Thank you for saying ‘One persons dry winter rest is not another’s!’ When people say don’t water at all, many are assuming 50-60% humidity, not realizing that those of us with cold winters, are dealing with 25-35% humidity. You kind of have to feel your way through to the correct amount of water or mist, since most of us will end up with fungus and mold in our house if we try to keep it that humid in the winter!😊
Love your vids Matthew - and in this one, I was delighted to see you have a Lycaste Aromatica. I had a specimen-size plant for about 20 years and it is one of my all-time favourites, producing many dozens of blooms annually. I especially loved its strong, room-filling cinnamon fragrance. Hoping to find another later this year.
Such gorgeous blooms!! That loddigesii hybrid is stunning!! Love the way you explain things and give your insights into where specific orchids come from and how they grow in situ.
I’m so happy to see you’ve managed to keep your lycaste aromatica alive. I killed mine dead as a door nail. I may have to try again just to prove I can grow one.
Great video again! I’m in Brisbane Qld & my Den. Bohemian Rap. grows like a weed. It’s hanging in a shade house where temps. are 7degC min. in winter. I just drizzle a bit of water on it once a week thru winter until buds appear.
Hi, how often are you watering in this hot Melbourne weather? Do you think you might do a watering technique video one day? Also do you keep a catalogue of your plants or just tags like me 😂 Lots of questions Matthew
Twice a day at the moment! Some spots get more light and therefore dry faster though. And a few people have asked about a watering video - to be honest I'm not sure there's much I can say! I use a hose. Or a watering can! I'll think about a possible format. And yes, I have an inventory list I can check on my phone if I see something I think I can't live without.
That’s a good idea to put them on the phone rather than a book so photos are on hand as well. Do you use any specific app or just photos? I think with watering people are interested in the volume of water like running out of pots etc. It’s always of interest to see a visual technique as opposed to reading. Thankyou for all the effort you put into sharing your knowledge & love of orchids
Hello Matthew It is winter here this morning we are at -11 which is better than early this week. Our temp was -23 to -26. Now I have 3 tulomnia's they are 2 years old not doing anything. They look healthy Any advice? On growing them and getting them to flower Thank you Debbie from Canada
Hi Debbie - alas no! I don't have any Tolumnias so can't help. The basics of orchid care are always light -water - temperature so adjusting those might help. I know Roger at www.youtube.com/@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai has some good Tolumnia care videos. Good luck!
Oooh, i love that dendrobium!! I just picked up 2 new to me species. Coelia bella and Bifreneria harrisoniana, do you have any experience with those? Edit: derp, just remembered you just did a video on bifrenaria 🙄 sorry, old age
Hi from NJ, USA. POI about the Lycaste. I've read that the sharp points arising from the pb prevent any critters from chewing on them. Quite needle-like and it hurts. We're in a deep freeze! Stay well.
I also like terracotta, but I am a newbie, so could I ask why do you drill holes in them? Also, where I am in South Africa, we have more or less the same temperatures, what would be the best Tolumnia medium?
Most orchids are epiphytes in their wild species form and as such the roots are often quite exposed to air, light and moisture. In pot culture you want to try and replicate that so the more air and light you can get to the roots the better, hence the holes! I don't grow Tolumnias but from what I gather mounting them gives the best results. Roger at www.youtube.com/@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai has some good Tolumnia care videos. Good luck!
@@helloplantlovers dang... I always forget this. So no one can send you a plant. That is indeed, sad. But I'm sure that usitana will grace you with her presence once again, someday. Absolutely amazing plant. So classical and elegant in its colors. I love it.
@@LauraStansfield-tw7xb Hmmm...I'm madly manifesting. It might be one of those plants I'll have to try via a flask (weirdly you CAN import flasks into Australia!)
Thank you for your presentations of the blooms. Every time I feel joy and wonder I even get to smell them. Magic
Thanks for watching!
Thanks lovely blooms Mathew, your always so informative. Roll on Spring in the Uk, I have high hopes😅
Thanks for watching!

@ An excel spreadsheet - no photos.
WOW so beautiful ! What are those brown spots on leaves on Jannine Banks, I get those too and wondering what it is? I'm new to orchids 🙂🌸💕
Its an old leaf and a bit of sun damage I think.
@helloplantlovers Ok, Thank you 😊

Why cant you get usitana again?? Very popular in the US, where i live. One of my favorite in the genus. Happy to help in this regard if i can. Lmk

Because they are not common in Australia and you cannot import live plant material into the country.

Hi Mathew do you grow pendulous cymbidiums in baskets.? Thanks
No I don't - mostly because I have no where to hang them! If I did....I would. It is difficult to display them well otherwise.
When you say ‘cool orchids’, do you mean that they need a cold period to bloom or do you mean they can tolerate cold temperatures?
Thank you!
One often leads to the other really; an orchid that can take cooler temps will often need that seasonal shift to flower.
