    Made some time this morning to catch up on your videos, and thanks for making all these informative gardening videos. You had a past vid talking about when to pick the White Pineapple, and the ones I bought from you 2 years ago are doing well. I am in south Florida, and we find the best time to pick them is when they have a nice light golden blush to them. If we pick them when you do they wouldn't even be close to ripe. Interesting how different the timing is for picking by location. Our leaves on the plant have green, with a lot of that beautiful blush color. Cheers! B.

      Glad to hear you got a pineapple to eat. It is a wonderful crop. As for Satsuma, it was excellent in California and it grows fine in Hawaii but we have the Japanese White Eye bird here. IT destroys most of the fruit by poking holes in the skin and leaving them to rot in the rain. Fairchild is a much better alternative here. The skin is harder. Page is a tangelo hybrid that is now on my favorite citrus list.

      Pineapples do not need to be place in water and they do not require rooting hormone. As a plant part, the pineapple is one of the most perfect for planting. It is wax covered to prevent dehydration and the roots are already on the stem, under the leaves.

      @@GreenGardenGuy1 I wasn't talking about pineapples.I was referring to the first part of your video when you were talking about "Plants in water" and talking about other plants such as sweet potatoes and other plants. I know pineapples don't need to be placed in water, as I've bought trunk loads of slips from you before and planted them. I'm talking about plants like Tomatoes and Peppers and Hemp. Plants that you can take cuttings from, root very well in fish tank water. I don't know, it must be the waste from the fish, but I can get cuttings to root just on there own in 3-4 days. Once they start to show roots, you plant them right then so the roots don't die. And they don't die if you don't let the roots get to established.

    • @GreenGardenGuy1
      @GreenGardenGuy1  Рік тому

      @@3000gtwelder I was of the opinion that I explained all this in the video. I must not have got my point across. Short and sweet, only novice growers start plants in water. All professionals use a media. Plants make the wrong type of root in water. Most of these die and have to start over again when put to soil. It wastes the plants energy and increases the time it takes to root well. I once rooted a sweet potato in water when I was 8 years old. That was the last time I used water and I have rooted millions of cuttings.

      If it has been around for 6 years it isn't doing well. Most pineapple fruit in 12 to 24 months. The mother plant dies at that point and it is replaced by the slips or suckers. Since your's is 6 years old we can guess they do not like drying out as much as you think and are probably out of fertilizer.

      @GreenGardenGuy1  Рік тому

      @@filipszuster8030 Pineapples are indifferent to soil types. As long as they get 1" of water per week and moderate fertilizer they grow fine. I would make no recommendations on soil nutrients without reading a soil test for your specific sight first. Do not just guess. As for Epsom salt it is good on most plants in light doses. I never use it on pineapples but I am sure it wouldn't hurt. For organic fertilizers I use chicken manure. The Nutririch brand from Stutzman egg ranch is my favorite. It is pelletized.

    • @GreenGardenGuy1
      @GreenGardenGuy1  Рік тому

      @@filipszuster8030 The only reason a person would grow from a seed is because you have made a cross and want to grow out the hybrid. We do not have pineapple seeds in Hawaii. Seeded fruit are considered low grade and HI has a premium market. The humming bird is the only native pollinator for pineapple and they are illegal here for good reason. You would have to locate fruit grown in the Caribbean to find seeds. Shop in discount houses to find these. Yes a base like soda when mixed with an acid will produce CO2. It also produces salt which is undesirable for plants. I do not mess around with "secret formulas" for plant growth. Most plants know exactly what they are doing it is humans that mess them up. Less is better. Leaving fresh fruit pulp on a seed when planting will speed germination. The fermentation stimulates the seed to sprout. Most people clean seeds so they never notice this effect.

    Lol, I have “ Started “ pineapples in water and in potting soil also spagnum moss and found good and bad in both.
    Only advantage of starting them in water is that they start well indoors in the as the water temp stay moderated and you dont have to worry about pests such as soil fungus gnats over the winter.
    I did an indoors experiment once for my youtube channel, both turned out the same… No difference.
    I would say if you live in a tropical climate… why would you ever need to start in water.

      There is absolutely no good reason to place a pineapple in water. If that was what they wanted I would find them floating between the waterlilies while swimming. There are the things plants know about what they need and then there are the things humans think plants want. They are not always the same. Aloha

      Miracle grow holds too much water. The bag for outdoor plants is made to hold even more water. If you use it indoor you could get a root rot but you will surely get an outbreak of fungus Gnats. Use something with better drainage. Miracle Death is some of the worse stuff on the market. It is the Budweiser of potting soils.

      You don't like Budweiser? Neither do I!. Lol.
      Last night, I looked on Amazon for the Kellogg Cascade G&B which you suggested. I couldn't find it on their site.
      I then went to their website. They said their availability was only in the the west and the Pacific northwest.
      I live in what they call the tri- state area along the Ohio River. It's a meeting point of Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky.
      So, I'm going to hold off my plans and go to Lowe's this weekend, if possible. I'll have to see what's available there.
      I read on the internet that pineapples prefer soil pH 4.5 to 5.5. If this is the case, couldn't I opt for throwing together some sphagnum peat moss and perlite. Add some fertilizer, then go from there.
      Or , if an anhydrous formula is needed, would some soil for cactus be suitable?
      Is there a ratio of NPK that pineapples prefer?
      Lastly, if I find a soil which has some manure ,etc... in it, wouldn't it smell bad inside my place.
      Thanks for what you do, Garden Guy. I'll be looking forward to hearing from you. After I go to Lowe's this weekend, I'll let you know what I find.

      I raised pineapples in zone 9 CA. I had to keep them in a unheated hoop house from Nov to April. They will not stand frosts and they rot in the soil is too wet in winter. I used to water only in the leaf whorls during winter. A small amount of water would trickle to the soil. Plants with wet soil were usually dead in spring.

    Question???? another one not about potting pineapples but other things. I saw what you wrote about miracle grow below.... do you recommend you use Sungrow for most starting trees or even seeds starters?

    • @GreenGardenGuy1
      @GreenGardenGuy1  Рік тому

      I am more likely to warn people against a product rather than recommend one. The potting soil you use is more important than the plant, pot or fertilizer. Avoid all discount chain soils like the plague. They have municipal waste. Avoid Disaster Grow aka Miracle Grow. It holds too much water, it's made from low grade black peat and generally causes root rots when over watered. If it is a potting soil I use products by Kellogg Cascade. G&B is a common bag from them. Most of the time I use professional growers media. I prefer Sun Grow but also use Pro Mix. Pro Mix tends to have more weeds.

    • @GreenGardenGuy1

      I seldom go into details about fertilizers because i use anything I can get my hands on. Supply chain issues are new on the Mainland but an old story in Hawaii. Keeping stock here is difficult. Nutricote 180 is good stuff and I use it. If I can get Nutricote 360 I prefer it. 360 is in hot demand here due to our rain. Half the time it is out of stock and I use 180 or Osmocote. In the field I use pelletized chicken manure and fish emulsion. I only use nutricote in the nursery.

    Decided to grow some pineapple after watching this video. I looked up white pineapple after seeing you talk about it in videos. Sugarloaf came up. The sugarloaf pineapple is already sold in a 1 gallon container. So would that sugarloaf be good in that 1 gallon container forever? Also are pineapple like a banana where you have to replant them?

    • @GreenGardenGuy1
      @GreenGardenGuy1  Рік тому

      Sugar loaf was the progenitor of the Hilo White. They are very similar. A pineapple will fruit in a gallon pot but the fruit will be small and the pot will keep falling over. I grow in the field but if I was to guess a 3 gallon squat pot would work fine. Yes, the mother plant dies when it fruits. To replace it you get one top, a few slips under the fruit and one to three basal suckers from the root area. The lower suckers will fruit in place but everything else is replanted.

    Question??? Ananas comosu bromeliad or pineapple. I have about thirty different bromeliads and note each has the prime growing location and more so water needs in the top leaves. My bromos I can tell when they need water by looking at the top leaves....but the pineapple not so much. Just how wet do the top leaves need to be? I got some bromos in trees, some growing up the chain link fence and some love cement so I know soil conditions are not an issue. So I know they need water in the leaf. Some of the bromeliads I have are in the prime with watering daily...others not so much. I have been looking for this information and can not find an answer. Just what are the leaf water needs for a pineapple?

      The only plants that professional grower would root in water are aquatic plants destine for pond culture. I have to assume that people who root stuff in water learned from grandma not from working in the horticultural industry or horticulture classes. When a plant is rooted in water the roots produced are only suitable for aquatic conditions. These roots die away when place in soil and must start over again. The fastest way to set a cutting back is start it in water. Some plants, like cacti or succulents usually die when placed in low O2 settings. I destroyed pineapple slips by soaking them in water over night to remove ants.
