  • Well hello there!
    So I walked into a Petco and was wondering what kind of selection of aquariums folks really get - are they good options or not so much?

    Thank you! I have many betta tanks with the smallest being 5.5 gallons. I was in a Pet Supplies Plus last week where they had 2 gallon betta bowls on display under their bettas. I had a conversation with the manager about 5 gallons being the minimum size for a betta. The response was, "I agree, but they're great sellers." I responded, "They are because you are selling them carrying them and marketing them for a betta. When pet stores stop carrying tiny tanks labeled for betta and selling them, manufacturers will change it. If you know and agree about the tank size then stop pushing those tanks." Ugh! Thank you for spreading the word!!!❤

    lol, i actually just left my position as aquatics specialist at my local petco. every piece of advice/knowledge you've given, i would pass on to customers as well. i would also often create my own tank starter kit bundles to display with my own product recommendations, which was a great chance to educate new aquarists! and truly, products pictures in the aquatics department is a nightmare. VERY misleading and makes the job of educating and advising people that much harder. any good aquatics specialist would hopefully feel the same, and also help customers make informed decisions

      As someone who is new to petco and stepping into the role of a senior aquatic specialist I couldn't agree more. I've already made it a large part of my daily routine to properly research and provide adequate kits for every level of aquarists. If I could I wouldn't stock those tiny tanks and work from 5 gallons upwards

    Hi Joanna. Haven't been seeing much of you lately, it seems like it's been since you two have started re-doing the fish room. I liked your little field trip to petco. Beginner hobbyists need to see it before starting out with their first tank. Hope to see you again soon. I wish you and your hubby a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. 🙏🌲🍄

    I needed an emergency hospital tank a couple weeks ago, and i ended up bringing home that 5.5 Aqueon rimless. I hated having to buy the lid separately, but at least they had them in stock. Trying to resist the temptation to turn it into a shrimp tank.

      I love my 5.5. Had to put one of my glowlight tetras in it when he developed swim bladder issues. Little guy recovered in no time, and then it was a temporary home to a betta I saw in the store that had chewed his tail to pieces. He spent a few weeks in the 5.5 before upgrading to a 10. His tail looks fantastic now lol. I couldn't find a lid tho and had to get creative using plastic craft mesh. Looks abysmal but does the job.

    Isn’t that crazy how smaller costs more? And like you, I wish they would use appropriate fish sizes for the graphic on the tank packaging. They do that for rodents too. Most of those cages are too small.

    I have never bought a kit tank if you can believe it. The closest I came was when I bought my 210, and it came with the stand, the glass canopies, the lights, and the hardware for the sump.

  • @rickbooher8224
    @rickbooher8224 5 місяців тому +1

    I like it when petco has the dollar a gallon you can save a bunch. It is a way to get aquarium a cheaper price and allows you to pick you own light, filter and accessories.
    I don't like the kits they are OK but the filter, light, lid and the accessories. They tend to be lower quality and don't last as long. They include the bare basics to set up and aquarium. Yes it will work but plan on having to replace them. So I say get the dollar a gallon deal and buy the rest accordingly and get better upgrades to them and greater durability. It also will allow you to step and have more gallons for you aquatic critters. And you end up spending about the same price as a kit or just a tad more. But you will have more gallons to work with. I understand price are major issue especially now days but I advise buy bigger than you think you need. Go to the next site up from what you was thinking and you will be happier latter on. However I do realize sometimes size and location where you are planning your aquarium may dictate the size but if possible step up to the next size up. You won't be disappointed you did latter on. I haven't figured out why a group Peta hasn't got involed with the wrong fish on the boxes of aquarium. Showing the wrong fish in the wrong size will only bring disappointed and reduce quality of life for our little aquatic critter. The picture should match what fish can go in the tank. I believe the pictures misrepresent the aquarium's capacity for fish that truly should go in it. Especially Iike the amount of 3 goldfish that was on the 35 gallon cube; three gold fish would out grow that tank, in a short time until the water quality becomes harder to maintain, which will affect the health of the aquatic life in that aquarium and short their lives span. I have seen some pictures on the packaging with a group of fish that are not even compatible. The psyche of people subliminally sees the picture on the packaging and the believes it will be ok to buy and place the fish in the picture in their aquarium. For beginner it is so misleading. These are living animals and because we are putting the in a glass or acrylic box of water, we must take more responsibility to see it doesn't happen when companies misrepresent and mislead the consumers of their products, with pictures that don't accurately should be in the aquariums. They must held accountable in reality it is false advertising and they are getting away with it. It just like using a coke on the label but instead there is something else in it that don't ever represent the coke that you were expecting.

    Some of those small tanks would be good for hatching fry. I have a 2.5 gallon that I hatch my cory eggs in and a 5 gallon also to hatch them in. My other 5 gallon tank houses nano shrimp that breed like crazy in it. My local fish store is happy to get the baby cories and shrimp from me.

      It's so hard to make money breeding fish lol. I accidentally bred cool "mutt" guppies starting with 4 in a ten gallon. By the time I got things cleaned up and gave away the guppies I had two tanks with like 200 guppies! They don't eat their young much lol.

    My first 29 gallon tank was a kit. It was on sale and when I priced the items separately, it was a good deal. I probably would not buy another kit for myself, but will always suggest them for someone who is curious about the hobby. There are so many items out there that it can become overwhelming. The kit takes some of that away for a newbie in my opinion. Great info, Joanna!

    The Petcos in the Phoenix metro area are large, well maintained, and staffed by knowledgeable people. The Petco where I live now isn't a single one of those things. If I really need something specifically from Petco, I'm going to have to order it online or go to one of the nearby college towns.

    I went to Petsmart today as they were having a good sale. I ve been thinking to try my hand at caring for some cherry shrimp.. There were two 10 gallon Aqueon tanks for sale 15 ea. Looked them over and was tempted when I noticed they both had cracks in the glass! I haven't bought a fish tank in near 15 years and the tanks they have at big box stores seem outrageously cheap and thin! A halfway decent tank nowadays is hard to find and most are over priced!

    I’ve been a graphic designer for 3 decades working on various brands packaging & I find it hilarious that all the art on tanks is SO WRONG 🤦‍♂️. I don’t understand how these brands that are supposed to “professionally know” the hobby let the designers put all the wrong fish on the incorrect size tanks?!?! It’s not just one brand that does that…they all do for some reason. 🤦‍♂️. So ridiculous! Great video. 👍

      In my personal experience, it's about space (think about living in a space the size of your standard bathroom) And being able to maintain constant, proper water parameters. I don't know if there are studies but quality of life will give you a happy fish and happy for the fish keeper too.

    • @jril3982
      @jril3982 5 місяців тому

      @tree.65 not an accurate comparison. Fish are not people. Bettas are raised in coke type bottles by many breeders. We are talking about a fish that has been bred to a point that their fins are so big that they need a place to rest from swimming.
