- Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development is considered a comprehensive theory about the nature and evolution of human intelligence. Jean Piaget believed that the childhood stage played a vital and active role in a person's development. Originally known as the developmental stage theory, Piaget's idea deals with the nature of knowledge itself and how humans gradually acquire, construct, and use it. Piaget claimed that cognitive development takes place within the human being and that language depends on knowledge, and understanding is acquired through cognitive development. Piaget's early work received significant attention. Many parents were encouraged to provide a supportive and enriching environment for their naturally curious children to grow and learn. Child-centered classrooms and "open education" are direct applications of Piaget's perspectives. Here is a brief description of Piaget's views on the nature of intelligence, followed by descriptions of the stages it goes through during its development.
