm sure. Draining the battery gives you an engine code and you will fail the Smog Test. There is a long procedure you can find on the internet to clear the code. You have to drive for 30 or 45 minutes at like 35 mph then the same at 65 mph all without going above I think it is 3000 rpm. If you have a track to do this on great. But I tried all day and there was always cars in my way to slow me down or I would have to speed up so that didn't happen. But just by driving it at all speeds for several hours over two days, it extinguished the code and I passed code. So here's the deal. Keep the car on a smart charger if you don't drive it regularly. Get a portable start battery with a cable that plugs into the OBD2 port for if you screw up. Drive it like hell for a few days before you try to smog it or it will throw a code. And enjoy. These cars are one of the cheap secrets of the fun car world.
This guy knows his stuff
Or put the jump pack terminal on the positive on the starter motor and the negative on the chassis .....easy
Chain tensioner failure is a problem with many Boxsters and Boxsters and the 996s in the early 2000s had problems with IMS (intermediate shaft) bearing failures and RMS (rear main seal) issues.
As much as I like Boxsters, those things have kept me from buying one. By the way, I would never start a car in that situation without first checking the oil level.
Rear Main Seal and IMS can be taken care of at the same time. For the amount of fun a Boxster is and for how inexpensive they are for a Porsche I wouldnt let those two things stop you. I didn't and love mine. I have a 2004 that I have had for 9 years and it is in awesome shape. Looks like it is maybe 2 years old condition wise. As with any car, you gotta keep up on the little things or you will soon be overwhelmed with issues.
@@MDQDZINE2 years old
Riiiiiight
I admire your attempt at working on a German car like this but I would at least change the oil before running and fresh gas as well as a few other things. Also washing the car before rubbing the dirt into the body or glass is always smart. That being said I appreciate your passion
He was in a junkyard. What else should he do? :)
Chazz, I know it's sometimes hard to understand him because he talks fast. What he said: advised people not to do what he did, but put their new purchase on a truck/trailer and bring it back to their shop, Also, he said more than once that he couldn't get the rear hatch open so he couldn't check the oil. Couldn't wash the car either because he's in a junkyard. He's also done another video after this one where he does clean up the car, change the fluids and then drives it.
@@danielfl.9347 not do what he did? Was laughing when he was talking about the oil making that clicking sound 😂😂😂
An amateur without doubt. How many cars has he damaged and not posted to YT?
I love it when someone points out this guy is an idiot then commends him for his effort.
Brave soul to drive it all the way home 1,000+ miles. Obviously (and glad) you made it back ok. Looking forward to seeing the trip recap video.
Just a quick note, always place the positive cable on the battery first and the negative on a good ground not the battery.
that car needs new oil and filters -- every mile ran with old oil will be inflicting damage
These Boxsters are so good, just picked my 6 speed S up for four grand. Has 189,000 miles still runs like a champ.
Hey, how's it a year on? Any annoying or costly repairs?
maybe if you calm down and focus
11:08 crihst stop talking and start the car.
You really talk to much.
The early 986, 97-99, have a double row IMS and don’t fail like the later single row IMS in the 2000-2005 boxsters. I have a 99 and it’s been nothing but pure joy and a pleasure to own. These cars easily go 200k+ miles with just normal maintenance and they are very easy to maintain. Keep up with oil changes and these cars will just keep going. You really have to drive one to understand but then u will really want one. Pure analog bliss that makes a symphony behind your ears
Got a 99 myself. I did install a new aftermarket HD IMS when I did the clutch. Since it was a black eye for early Boxsters, I wanted to rest my mind plus it makes for great resale value. Also a must have is to swap out the top with the rear glass.
The worst thing is selling a Porsche that runs beautifully like Dr P designed to a peasant who can’t afford to fix it if it went wrong so they pore over the maintenance trying to find fault and want a 5 grand Porsche to have full opc history .
Pure scumbags
greatest example of dumb luck! Lol
You boys def have a great eye for those cars. Congrats on another win. Hope the drive home is a winner as well.
The flashing light on the coolant temp gauge is because the coolant level is low.
"Don't do this unless you know your stuff" 😂
Looked everything up on UA-cam.... "stuff"= know how to spell when searching fixes? 19:38
There is nothing good about moving these cars with those fork lifts. The morons at CO-PART ruptured my fuel tank in my 05 dodge 3500 while it was in there yard. Yes the tank was full 35 gallons of diesel fuel wasted and 1000 dollars in damage. Horrible business practices
That flashing red light next to the temperature gauge is 'low coolant' light.
Yeah that generation doesn't have the emergency battery jump. You need to pull the handle harder. It's possibly locked electronically. You're so lucky and I'm very jelly about that cayenne turbo s and this 986 you got!
are you gonna restore the car or just keep talking ?
Awesome project, just picked up a clean title running 986 for super cheap as well so looking forward to seeing how it turns out!
Hope you enjoy it!
I just grabbed an 01 for 5k with IMS done but a cosmetic nightmare
@poormansporsche744 nice! Mine is the same, except its a 97 and i got it for 3k but it was cheap for a reason haha
I just got a 2000 for 5k that I’m starting as a project. Definitely gonna need some work though.
Why does your headrest have cellulite?
sounds like a cylinder score issue common in the porsche comunity hope they didn't scam you!
it will over heat as the cylinders r scratching more and more bearings ect will heat up engine seals losen up than overheat
the knocking sounded like an exhaust leak, it probably went away when it warmed up.
Hey Motortmouth, Skip the caffeine, video is annoying as hell.
9:28 Trust me, I get exactly how hyped you are, your hand holding the phone when you found that cable and it worked, that it was trembling is the understatement of the century, this one or the last.
You sure do love to talk.
Dude you are a drama queen. Also I can't believe you didn't check the fluids before starting this thing up. If you were a car guy this would have been more entertaining to watch.
He's just a rich trust fund kid.
