Brave woman who called out the Catholic Church and was shamed for it
And has been proven right time and time again.
Yes, and this was back in the early 90s, long before the rest of the world called the Catholic Church out.
Prince beat the shit out of her.
More likely to be a victim of SA in an elementary school than a church.
@@timhaas6021 might be down to attendance declining..statistics wise (†).
Or, I'd say, whitewhashing...
Strange comment. Why ?
She doesn't even look like she's trying to sing ... she just sings. Her voice is amazing, especially in this song.
Holy crap, shocked that you said she shows no emotion in that video! It’s the pure emotion in her face the whole time that always keeps me transfixed.
She’s one of a kind and worth your attention. The first two albums were amazing, but she NEVER had the backing she deserved. Her story is truly tragic. Great voice, strong writing, powerful messages.
Prince wrote it but never formally released it. As the story goes, the first time he heard Sinead he said that's the voice this song has been waiting for. He approached her to record it, which speaks volumes!
Hey guy' check out her performance at the grammys where she had Public Enemy's crest tattooed on the side of her head in protest of them not being nominated. A true artist who stood up for beliefs.
Sinead and Delores are 2 of the most beautiful Eire voices my ears have ever heard
Delores refers to Delores O'Riordan, the singer from The Cranberries, fyi.
I cry like a baby every time I hear this song …. Powerful
Me too! Actually, I remember driving home from an old boyfriends house knowing it was over and this song came on the radio. It's crazy what music can do to you. It can take you right back to a moment in time.
To me, her face expresses how it feels to be in mourning. After the death of a loved one, I recall feeling like I was sleep walking. Her face reminds me of those days spent in mourning. Love her voice.
I read that her mother had died not long before she did this song, and she tapped into that emotion during this performance. That's why she was crying.
Sinead sang on Saturday Night Live and during her performance, she tore up a picture of the pope. That was kind of the end of it for Sinead. And yes, she is crying in the video. My understanding is she had a very tumultuous, abusive relationship with her mother, and was working on mending it. Her mother was killed in a car accident, and when she sings about 'all the flowers that you planted mama in the backyard', you see the tears come. Prince may have written the song, but it belongs to Sinead. And Prince is damn lucky that she made this song known worldwide.
Iconic. Beautiful song, beautiful but troubled lady. Her name is pronounced Shin-ade.
"She shows no emotion"? 𝐇𝐮𝐡? And no, they didn't "just give her" the song.
I know, I thought the same thing. "Blank face"? I just think he missed the entirety of the whole song.
Right? WTF!!!
Sinead O’ Connor got canceled in 1992, WAY before canceling a person was a “thing”.
The “thing” she did was have the audacity to speak the truth about the corruption and child abuse going on within the Catholic Church and perpetrated by many Catholic priests.
She performed on SNL In October of 1992, as many artists do when they have a new album dropping or a new single. Her first song she performed went smoothly but at the end of the show she performed another song and at the last minute she changed the song she would sing at the end of the show to the song “War”. At the end of her performance of “War” she held up a picture of the Pope, tore it in half and said, “Fight the real enemy”.
That statement and the act of tearing the photo of the Pope in half resulted in her being banned for life from Saturday Night Live and canceled and all but forgotten by the masses.
You say cancelled - for many of us, this just made her even more awesome. A true artist and such passion and honesty.
Prince wrote it but it belongs to Sinead.
RIP to the goddess. 🕊💔✊🏽
This is when I learned crying is contagious.
Prince was a hater. His family didn’t even let her use it for her docu. He tried some weird things on her when she was in his home and he tried to force her to sing it how he wanted, she ran of in the middle of the night and was found by police walking by the high way.
She also never allowed music industry to use her beauty to sell her records. That’s why she shaved her head bold. But she was still beautifull, one of the most underrated voices, tragedy keeps following her all her life, after a bad abusive childhood and loosing her mum at a young age she recently lost her son, last year ; suicide. She is Sufi Muslim now I believe and found some peace.
I love Prince. But he was terrible for that. 😢

No emotion? Wow. All I see when I see this is her subtle indications of pain. It's actually amazing. I guess maybe it shows how someone can be influenced by pre-information on how they see something. Anyway cool reaction.
She called out the Catholic Church when it wasn't cool to do so, especially in the US. She tore up a photo of Pope John Paul II on Saturday Night Live as a protest to all the child abuse at the hands of priest's and nun's. I'm from Ireland and can remember the majority of us praising her, she was a warrior, a true fighting Irish :)
I think you would dig the song Mandinka, it was her first hit and everyone sat up when she came on the scene.
At the same time I wouldn't dive too much into her unless you dig the voice. Honest reaction as usual.
Yes to Mandinka.
I also like "Stretched on your grave".
She appears on some great collabs too.
Her rendition of Danny Boy can drop you right to your knees. Her talent cannot be overstated.
RIP Sinead :(
It's crazy how she became a "Priest" for some Catholic sect after all that hullabaloo!!.😅
Prince wrote this song in 1984. Sinead O’Connor did this cover version in 1990. It went to no.1 in the UK charts and no.1 in 17 other countries. She tweaked the script slightly to make it a female version. The part she had tears in (All the flowers that you planted, Mama, in the backyard….) was when she was thinking about her mum in that moment, who died in a car crash in 1985. Three weeks before that accident, Sinead wanted to forgive her Mum for all the abuse she gave her. She had a very difficult life with her mum, and wanted to forgive her, but it was too late. All the other lyrics in this song (written by Prince) wasn’t about her life. She chose this song because she loved it herself.
Black Boys on Mopeds is my favorite song by her, but this is a classic cover.
Agree. Beautiful performance.
This was everywhere back then, and when music tv channels were all music all the time
Yes, she is crying towards the end of the song. Another terrific song and reaction. Thank you for sharing this.
Sinead is gone now passed away yesterday - but her Heart & Soul will live forever through her music - RIP Sinead O'Connor..!
One of the most genuine women of Ireland 🇮🇪 ❤
SHE PASSED AWAY FEW HRS AGO AT THE AGE OF 56. THREE CHILDREN SURVIVED HER. SHE DIED 18 MONTHS AFTER THE DEATH OF HER SON.
Yes, Prince wrote this song! If you listen , you can hear him in the whole song, just like a track he would record his self The lyrics are classic Prince!
She must have made prince alit of money cause it was a huge hit and she sang the heck out of it.
yes she's crying. she shot the video not long after her mother, who abused her, died. it was a very emotional moment. RIP Sinead. A person who stood up for the abused and ignored.
That tear😢... If everyone knew the reason! It was raw, real , and directly from her soul. Lady, u were my first ever crush, influence, and I UNDERSTOOD EVERYTHING U STOOD FOR..... god bless, ur with Ur baby and ur mama now! God I loved u so much 😢❤ I understood u, but not many did ✌️🎹🙏🏻💪.Wish I was as brave as you! The old tee is comin out. I salute u Shuhada Davitt 💔💔💔💔
What a pretty looking woman , I love her music.
i think her best song is 'emperor's new clothes'.
Saw her at the royal Albert hall - didn't particularly want to but man she took my breath away. Sang A cappella - stunning will never forget it 👌👌👌 still ain't much for her though 😂
Another vote for you to react to her song "Black Boys on Mopeds" - she also has an amazing album of reggae covers called "Throw Down Your Arms", and from that I would recommend "Downpressor Man".
"Blank face?" Wow, dude. Look at her eyes, the tremble in her chin. That is pain personified. How do you not see that?
You couldn't see the emotion in her eyes and pain in her voice? She was a very genuine lady who felt deeply and passionately, and that's what got her into trouble. When she was on Saturday Night Live decades ago she tore up a picture of the pope in protest of his protection of child abusing priests. She cared and it was important to her because she had been terribly abused as a child herself. Many didn't understand her actions back then but since those days the abuses within the church have come to light, and she helped to shine a light into that darkness. Her 17 year old son who was the light in her life, took his own life a little over a year ago. She was devastated and never recovered emotionally. Now her sweetly sensitive voice has been silenced. I'm a big Prince fan but nothing compares to Sinead and her version of his song. RIP dear brave lady
The Lion and The Cobra is one of the best albums ever produced.
She didn't destroy her career. She got political for some time which pissed off some folks, but was cheered by many others. Eventually, she just got tired of the limelight, backed away from it all, and eventually retired. I know she also struggled with depression if I recall correctly.
Back in the day. Newly married and driving down a long, flat, dark Florida road. A few minutes of just floating. Was beautiful
Prince and Rosie Gaines did this song live and there was a live version on The B-sides” CD set.
She scarficed her career on SNL by protesting at the cover up of sexual abuse by the Catholic Church...the world owes her an apology because she was so right😪
She is 100% dignity. RIP
Check out
Chris Cornell - "Nothing Compares 2 U" (Prince cover ) [Live @ SiriusXM] | Lithium
It is the best version of the song in my opinion.
YES!!! Chris KILLS IT!!!🔥🔥🔥
man, you are really hitting on some good stuff lately!!!! i see you did "i'd love to change the world" too! great choices. keep it up. try maria muldaur, midnight at the oasis, live.
I appreciate that!
She was crying because she changed to lyric to all the flowers that you planted mama .. all died when you went away. This recording was done just after her mother died
A tragic life...... and her son died recently from suicide 😥✌️
Chris Cornell also done a great version of this.
A classic!
Thank you. Her first album "The Lion and the Cobra" (1987) is still my favourite.
Troy ( live ) by Sinead 👌🏼❤
Great reaction
Thank you
Wow I was in my prime then
Thanks for given me that reminder
This video was and is profound.
She declared the Pope to be her enemy..... I don't know why it did so much damage to her because the Papacy has made enemies in every generation.
Yes, thos song was written and previously covered by The Family, a Prince protégé group. It was a little more jazzy however, She still singed it best, 2nd to Prince if course. 💜🎵
check out chris Cornells cover of this song- its outstanding.
Prince didn't like that the music industry allows other artists to take another artists music and cover it. "Compulsory License Law" which allows artists through the record companies to take an artists music at will without their permission. And that doesn't exist in any other art form.
She was on Saturday Night Live she was making a speech about the pope a picture of the Pope and I said good for her yeah kind of ruined her career but I want her to start singing again she has a great voice
❤️
This is the best version of this song.!!!!😭
Prince did a good version. It’s a song that gets stuck in your head for sure. Great first line. ‘7 hours and 15 days…’
❤😊
This song was written by Prince
I guess you know by now, you can see Prince perform this song on youtube.
Yes I got a video on that coming
Tore up a picture of the Pope live on Saturday night live TV show!!!
Check out Prince’s version of Nothing Compares to U. Personally, My favorite live performance is the one at Paisley Park w/ Rosie Gaines.
...i was told she lost a boyfriend wrote that song thats why she cries .....
Chris Cornell did a version of this song.
0:20 / 3:47
Prince - Nothing Compares 2 U (Live At Paisley Park, 1999) his version is fire.
R I P
Let me suggest two other epic tearjerkers: "God give me strength" by Elvis Costello. And ... "Zombie" by The Cranberries.
She went on SNL in 1992 & tore up a pic of the Pope. Nothing compared 2 (😜) what the Catholic Church has done! 🤘😈
React to his version
Rip.
She shows no emotion??!! What video were you watching?
just to let you know it's been announced she died at 56
Great artist who never lived down her one mistake !! Ruined her forever. Feel for her
What mistake? Criticizing the Catholic Church and the sitting Pope? They had it coming, and she's been long vindicated as horror story after horror story makes the news.
Yes your right. I worded it wrong.
She was betrayed over and over.
U have to check out Chris Cornell’s version of this, he did it best!!!!!!
He wrote this. O'Connor covered it a few years later. It was part of his regular rotation during performances.
She had cute little face
She shows no emotion? The whole thing was emotion.
This is Prince's version, BIZ you will eat this up. ua-cam.com/video/YsbYMYuYOiQ/v-deo.html
One troubled soul.
Yes, WB had the rights to the song and allowed her to record it. Prince originally recorded it in 1984, then gave it to his protege group The Family who recorded it for their debut album in 1985. He re-recorded it in the early 90’s as a duet with Rosie Gaines. Personally I like his 1984 version the best.
Man, I liked The Family version.
For my money Chris Cornell did it best.
💜I prefer Prince 💜
